Review of the Columbus, OH show (July 10) Concert review | Bruno Mars: Multitalented singer holds audience raptBy Kevin Joy
The only things Bruno Mars didn’t do last night were serve up concession-stand nachos and direct traffic on Lane Avenue after the concert. The performer had just about every other detail covered. His pipes were strong and soulful. He handled several decent stints on guitar and drums. He needed only basic small talk to elicit screams more apt for a Justin Bieber show. Gold chains, fedora and leopard-print garb? Check. The petite 27-year-old held a capacity Value City Arena crowd in his palm throughout a 90-minute show that sliced, diced and threw heaps of old-school flavor on his already-throwback radio tunes. A ginormous disco ball spun during the funky Treasure, with Instagram-hued live video of Mars projected on giant screens — the collective result making it tough to determine whether it was 2013 or 1973. Slacker anthem Billionaire was paired with the classic Money (That’s What I Want). Knowing the whims of a diverse house, he snuck in song snippets by Soul for Real, Ghost Town DJ’s and Ginuwine, whose randy jam Pony Mars once sang at a talent show in high school. A slowed-down groove and gyrations to match shaded the reggae-lite Our First Time. Lest moralists object, the upbeat Marry You quickly followed, with the room singing as one about the pursuit of matrimony. The star also offered a few tips for singles. For one thing, it helps to be a musician. “I’m the dude on the ticket,” said a sweaty, smiling Mars — who, as he must declare on each stop of the 87-date Moonshine Jungle tour — pitched woo to an unsuspecting audience member. His silver bullet, employed thrice: Cut the music mid-song, tip one’s hat and offer a breathy, bedroom-eyed damn. But Mars didn’t handle all of the heavy lifting. Joined by a backup vocalist plus a seven-piece band known as the Hooligans, Mars and the good-natured, Goodwill-chic ensemble often stepped — and snapped — together as one. It allowed Mars to share in the moment, it didn’t feel rehearsed and it was impossible not to smile watching the goofball bunch play off each other’s quirks. Mars, a young Elvis impersonator during his Hawaii childhood, offered shades (and shakes) reminiscent of the King. He also channeled Michael Jackson and James Brown — the latter during a fiery, revival-style take onRunaway Baby. The brass also added muscle to encore closer Locked Out of Heaven, which has been rightly compared to something the Police might once have recorded. And while the show offered the perfunctory pyrotechnics and strobe lights, it did without the flying harnesses, catwalks and sprints along the floor aisles that seem almost mandatory for modern pop stars. No matter. Mars didn’t need them. The appeal of pseudo-simplicity was best defined during a quiet moment, when the singer growled through the ballad When I Was Your Man — a cutting ballad about regret that he said remains the hardest song to perform. It’s powerful on the radio. In concert, bolstered by extra vocal reach and stronger piano chords, it gave goose bumps. To that, there’s only one response: damn.

I know I'm late in posting my review, yesterday spent most of the day recovering from the amazing concert lol! BUT HERE'S MY REVIEW! ********************************************************************************* Finally. After weeks of watching performances from the Moonshine Jungle tour on Youtube, I finally got to see Bruno Mars and his band perform live and in person on July 11. Let me say, there is no comparing watching the performances on Youtube and seeing it live in person. Absolutely no comparison. The show lives up to all the hype and then some and Bruno is even more electrifying and amazing live in person. And although I pretty much knew how the show would go from watching the performances on Youtube, it didn’t spoil the concert for me—it was just as fresh and exciting as watching the whole show for the first time. I really don’t know more I can say that’s already been said in other reviews posted here of the show. Bottom line, Bruno and the band put on an amazing and incredible show. The showmanship that he and the band displayed is top-notch, and there isnt anybody out there right now doing what they do. As other reviews have stated, there are a mixture of ages, from the very young to the very old, and it was no different at the show here in Michigan. I saw young kids, tweens, teens, young adults, middle-agers and elderly folks. And from the sounds that I heard in the arena, EVERYONE had the time of their lives at the show! Even my 60 year old dad, who I dragged along and who isn’t a fan, really enjoyed himself and had to agree that Bruno and his band put on an “Excellent and amazing show” (his words). Even though he isn’t a fan of Bruno, he really likes and appreciates good music—and he thoroughly enjoyed the music that Bruno and band performed. My dad said he was very impressed with the tightness of the band, how well choreographed and on point they all were. He especially liked the drummer (Bruno’s brother Eric) and the piano player (John Fossit). Another standout performance of the night was the final song, Gorilla. Again, seeing it live is way more incredible than seeing in on Youtube. There is a certain palpable electrified energy that infiltrates the atmosphere and affects the entire arena from this performance. From the well timed explosions to Bruno’s gritty vocals and sweaty, passionate performance—he really feels this song and you can tell its his favorite song to perform and a lot of thought and planning went into making sure he closed out the night with a bang. And boy did he ever! Despite the song’s raunchy lyrics my dad really liked the Gorilla performance too-he enjoyed the explosions and pyrotechnics. All in all, the show was fantastic, incredible, excellent, super polished & professional—REAL entertainment. A REAL live show put on by a super-talented REAL live performer and band. I dare anyone to go to this show and NOT have a good time, its impossible! My legs are still sore from all the jumping, dancing and going up and down the stairs from that night lol. We had really good seats—floor seats in the 6th row. We were seated in that last two chairs in the row that extended into the aisle which was cool. Other highlights for me personally was seeing Phredley, Bruno’s guitar player walk right past me and head backstage, and Bruno’s personal assistant Ryan Keomaka (sp?) standing about a couple feet away from me snapping pictures. Speaking of pictures, unfortunately I have a pretty crappy camera phone so the pics I took do not do it any justice. I don’t have a smartphone with an amazing camera. So I apologize for the crappy quality. I’m definitely glad I got the chance to go see his concert, and I highly recommend that people go see this concert if they have a chance. As a matter of fact I would love to go again and if I had the money, I would be in Chicago right now because that is where he is playing tonight. This guy is the next Michael Jackson! He’s the next Prince! He’s so short but so powerful! He’s so dreamy! I want that trombone player!
Oh yeah, another cute moment that happened during the concert but not up on stage. When Bruno began singing Treasure, the guy sitting next to me got down on his knees and proposed to his girlfriend. He actually told me he was going to do that before the concert started and asked if I would take their picture, but he ended up having someone in the row behind us do it. It was a really sweet moment and I’m sure Bruno would’ve been delighted to know that a couple got engaged during one of his songs at his concert

A couple of other things I forgot to mention in my review, it wasnt until after the concert that I realized that he didnt perform Young Girls at this concert. A minor bummer since I like that song and I know he performed it during his earlier shows. Also, during the part when the band tries to put out their best pickup line on a woman in the audience, he only had the first guy (Doug?) and Phil do their lines, Kameron didnt do his "Girl, I would drink every last bit of your bathwater" line. It will be interesting to see what tweaks and changes the concert will undergo as the tour goes on. Bruno and the band were again dressed in their casual clothes (no suits) for the Detroit show. I wonder if he and the band will wear them again for the Chicago show or if the suits are indeed retired for good?

Reviews from the Detroit show (July 11) July 12, 2013 at 1:29 am
Mars' moves bring old-school showmanship to Palace debut
Bruno Mars made his Metro Detroit debut count Thursday night, performing a dynamite 90-minute show before a sold-out Palace of Auburn Hills. The 27-year-old showstopper and his knock-out eight piece band brought a true sense of old-school showmanship to the performance. Rather than stacking his band with performers his own age, Mars chose band members with some mileage on them, who didn’t look out of place in their ’70s-style wardrobes. But while the stage was outfitted with hundreds of lights and backed by a full HD video screen, it was Mars and his band’s stylish moves — stepping in unison, dancing in circles, clowning around with one another all over the stage — that gave the show its warm yesteryear feel. It helps that Mars is an extremely engaging, irresistible presence on stage. His pre- and post-show music contained selections by Prince, James Brown and Michael Jackson, and he showed shades of each of those legends during the show. But he’s no copycat, and he channels those influences and filters them through his own personal style, topping it off with his beaming, 1,000-watt smile. Put plainly, he’s a star, baby, and a hugely likable one at that. Mars opened the show with “Moonshine,” the song from which his tour — dubbed the Moonshine Jungle — derives its name. During second song “Natalie,” he made a plea with the crowd. “Maybe you put your camera phones down and dance with us?” he asked. A giant disco ball dropped from the ceiling during “Treasure,” Mars’ current single, and he mixed in a piece of Barrett Strong's “Money (That’s What I Want)” during “Billionaire.” He made other musical nods during the show, working in a piece of Ginuwine’s “Pony” into “Show Me” and adding in a bit of “Purple Rain” to the splendid “Marry You,” an unabashed highlight of the evening. He and his bandmates slowed the show down during “If I Knew” to serenade an audience member, but avoided the cliché of bringing her up on stage by throwing one-liners at her from the stage. They kept things clean and classy, even during risqué show closer “Gorilla,” which was accented by big bursts of pyro but otherwise wouldn't have been out of place on a '70s variety show. The evening peaked during an encore of “Locked Out of Heaven,” Mars’ most stratospheric single to date. As the song climbed, Mars and his bandmates bounced up and down on the stage and the crowd followed suit in their seats. Mars literally had the place jumpin’ — not bad for his first time in town. Prince, James Brown and Michael Jackson would be proud. Add a comment...
AUBURN HILLS — Shortly before Bruno Mars took the stage Thursday night, July 11, at The Palace, video screen emcee Napeson Hyman III advised fans to "prepare your mind" for the multiplatinum pop star. Bruno Mars sizzles for sellout Palace crowd in first Detroit visit
Bruno Mars nodded to the ’60s, saluted the ’70s, summoned the ’80s, and laid down one of the best pop shows of 2013. With buoyant charisma to go with the infectious smile, the fedora-topped Mars made the most of his first-ever Detroit date, whirling and working his elastic tenor for a sellout crowd of about 15,000 at the Palace on Thursday night. This may be his inaugural arena headlining tour, but the 27-year-old Hawaiian comes with a lifetime of performing polish, and he left it all over the stage. It’s tempting to draw the easy comparisons when it comes to his vivacious live show — James Brown and late Motown choreographer Cholly Atkins would surely approve — but Mars stamped it all with his own affable identity. If you’re a fan of pop music’s classic vintage — the kind with live instruments, super-sized melodies, rich harmonies and showmanship to spare — Thursday was your kind of night. That’s not to say this was some old-fashioned retro affair, even with the giant disco ball overhead and a visual vibe that occasionally evoked an old episode of “Solid Gold”: While there were plenty of musical gestures to the past, the show was hot, crisp and very much of the moment, with that most crucial pop trait of them all: immediacy. The 90-minute show was a good-natured affair. Mars exudes genuine star power but without the preening narcissism that seems to go hand in hand with it these days. Even when he was admonishing his audience (“Put your camera phones away and dance with us”), Mars was all charm and high spirits. His brothers-in-arms came via his eight-man band the Hooligans — horns included — with six of the guys mobile up front, vamping and dancing with Mars to make it a kind of loose-limbed ensemble show. Flanking Mars for most of the show was Lathrup Village-bred Phredley Brown, the band’s guitarist and musical director. Often sporting a guitar, Mars pulled from his two albums of earwormy songs, serving up a tight Motown cover (“Money [That’s What I Want]”), doing a medley of hit R&B ballads, and crafting his own graceful rendition of his B.o.B. duet, “Nothin’ on You.” “Treasure” got an upbeat ’80s groove, “Runaway Baby” a classic rock riff. “If I Knew” was a highlight, with its two-part harmony and slinky organ, and “Grenade” was nearly as potent as its name, amid a sublimely designed light show. “Nothin’ On You” was a showcase for Mars’ limber falsetto, and “Locked Out of Heaven” was an aptly exhilarating encore number, gold confetti and all. Throughout the night, Mars and company hit some important balances: earnest but not hokey, suggestive but not salacious, smooth but not too slick. Still, there’s room for growth. For all the spectacle, the show occasionally felt too rehearsed, tiptoeing up to the edge of explosive without quite giving in to full-on rapture. Some of the “casual” patter between songs likely rang familiar to any fan who’d already read a review or two, down to Mars’ crack about not tooting his own horn (“but beep!”). It’s OK to set a higher bar for Bruno Mars. This is a performer who’s clearly got the chops to clear it — and it’s a good shot we’ll ultimately see him do just that.

Reviews of last nights show in Chicago, IL Review: Bruno Mars makes it all look easy at United CenterBy Joshua Klein, Special to the TribunePlenty of acts struggle for street cred. At a packed United Center Saturday night, Bruno Mars angled for sweet cred. "I should have bought you flowers and held your hand," he confessed in "When I Was Your Man." "I think I wanna marry you," he declared in "Marry You." "When I see your face, there's not a thing that I would change," he sang in "Just the Way You Are," while half the crowd sang right along with him. A self-styled throwback to a more innocent era, Mars and his formidably tight band spent much of Saturday's set doing what pop stars do best: making all that hard work look effortless. And make no mistake, a lot of effort went into the show, from the deceptively simple stage to the casual shifting from genre to genre to the way his band members roamed at will only to snap impressively into choreographed formation without missing a beat. Having already been crowned by the numbers on and sales charts, the night felt a little bit like a victory celebration, a party, a return to the days when performers promised the proverbial Greatest Show On Earth. Or at least something just like it. For all his expert emulation, Mars is no Michael Jackson, James Brown or Prince. He is, however, exceedingly comfortable in his own skin, and his charisma shines like the light of so many spinning disco balls. If Bruno Mars did not exist, the music industry would want to invent him. A singer, songwriter, musician, dancer, producer, performer -- the total package -- Mars has had enough slight but often seriously catchy hits to sustain not just his career but an entire second tier of acts as well. While other acts hustle and flail, Mars merely smiles and surges ahead, the glint of his MIdas touch glittering through songs such as "Grenade," "Locked Out of Heaven" and "Billionaire." "I wanna be on the cover of Forbes magazine, smiling next to Oprah and the Queen," Mars admitted in the last song, with a wink. And at this rate, you never know.
http://www.chicagotribune...4155.story Bruno Mars delivers the hits with gustoBY JEFF ELBEL July 14, 2013 11:04AM
Updated: July 14, 2013 4:07PM Party people of all ages descended upon the United Center Saturday evening, anticipating that Bruno Mars’ sweat-soaked extravaganza would transform the arena into Chicago’s biggest dance club. They weren’t wrong. Despite having only two full-length albums under his own name, the 27-year-old Hawaiian native held a deep arsenal of hits that kept the energy high and the people in motion. The Hooligans, Mars’ cracking pop-soul band, was a throwback in the best way. With tight interplay and the ability to stop on a dime, the nine-piece group recalled the days when a smooth rhythm and blues combo was expected to play, sing and dance without missing a beat. James Brown would have been proud, even when Mars borrowed the Godfather of Soul’s lightning-quick Mashed Potato footwork during the red-hot riffing of “Runaway Baby.” The Hooligans were equally proficient at rock, hip-hop, soul and reggae. Even silky doo-wop found its way into the mix, alongside the Motown beat of “If I Knew.” Mars himself uncorked a wicked Chuck Berry guitar solo during a cover of “Money (That’s What I Want).” Song subjects ranged from the chaste romance of “Just the Way You Are” to the unrestrained libido of “Gorilla.” “Locked Out of Heaven” contained both, led by sharp guitar chords and a strong beat. At first, the song’s religious imagery suggested purity. “You could make a sinner change his ways,” sang Mars fervently, before dispensing with metaphors and making his carnal desires plain. “Maybe, just maybe, you’ll put your camera phones down and dance with us,” said Mars with a grin, before commencing “Treasure.” The joyful song was reminiscent of Jamiroquai and “Off the Wall”-era Michael Jackson. Mars led his Hooligans in mesmerizing, synchronized steps. “This was the hardest song for me to write,” said Mars, introducing “When I Was Your Man.” “To this day, it’s the hardest song for me to sing.” Lamenting a lost relationship, Mars’ tortured wail told all the things he’d do differently if only it weren’t too little, too late. Women cheered in thunderous approval. Fueled by handclaps and soulful moans, the dramatic “Natalie” found Mars plotting cold revenge against a gold-digging woman who did him wrong. Mars poured his heart into “Grenade,” listing different ways he would make the ultimate sacrifice for love. “But you won’t do the same,” he sang, marking the wicked sting of the chorus. Happier experiences with the ladies surfaced elsewhere. The roof-raising “Just the Way You Are” celebrated the entrancing qualities of Mars’ lady love. “If perfect’s what you’re looking for, then just stay the same,” he sang sweetly. The tender “Nothin’ On You” rang with every voice in the United Center, as faces sparkled under the twinkling lights of an oversized disco ball. Mars’ stylistic diversity was a tremendous asset. Borrowing the name of his current album, Mars’ “unorthodox jukebox” provided a satisfying, one-act variety show. Although cannons fired and flames roared during the big finale, most of the fireworks came directly from the players and songs themselves. http://www.suntimes.com/e...gusto.html
United Center becomes exuberant planet Mars for one night
The old adage of the entertainment "triple threat" surely applies to Bruno Mars but in even greater proportions. The Atlantic recording artist, singer/songwriter can not only belt out the catchiest dance number and poignantly deliver a ballad but he's also a spitfire dancer and plays a mean guitar and drums. Mars, with only two albums to his credit, is currently bringing his highly charged Moonshine Jungle Tour around the world and on Saturday landed his musical party at Chicago's United Center. He performed his 90-minute show to a full house. Fans in Mars' audience spanned the generations and cultures. From the sounds of the many screaming fans, Mars is also a heartthrob for the young set and a downright admirable all-around entertainer to older music fans. The singer, whose recent album "Unorthodox Jukebox" took a spot in the Top 10 on Billboard's Hot 100 when it was released, opened his show with "Moonshine" and then proceeded with the upbeat "Natalie." Mars was in top form during his Chicago concert, never wavering in vocal ability or charisma. His show clearly had a retro-feel as he told fans he's a lover of Old School tunes. He infuses his performances with sleek and polished choreography and songs that definitely sound as though they've come from a different era. When Mars takes his spot between his dancing band members and they all launch into smooth group moves, there's definitely a bit of a nod to Michael from J-Five days. But Mars' homage to pop and soul styles of yesteryear is in no way lackluster or trite. He's a performer with a fresh take on music and he's drawing fans in a big way these days. Who would have thought the tiny tot performing as "Little Elvis" in 1994's comedy film "Honeymoon in Vegas" would be commanding quite an audience two decades later. (Mars, at 4 years old, was known as the youngest Elvis impersonator). While the United Center concert saw Mars performing a number of songs from the latest album, he also delivered tunes from his debut CD "Doo-Wops & Hooligans." The first album brought Mars a number of hits while "Unorthodox Jukebox" is already turning out the chart toppers. It's likely almost all the songs from the latest album will get top radio play. Highlighted tunes from Mars' concert were the magnetic "Treasure," (his latest radio hit); "Just the Way You Are;" "Marry You;" the reggae-inspired "Show Me;" "Young Girls;" "Money (That's What I Want)" and "Billionaire." Mars also gave a touching performance of "When I Was Your Man," which he said was the hardest song for him to sing and write. His encore was the mega hit "Locked Out of Heaven" while "Gorilla" closed the show. Opening for Mars was British singer/songwriter Ellie Goulding, who, unfortunately, appeared to be struggling through technical sound problems throughout her set.
