It really depends on what you personally are interested in...

I like many diehards of varius artists tend to get interested in "era's" often..

ie: Prince Pre Warner Bros - Pre Purple rain- Pre Parade- ect...

So my personal faves at the moment wont necessarily be yours...

I'm going to org note you.. wink

Quite a lot of stuff has come out officially in the last few years. You can probably stick to official releases or the limited ones on Dagger Records for the most part, there's an awful lot out there. Of the ones I have heard I recommend:

- People Hell & Angels - new set of studio outtakes post-Experience that fits together like a real album

- West Coast Seattle Boy box set - 4 discs plus DVD. Disc 1 is session stuff from the Chitlin Circuit days with Isleys, Little Richard and more. The rest is a combination of studio outtakes & prev unreleased live stuff. Some of the material is essential and some is just interesting/ minor variations on things you have heard before. But it's got a lot of good stuff in it & priced reasonably. And the DVD documentary, narrated by Bootsy Collins, is very good.

- Live At Winterland box set from 1968, 4 discs of amazing soundboards, some of it is the best live Hendrix I've ever heard.

Here are reviews of the three I did when they came out:

I didn't love the recent re-releases of Hendrix In The West (live) and South Saturn Delta (studio outtakes) that much, I think those would be for completist collectors. People Hell & Angels and First Rays Of The New Rising Sun are the most essential studio collections of his later recordings.

Maybe a more studious Hendrix fan can point out what are the "truly essential" recordings that are still only out on bootlegs. I used to have a tape from a vinyl LP that was said to be "Hendrix & John McLaughlin at the Record Plant 1969" which I lost, and I've never found it again. I recall it was 4 long instrumentals, similar to Jam Back At The House, and there were two guitarists, one of which was definitely Jimi. But maybe it was later found not to be McLaughlin playing the second guitar and it's not called that anymore. Anyway I wish I still had that tape, it's one thing I lost & have never recovered. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

I always thought that this version of "Power of Soul" (from "Paper Airplanes") had more of a 'Pre-Funkadelic' feel, especially with Juma Sultan's Percussion, Buddy's Drums, and Jimi's rhythm playing...

...

Jimi Hendrix -"With The Power...."

Is the genius of jimi hendrix lp very rare because I used to have that lp but had to return it because there was a glitch in the record. I remember that I liked its gonna take a lot, sweet thang, groovemaker (the track that had the small glitch chipped off).
