He is.
When I went to see him last year in D.C and he headlined with Mary J the venue (which is typically for big name acts) was sold out. I didnt see any empty seats
This past saturday at the Merriweather it was the most people they had in years and all those people were not there JUST to see Erykah (who does the show almost every year) lol
All the shows he has done in Europe and in the States have either sold out or close to selling out [Edited 8/8/13 7:20am]

I saw his show last year and it was packed, with lines outside. His show was excellent! He put that root, voodoo on the audience

perhaps his health is just suffering from the recent shows, it doesn't have to be drug or alcohol related. the man has been out of the spotlight for a decade and went through some serious problems which take their toll on a body. it was cool to see him back in the spotlight and seemingly doing well again, but all that activity, coupled (probably) with excitement/anxiety over the album he is about to release might have just been too much all at once. he's been doing shows in a lot of places this year and i'm sure he isn't used to being out there so much and spent lots of time just by himself this past decade without pressures of schedules or recuperation time after peformances/travel, or being around so many people and having to cary a show etc. that shit would quickly make anyone exhausted again. i wish he'd just made a video, released a single, let the media pick it up and do his hyping for him. then appear on a few tv shows to promote the album. than slowly ease into some form of touring. he chose to do it the 'hard' way and go on tour, letting the people know through that medium that he's back and that he's doing well. it speaks for him that he didn't just go the easy way and went out there to see people's reactions face to face. but right now perhaps he just needs some resting and let the new music speak for itself.

I second this wholeheartedly. It has been a major change to his recent life to be back on the road and it must be quite exhaustive. And the pressure building up as the release date is coming close must feel massive. He has carried this 'baby' over a decade always adding to or remixing so I guess it must be difficult to feel that it is finally ready for release.
But those who wait for something good can always wait a little longer, give the brother a little breathing space. Best wishes and get well, D.

Considering the lack of official info, I guess we can only presume it relates to previous issues. Poor guy, hope everything works out.

Found this on twitter: "I spoke w/D'Angelo today. He's out of the hospital, feeling better and excited about finishing his record." "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

He´ll be alright. So far he´s always managed to get himself up again, whether for the string of European concerts last year or getting in shape for that GQ interview. At this point I no longer care how long it takes for him to release another album as long as he´s ok and as long as the music is interesting. He is, in my opinion, the last truly interesting American soul and funk musician out there who comes up with interesting music. I still dig Prince and his live shows but I am really looking forward to new music from D´Angelo. I hope Questlove and Alan Leeds can support him a bit to get his stuff together, and I hope his health problems, whether drug related or not, will be under control. This being said, I don´t quite understand why he and some of his fans made a big deal of his physique in the first place. He shouldn´t have seen it as a burden, and THEY shouldn´t have taken it for granted. It is very difficult to get into that shape and much more difficult to maintain it. Those who expect him to look like a chiseled competitive bodybuilder 24/7 should get a reality check.
Dude is still one of the most talented, most soulful musicians out there. We should be glad he´s still around. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Yeah, that is something that puzzled me too. Just don't ever take your shirt off when playing live, so no-one will expect it either.
He could have just made a little joke about it in concert, something like "If you want to see me with my shirt off: go home and watch the Untitled video. Tonight is all about a celebration of live music!" RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Wow, Chic is back or still 2gether ?? Wouldn't mind seeing them. As far as D'Angelo, my goodness, he fell off of the stage before even performing ? He is very talented, & I hope he is taking his gift seriously. I know some of his fam members... I'll just say that maybe some in his family have also had substance problems, & may not have been the best role models for him. But then again, still others in his family are very spiritual & on the straight path. I hope he gets it together. [Edited 8/19/13 16:50pm]

Sigh, i wanted to go to that Mary/ D'Angelo show.. Bet it was good.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
, exactly. I do not expect him to be a chiseled size 10 male model or whatever is skinny in a males size), but I really wouldn't want him to have a lot of skin hanging over his pants either. Not at his age.

Praying for D'Angelo to overcome whatever it is that is ailing him, (body, mind, or both). Please get healthy first.
