Andre Benjamin's Jimi Hendrix Film Will World Premiere At Toronto International Film Festival

Andre Benjamin's Jimi Hendrix Film Will World Premiere At Toronto International Film Festival

All Is By My Side, another high-profile film based on the life of a real-life person that we've been following, that's been burdened with controversy since it started production, will also make its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

This is the Andre Benjamin Jimi Hendrix project that didn't have the approval of Jimi Hendrix's estate to use any of the musician's original songs, with reps for the estate accusing the filmmakers of moving forward with the project without their official permission.

That didn't stop the production of the film, however, which was shot last summer in Ireland.

The film will be free of all Hendrix-written classics like Purple Haze or The Wind Cries Mary, because of rights issues, and the producers actually set the film in "Hendrix's pre-fame era," as they said, and the music used will be covers of other musicians' songs Hendrix performed.

It was reported by http://www.rollingstone.c...c-20120703" href="http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/andre-3000-covers-beatles-muddy-waters-songs-for-jimi-hendrix-biopic-20120703">Rolling Stone magazine last year that producers were planning to take the film to the Sundance Film Festival in 2013. Obviously that didn't happen. Unless it was submitted, and rejected.

I thought it might debut at Cannes, especially since it skipped Berlin, Rotterdam, SXSW, and Tribeca. But that obviously didn't happen either.

The feature film is written and directed by John Ridley.

Now we wait for that first trailer...

I can't understand why Jimi's estate is so against a biopic confuse He was a legendary artist with a compelling story that needs to be told. There's a whole new generation of Hendrix fans who are curious about his life and music.

There's many books about Hendrix if they're that interested, which are more detailed than a movie would be. Biopics are not always that accurate anyway, or a book for that matter. Dennis Edwards said that he didn't get mad about the date mentioned in Papa Was A Rolling Stone (according to the movie), but because Norman Whitfield had them do almost 30 takes of the song. The part about David Ruffin getting dragged away from a concert after being fired didn't happen either. David did appear at some of their shows, though.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Exactly! Besides the people closet to Jimi Hendrix (his family) has every right to be critical of any movie that involves their loved one, especially if it involves a depiction of Jimi's life that is not accurate or doesn't show him in bad light.

If they (his family/estate) are so concerned about the movie being "accurate",they can easily insist that they have alot of input into the film. They can demand to see the script, approve it,make changes, etc.Instead, his fans have to settle for a half-assed biopic that doesn't even feature Jimi's original music! It's a shame that money and other issues get in the way of Jimi's story being told properly.

I think it's a damn shame about the music, also. I will still see it though. lol

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

What's the point of a Hendrix movie that is based on him before he was a star? Mainly because the idiotic estate did not want them to use any Jimi music.

They probably don't want the movie to mention Jimi was a big time dope head, which he was. Jus the facts, maam.

All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

They don't get along though. At least not Leon, his brother and Janie, the adopted sister who is in charge of Jimi's estate. People can make a movie about anything, even one based on rumors like the film about John Lennon & Brian Epstein.
