That ended that. Why is that? I mean, 3 hours is a lot, but you never wanna see him again?

That ended that. Why is that? I mean, 3 hours is a lot, but you never wanna see him again? It was overkill, seriously. It just filled me for a while is all...nothing is ever permanent, I think.

Hey - don't apologise. We've no search engine and it was no problem. It was just easier for me to find because I'd seen them and I had a record because I'd posted there.

Even Prince was talking about him wearing us out. I remember about 4.30am slumped at the side where they had put some seats wondering if I should just crawl into a corner and try to sleep ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift. |

thanks for the post Yomamma...
and to all you wuzz's we in New York have enjoyed Maceo playing 3 hour shows in New York at New Years for several years. Ok at the Celebration you were all there to see Prince, (but I don't think Maceo played that long last year)... Okay I understand you were waiting for Prince to play... but get a life there are more musicians than Prince, and every show of Maceo's I have seen is fine musicianship and the greatest grooves and to me he is the bastion of funky music these days. I find it discouraging that anyone Prince brings "on board" becomes critisized after a while on the org. Maceo is a living legend, not an icon like Prince, but the bones of every great moment in funk history including a collaboration with Prince (albeit after the peak of Prince's fame...) but he was there in the days when James Brown was a force to be reckoned with instead of a sad Vegas act, and he was there when George landed the Mothership, and he continues to give us great music, not some oldies style has been thing like his former boss. I know I'm, probably ranting about a small comment, but I love waving the Maceo flag, and I get worried we dismiss a huge chunk of our musical heritage when we stop honoring people like Maceo Parker. If it comes to it, I don't always love those neverending aftershows, so I suppose I see your point in a way... but have to say don't diss the greatest sax player alive today... or check out Maceo in another setting to that all night thing at Paisley...

Rebeka - with all due respect - you weren't there and you are taking comments out of context. I'm sure no-one is really disputing Maceo's musical ability, or dissing him. The night in question was truly exhausting, and the majority of people had likely arrived at Paisley the day before, some having travelled thousands of miles and been up for 24 hours to enjoy the previous days activities and performances.

During the evening in question, after experiencing The Fonky Baldheads, people enjoyed The Time with cameo appearances from both George Clinton and Prince. My guess is that Maceo hit the stage at about 2am at the earliest. People were not waiting for Prince to perform - they stayed to watch and listen to Maceo. As it happens, Prince performed once with him. Maceo and his band were tight, However, everyone was plain frazzled. As I said, even Prince was walking around the room looking at his watch, and joked later in the week about Maceo taking it to the limit - and more. It was an unforgettable and exhausting night. I'm sure that not everybody who attended would attend his solo concerts, but I'm sure many will. And everyone I spoke to before and after was more than aware of and appreciated Maceo's massive contribution to musical history, many having listened to him over the years. Some of us just wished he'd have closed his set 30 minutes before because on that particular night we were spent. During his appearances that I witnessed on the last Prince tour, many people continued to pay respect to him and continue to value the fact that Prince invites him to perform. . ooh, London... that's great, from the tour dates at Maceo's site it looks like we don't get to have him back in the US for a long time! If you hear the new album give us all some info.. we won't be getting it mainstream in the US for a while it seems...
(should have known an English person would write so well!!)

This post confused me til I saw that it's origins are rather old... so to continue the update: Maceo just played London at end of February... (a great review was posted on the Other Artists forum) and although 3 hours maybe long LaVish if it's the wee small hours of the morning, Maceo played 3 hours in a formal sitdown venue in London and had the place rocking... and it was as close to a "perfect show as ever I've experienced and up there with One Nite ALone at the Apollo in terms of energy and artistry...(Morris Hayes has joined Maceo's band and to me takes this show to a new level)
The album (now I've had a chance to listen to it..) is as strong as anything Maceo has ever done, it's a solid consistant piece of album, each track stands on it's own and the more I listen the more I am finding in each track, horn arrangements (greg Boyer) are exciting and punchy and Maceo blows like we haven't heard him on disc for a while... in fact I would rate this album up there with Life On Planet Groove, as a studio recording this comes as close as anything to a live vibe...oooh plus great packaging, a nice design and a little hidden peace sign on the actual cd, which is apt for the times...
