Haven't bothered with her since the Mimi album. Glitter was a good album save a few tracks. I really never checked Charmbracelet. Don't laugh at my funk

Clive didn't want to do anything with Lisa's career. Clive choose to push Lisa mostly at R&B radio. Lisa has 3 Number 1 Billboard R&B songs, zero on the Pop side. Despite minimal promotion at Pop radio, all 3 of her U.S. album releases were either certified Gold or Platinum. So, yes the potential was there for her to be really big here in the U.S., but Clive wouldn't hear of it. The most he ever did for her was allowing her to drop one song on "The Bodyguard" soundtrack. Other than that, he showed very little interest in her. He wasn't going to push Lisa at Pop radio because that would have taken away airtime from Nippy. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! Arista pushed Ace Of Base, TLC, and Toni Braxton, who all had pop success during that time. Isn't Toni's songs more like Whitney than Lisa's is? Lisa's music had more of a 1970's vibe like Jamiroquai and Brand New Heavies, who also didn't get the same kind of airplay. That may have something to do with it. Arista wanted Phyllis Hyman to do pop records and she had a big problem with it, and it probably added to her personal problems. Whitney didn't rebel like Phyllis, she just recorded whatever Clive got for her. They also took Expose, who was originally a Latin freestyle dance group and changed their sound to more AC pop. Not everyone wants to do pop records. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton | |
