I didn't look at the list, but unless they've listened to every single album made since 1948's Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra LP (including non-music like speeches, sermons, sound effects, & comedy), I'm not sure how they determined whatever is on it.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Actually, not bad.
All these albums, with the exception of Kanye West, would be in my top 100.
Revolver is also my number 1. cool

Man, Revolver really has taken up the mantle as most overrated album of all time. The Beatles released better albums immediately before and after that one IMO.

And I won't even spare another thought for a list that claims Kanye West recorded an album that surpassed anything from, say, Stevie Wonder.

They were obviously trying to be contemporary adding Kanye to the list. I'm not saying the album is bad, in fact it's quite good, but it only came out like what, 2 years ago? It's much too soon to know if it's a classic or not.

.

No - it's missing What's Goin' On and OK Computer, for starters. And as a Beatle/Wonder fan,

I agree with Alex.

er

Similar to Rolling Stone's top 10. Four albums appear on both lists. EW's is more contemporary:

http://www.rollingstone.c...r-20120524

1. Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

2. Pet Sounds

3. Revolver

4. Highway 61 Revisited

5. Rubber Soul

6. What's Going On

7. Exile On Main Street

8. London Calling** (1980 - newest album on the list!)

9. Blonde On Blonde

10. The Beatles (The White Album)

Interesting! I always thought Sgt Pepper was the Beatles' most overrated album (at the expense of Revolver). While I appreciate it's cultural impact and historical significance, on pure musical grounds I wouldn't rank it in the top half of Beatle albums.

Revolver is actually my favourite on musical grounds. So I guess we differ there.

I also don't think it's a bad list. Though I really like the Kanye West one and also haven't really given Pet Sounds a chance.

I find Revolver to be a collection of mostly great songs that's somewhat less than the sum of its parts (from a Beatles POV). I'm not particularly fond of "Doctor Robert" and I think "Yellow Submarine" would preclude any album from being considered the best ever. OTOH, both Rubber Soul and SPLHCB manage to collect great songs that turn into something even more transcendent when bundled together.

You should definitely spend some time with Pet Sounds because it's fantastic.

This list is much more accurate IMO. If I was going to choose a Prince album it would be SOTT over PR anyday. I would also remove Highway 61 Revisited from this list and replace it with Blood on the Tracks. Just sayin cool

Unholyalliance

The 4 albums by black artists you will almost always see on every American 'Best of Albums Ever List":

1. Marvin Gaye - What's Going On

2. Michael Jackson - Thriller

3. Prince - Purple Rain

4. Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Pre-Beatles don't exist. lol Neither does country, showtunes, jazz, southern rock, funk, blues, easy listening, salsa, etc. Lawrence Welk wasn't on TV for almost 30 years for nothing. Also, the US & UK isn't the only places in the world that releases albums. That's why I didn't look at the list, I could pretty much guess most of what was going to be included. smile

Not a bad list IMO, u'll never appease everyone with such lists. i'd trade Stevie's SITKOL for the Beach Boys. huge feat for Kanye to make such a list, i'm not a fan, but i like how he pushes himself and pursues sonic greatness even though his asshole-ness will cloud many ppl from seeing it. don't own anything by the Stones or the Beatles so can't argue their placement (I hear they're like really good legends and stuff...LOL) but it's to be expected.

I agree...for the longest time I though Sgt Pepper got all the press and Revolver was always the true brilliance Sgt Pepper mistakenly received (altho love Pepper too).

I like the list...but these things are sooo ridiculous. I lke Alex ref to Kanye having a better album than Stevie? I mean really? They are just trying to keep the kiddies happy. Let's revist in 30 years and see if anything Kanye did is still relevant...cause I am pretty sure Innervisions, Talking Book, and Songs in the Key of Life will be.

I agree with Lili92. Every "best ever" list should only have one album per artist in it. And it's true, yes, you always see the same names pop up again and again.

The list lost it's credibility by having Kanye West's MBDTF. FOH with that bs.

I wish these lists would stop using "All Time." It should be "rock albums of all time" at least, "rock" in the generic "rock and roll" context.

Heck, it's as if Miles and Trane never existed. Everyone knows these are silly lists, but I guess they help pass the time.

Well that would include soft rock, thrash, psychedelic, bubblegum rock, punk rock, blues rock, jazz rock, heavy metal, progressive rock, riot grrrl, southern rock, funk rock, rockabilly, country rock, Mexican rock, Afro-rock, goth, stoner rock, arena rock, ect. So they still can't make a list if they didn't listen to all albums in the genre in all countries. lol
