DAMN! Toni Braxton loses 27 of her songs in bankruptcy case

Toni Braxton may still have a song in her heart after filing for bankruptcy, but she just lost more than 2 dozen tunes that made her famous -- because some dude bought them right out from under her ... TMZ has learned.

TMZ broke the story ... Braxton struck a deal in her bankruptcy case, in which she settled with her various debtors. Part of the deal -- Toni could buy back 27 songs from her music catalog for $20K -- with one BIG string attached ... she could be outbid.

Enter a guy named Ross M. Klein, who doubled Toni's price and nabbed the tunes.

Among the 27 are a few hits, including "You're Making Me High," "How Many Ways," and "Always."

"Un-Break My Heart" is not among the 27, and we don't know its fate ... although it looks like it's still hers.

Sometimes, it's hard to carry a tune in bankruptcy.

^^In general, songs are worth more if they get remade a lot or if a recording gets used often in commercials, TV, movies, compilations, sampled in other songs, etc. Toni Braxton album songs are probably not used much, if at all.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Wait, so Toni knew this and still only came in with $20K?

Maybe she didn't think anyone was going to buy the songs. It's like Paul McCartney asked Yoko Ono to put up some of the money for ATV, although he had enough money himself. Paul is known to be sort of a miser. Yoko wasn't interested, so Michael Jackson bought it.

This is true. This guy may try to get the songs in movies and T.V. shows and find no interest. I hope that is what happens.

Identity

Maybe she signed away her royalties from those 27 songs during her bankrupty proceedings?

How could she possibly "buy back" song copyrights of which she doesn't own 100 percent? See next post. I think the media (TMZ) intentionally misworded the specifics of the auction.

Here's an example of one of the compositions she does not own outright:

"You're Makin' Me High"

Copyright claimant: Sony/ATV, ECAF Music, Almo Music Corporation, Groove 78 Music, Lady Ashlee Music, Jay Bird Alley Music

Authorship on application: Kenneth (Babyface) Edmonds, Bryce Wilson, Toni Braxton

Registration number/date: PA0000972075 / 1999-10-26

Source: U.S. Copyright Office

Either way, I think most people staying tuned to Toni's drama have lost their genuine sympathy for her plight.

Exactly. She probably owned 25%-33% of the songwriting/publishing. Not a whole lot when your songs aren't selling much, played on the radio or used by other artists. Isn't this the 2nd or 3rd bankruptcy she's been through? Sounds like she needs to get money counceling.

Money counseling, indeed! This woman is always in bankruptcy court. She clearly needs to take a money management course. She can never seem to hold on to her money.
