The period when The Jacksons left Motown was a wonderful time. And I think off their debut album, this song was the one that showed it the most. Michael's vocals on this track are amazing, you can feel how free he is on this song compared to the way Motown restrained him. Definitely one of my favorites of the period.

It was a a smart move for them to work with Gamble and Huff.At that point, the Philly sound was the hottest sound in R&B.

I'm not sure
their next albums Destiny and Triumph were much stronger.
In addition, Goin 'Places - again Gamble & Huff, and this album is unremarkable.

Looking back though, I still think it was a good move. Who better to work with? Epic wouldn't have taken a chance to let the Jacksons produce all on their own, and I'm sure that working with Gamble and Huff only increased their musical vocabulary in learning how to write and produce music. I also doubt that many producers at the time would've let them write a few songs on the albums such as Blues Away, Style Of Life, Different Kind Of Lady, and Do What You Wanna were all surely important songs in the development of The Jacksons from becoming performers to songwriters and producers as well. And although The Jacksons and Goin' Places aren't particularly strong albums, I can't imagine The Jacksons producing much better albums with the little experience they had at the time.

I still think it was a good move lol after the Motown years, the Jacksons needed a strong hit and they needed a sound that was "in".The last few Motown albums didn't do very well."Enjoy Yourself" was massive and "Show You The Way To Go" was a perfect follow-up.Michael has said that working with Gamble and Huff gave him alot of experience and he was able to learn alot, just from watching them.

I agree that 'Destiny' is excellent, but I'm one of the few fans who thinks that 'Triumph' is sorta overrated.

probably all happened as it should have been. I'm just not impressed with this collaboration. could be much better.
Although the debut album was not bad, I think it refers primarily to their second album.

overrated? peak position - № 10 in the U.S. for the album, and for singles - #12, #77, #22, #73.
Only 1 platinum in the U.S., and this is 1 year after 7 platinum for Off the wall.
No, I think both Destiny and Triumph are underrated.

In the US, The Jacksons (not J5) as a group never really got the same attention as Michael solo. They were considered an R&B group and like most R&B groups/singers of the time, didn't get Top 40 pop airplay. They mainly got R&B radio play, except for maybe 3 or 4 singles that became big pop hits. Even with Victory, the local pop stations only played State Of Shock. The other singles got lots of R&B airplay though. The R&B station even played non-singles like The Hurt. They played The Hurt just as much as Body. Even today, The Jacksons are not given attention by the label or public. Earlier this year, as far as I know, was the first time the group had an official video release of anything with The Jackson 5 cartoon series on DVD. Even Jermaine had a videocassette/laserdisc in the 1980's called Dynamite Videos.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

LOL yeah I just spend WAY too much time reading and learning on my own lol. Thanks! biggrin

And I kind of agree, when you listen to the other Jacksons albums or Gamble and Huff's other work, you can tell this work wasn't the strongest. I guess what I wish for was stronger material during this collaboration, as I know it could've been better with all that talent!

I may ruffle a few feathers by saying this lol but in my opinion...

The 1976 album The Jacksons and Destiny are the only essential Jackson albums....the albums that every fan MUST own.If you only had two Jacksons albums in your collection, these are the two that you should have.

Look how many times we have a thread devoted to "Show You The Way To Go" lol that song is a CLASSIC!! Gamble and Huff's dreamy production mixed with Michael's soaring vocal....how can you not like that?! The entire album is strong from beginning to end."Enjoy Yourself" is one of their best dance tunes. The MJ-written "Blues Away" was a sign of things to come.

Give it another listen,folks lol

Triumph (5) vs. The Jacksons (4)

Can you Feel It < Enjoy Yourself ---I like Can you Feel It but I think its kinda overrated and its not better than Enjoy Yourself which is one of their best songs from their catalogue

Lovely One > Think Happy-- I really love this song but its not better than Lovely One that really needs no explanation.

Your Ways > Good Times---- Love "Your Ways" and Good Times is one of the weaker songs on The Jacksons

Everybody > Keep On Dancing- another favorite song on the album but it doesnt touch "Everybody" which is one of the best songs the Jacksons have ever done.

This Place Hotel > Living Together---- This Place Hotel is one of their best songs and one of the best songs Michael has ever written. Plus, its just more superior to Living Together

Time Waits For No One > Dreamer---- I really love Dreamer but Time Waits For No One is much better in my opinion and one of their most underrated songs.

Walk Right Now < Blues Away---- Walk Right Now is a great song that I love but Bluesss Away is better and is one of my all time favorites.

Give It Up < Show You The Way To Go- another hard one but Im going with the latter on this but I still reallllllllly love Give It Up. Give It Up is underrated and especially Michaels vocals on it but Show You The Way To Go has a uniqueness about it and the production is flawless along with Michaels vocals. Its also one of their best songs.

Wondering Who < Style of Life-- Wondering Who might have been better if Michael was singing lead because the production is nice. I love Style of Life and MJs soulful vocals.

Strength of One Man from the "The Jacksons" is hit and miss for me. I do like the chorus though but one of the albums weaker songs.

I think the " The Jacksons" album is underrated in comparision to the fan love and radio spins Triumph receives. However, I dont think its better than Triumph. With that being said, I love both albums. lol

I love this live version.

"Show You the Way to Go" is my all-time favorite song with MJ on vocals. That man recorded a string of utterly fantastic songs, but I don't like any of them as much as this one. music
