80's Songs about East Asia I heard Turning Japanese on the radio the other day and got to thinking about how several 80's hits were about (or referenced throughout) east Asia. I thought I'd make another playlist thread.
One Night In Bangkok - Murray Head
Big In Japan - Alphaville
Turning Japanese - The Vapors
China Girl - David Bowie
Cambodia - Kim Wilde
Anybody have any others?

TECHNICALLY turning japanese isn't about Japan at all. It's about jerking off.

T'Pau's other hit was "Hole in my heart" with the lyric "Theres a hole in my heart, that goes all the way to China".
Most of these songs treated Asia in a very superficial way and had very little insight into the region. Was there not also a group called Asia and another one called Wang Chung who mostly sang dance pop with keytars.
Did any of these groups actually have any Asian members in them?
Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Asia was more of an arena rock sort of supergroup. There was a trend during that era of groups named after places like Boston, Kansas, Chicago, New York City Band, Ohio Players, Hiroshima, Alabama, Orleans, Oak Ridge Boys, etc. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Yeah several of these songs are kinda offensive, especially One Night In Bangkok. I love though that several of them include melodic elements from East Asian music.
