Why 1999 was the greatest year for music? 1. Backstreet Boys became the world's biggest act in music with Millenium.

Where's the blues, opera, zydeco, Hawaiian, jazz, rockabilly, southern soul, Bollywood, bluegrass, folk, easy listening, death metal, ranchera, mariachi, stoner rock, polka, etc? You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Surely these are all reasons 1999 sucked arse?
And I'm guessing this is all from an American slant, 'cos you missed out the huge explosion in house/trance dance music in Europe during the year...ATB, Chicane, System F, Mauro Picotto, etc www.filmsfilmsfilms.co.uk - The internet's best movie site!

Well, obviously, the true musical highlight of 1999 was Prince's release of 1999 -The New Master

By the "evidence" presented, I'm guessing the author of this thread is around 16 years old. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

And gay. (Cher, Celine Dion and Ricky Martin? Really?) We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Actually, I think it was a fairly good year. but of all the above I can only agree with Santana, Eminem and Red Hot Chili Peppers

If every genre was mainstream popular, well then I wanna know what the polka hits were. Oh well, different strokes for different folks. All of the event bought up here make 1999 the worst pop music year for me. Mind you, the shit in the charts did motivate me to reach back into the past to find the good stuff. Ain't never looked back. It's been too long since you've had your ass kicked properly:

Well of course they played barbershop!! That's why that Ice Cube movie went into production--he wanted some of that! Obviously, it took a different direction before it got to theaters, but it was originally about Cube trying to get together a quartet. Hijinks would ensue when they mistakenly entered the Sweet Adelines International competition, and had to perform in drag.
On a serious note, I appreciate the way you help to broaden the musical landscape around here. I rarely make comments on your threads (because my limited familiarity with many genres), but I like getting the little tastes that you provide of what's out there.

Backstreet Boys becoming number 1 is the number one reason why 1999 is best?
My word.

Most of these support the arguement as to why 1999 was the WORST year for music for that decade (especially #16). "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

Cher didn't continue to dominate the charts. She had Believe it 98 and that was it. Of course being 53 and being Cher in the first place that's understandable. Mambo #5 is amazing.

it wasn't a bad year per se. The OP actually used terrible examples to make a feasible point.

It was musically a fun year but the teen pop not going away was annoying! Behind the music called 1999 pop musics best year ever, that's where it came from

I remember 1999 as the year that Santana made a huge comeback with Supernatural
Lauryn Hill was also riding high.
but the best thing about this year, for me, was becoming a huge fan of Jamiroquai.I was in a record store and I heard this amazing music being played....it was very retro-sounding,disco-inspired and very funky! I asked the clerk who it was and she handed me the Synkronized CD,which had just been released.I've been a diehard fan ever since

You took the words out of my mouth. The OP must be joking. And it's obviously an American joke: does he/she mention any European artists? I don't think so.
Sadly, 1999 was quite a sad year for music, since the most exciting movements of the decade (which were European: Britpop and trip hop) were dead by that year.

The USA and UK are not the world. There's Africa, Mexico, Brazil, China, Japan, Cuba, Spain, Canada, India, Russia, and many other places in the world that has music. Of course, you're totally right. I just see a trend to only consider US artists, and I try to contribute to the debate with European music, which I know well. There's certainly very interesting music in all the places you mention, but I only have a superficial knowledge of it.
