Haute Event: Bruno Mars Performs at Tao Nightclub

Grammy Award-winner Bruno Mars headlined Saturday night at Tao Nightclub at the Venetian. Arriving after his concert earlier that evening, DJ Politik announced his entrance to the club and the crowd roared as flashes filled the air and fans turned to sneak a peek of the music superstar.

Joined by a group of friends at a VIP table on the dance floor, Mars sipped on cocktails and was seen dancing before making his way into the DJ booth. He hopped on the mic and surprised guests with an impromptu performance of smash hit “Locked Out of Heaven” then got the room dancing with “Bubble Butt.” The club went wild and fans belted lyric for lyric as Mars led the charge alongside DJ Politik. He then returned to his table where continued to enjoy himself and take in the packed club scene.

NBA star Roy Hibbert was also spotted partying at a VIP table with friends at Tao Nightclub.

The media is quick to crown a new succesor because we lost one of our greatest and Prince himself (although not slowing down yet) is getting older. Bruno Mars is THE only entertainer who has even half a pinky toe that could fill such big shoes. If you ever want a special treat attend just ONE of his concerts and you will see why he's being compared to the greatest. He's utterly amazing. He's grown considerably from his Doo-wop Hooligan days, his new style is mpre mature and attracts not just teeny-boppers, but fans ranging in their 20's -60's!!! It's that ol' school vibe that he brings that encourages his audiences everytime to put down their camera phones and just dance. It's like attending a real party like back in the day! These songs sung live take on a personality of their own AND Mars does what no other entertainer has done he leaves his fans on such a high that they actually experience "Post-Concert Depression" IT'S REAL. NOW THAT'S TALENT!

I DID see Bruno in concert, along with Janelle Monae and Mayer Hawthorne, and I felt very privileged to see these three exceptionally talented young artists... I didn't say anything negative about Bruno--I like his new album very much, how talented he is, how he displays his diversity in musical styles, and I am looking forward to hearing more from him.... All I am saying is that he doesn't do "IT" for me like Prince does on old albums and still in live concert... Not taking anything away from Bruno--a very talented artist in his own right. cool

A couple of reviews of the Las Vegas show (Aug. 3). I really like the wording in the first review-its one of the best, well written reviews published so far thumbs up!

Review: Mars finds treasure on planet R&B

He called it “R&B 101,” and he boiled it down to a single utterance voiced with syllables elongated, testing the elasticity of the word like a boulder dropped onto a trampoline.

“D-a-a-a-m-m-m-n-n!” Bruno Mars howled with the crazy-eyed zeal of a street preacher forecasting some locust showers.

According to Mars, mastering the delivery of this exclamatory burst is the true test of a soul man’s worth, even more so than his ability to sing and dance.

“I’m tellin’ ya,” the 27-year-old implored to a sold-out MGM Grand Garden on Saturday, perhaps sensing some skepticism towards this assertion. “I’ve been doing this for a decade.”

By “this,” Mars means mining R&B’s past to excavate hunks of contemporary pop gold.

And he’s been doing it much longer than a decade, touring as an Elvis impersonator before he was in kindergarten.

“I made my first album because I have a place in my heart for old school music,” Mars announced prior to “If I Knew,” a song that began with gospel-like yearning and ended with Mars’ voice going up and down, up and down, like an overworked elevator.

Flanked by an eight-piece band, Mars seemed intent on giving the adoring crowd something of a musical history lesson, a Cliff Notes version, at least, surveying ’70s funk lite via the carbonated, Jackson Five-worthy “Treasure,” Bob Marley-indebted reggae on “Show Me,” growling, pompadour powered ’50s rock and roll during a cover of Barrett Strong’s “Money (That’s What I Want)” and the more slickly produced, sexually ribald R&B of his teen years for a stripped down, heavy breathing, window fogging take on Ginuwine’s “Pony.”

Mars, who initially made a name for himself as a songwriter, sampled some of the more modern-sounding hits he penned for other artists, performing Travie McCoy’s “Billionaire” and B.o.B.’s “Nothin’ On You,” but in both cases, the songs’ radio-friendly sheen was deliberately scuffed up and hardened by maximalist drumming and assertive bass lines that registered in the gut like indigestion.

Smiling as if he was auditioning for a part in a toothpaste commercial, Mars served as a switch-hitting bandleader, ripping guitar leads from his knees like Marty McFly in “Back to the Future” and bashing out a feverish drum solo prior to an exultant “Locked Out of Heaven.”

Mars’ singing voice is lithe and supple, smooth as a pair of fresh-pressed slacks, though he’d occasionally let it loose like a kid relinquishing his grip on a balloon to watch it soar up and away.

In his songs, he mostly plays the role of tender-hearted Lothario, a carefully calibrated mix of naughty and nice, who puts his woman on a sky-scraping pedestal (“On top of the world is where I stand when you’re back in my life;” “If perfect’s what you’re searching for, then just stay the same”), takes the blame when love goes bad (“My selfish ways caused a good strong woman like you to walk out my life”) and then flashes a decidedly more steamy side (“Clothes are not required for what we got planned”).

Throughout the show, Mars winked at his seductiveness, pausing at one point to find a lady in the crowd for he and a trio of his bandmates to engage in a bit of competitive sweet talking.

Turns out the woman was named Page.

“I’d like to turn your page all night long,” Mars purred without missing a beat. lol

Then the band lunged into “Runaway Baby,” a concussive, full-contact funk throw down where Mars sang into a bullhorn at one point.

“Run away, baby, before I put my spell on you,” he cautioned, knowing full well that it had already been cast.

Concert Review: Bruno Mars

MGM Grand Garden Arena, Aug. 3

advertisement

While I liked Bruno Mars going in, I emerged a fan. The first thing that is noticeably refreshing about Mars (a.k.a. Peter Hernandez) is that he’s still happy to be “here,” and it shows in his performance. The one-hour, 45-minute show started on time and was without pretense. He sang, played guitar and drums and threw in a bit of humor between sets. Mars fronts a band of horn players that complement his blues-jazz-R&B-pop blend. With his two-album career arsenal of hits, Mars is the Prince of the new generation. Can’t wait to see him again in five and 10 years to chart his progression. ★★★★☆

Review from last nights show at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado (Aug. 5)

Bruno Mars at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, 8-5-13 (review)

By Rachel Chaparro

Leave it to Bruno Mars and his ultra hip band the Hooligans to send the school girls, seniors and slightly middle-aged women wild. Dubbed the “Hawaiian Lion” by band mate James King, Mars was soulful, spiritual, sophisticated and sexy – wrapped in a 5-foot-5-inch package — at Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Monday.

With a burst of fog, horns and a flock of parrots on the overhead screen, Mars kicked the night off with “Moonshine.” From there the show became non-stop, star-studded and choreographed dance moves of Jackson 5 proportions. The crowd nearly came undone with the funky, saucy cover of “Money (That’s What I Want),” a 1959 hit single by Barrett Strong, which suddenly transitioned into “Billionaire.”

There was as much swooning as an Elvis show with women squealing, covering their mouth in awe – even a few bras managed to make it to the stage. The gushing display didn’t go unnoticed. Mars and his handsome Hooligans made out like bandits and soaked it all in, even calling out a woman in the front row named Gabby.

“Listen up gentlemen, if you ever get the chance to get on stage with the band it don’t matter if you can’t sing, you can’t dance or you ain’t looking fly. It’s R&B 101; all you have to do is get on stage and say ‘daaammmnnn,’” Mars said. Then each member of the band vied for Gabby’s attention, serenading her with love lines like, “You so fine I would lick the bottom of your feet.”

Midway through the show the stage transformed into a shimmering, gold disco Vegas backdrop with stage lifts that looked like a flashing billboard and gold line drum set. The stage was perfect for the crowd clapping, sing-a-longs “Treasure,” “Locked Out of Heaven” and “Marry You.” As if the combination of screams, singing and band weren’t enough to fill the mountain amphitheater, Mars pulled out a megaphone during “Runaway,” just in case the back row couldn’t hear.

Mars noted there was “There’s a special place on my heart for old school music,” which was obvious in a show that channeled Michael Jackson, Bob Marley and James Brown all at once. The night ended with a New Years Eve-type bang that included confetti canon, larger than life sparkles, big booms, an array of pyrotechnics and Mars raised on an elevated stage for a killer drum solo.

Review of last nights concert--concert #2 at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado (Aug. 6):

Bruno Mars at Red Rocks, 8/6/13

Categories: Last Night

Michael Jackson was alive and well at Red Rocks last night in the form of one Mr. Bruno Mars. Mars, decorated in an animal-print shirt and gold jewelry, was ever the showman for a nonstop ninety-minute set, jiving and moonwalking and pelvic-thrusting his way across the Red Rocks stage. (There were also moments of pure "This Is It" proportions, when the stage lights went down and Mars stood -- no, posed -- with arms extended and hat tipped in homage to this M.J. image.)

Mars, a ladies' man through and through, never let up, not even once. Taking cues from other R&B greats as well (namely, Prince), Mars was a full-fledged entertainer, performer, bandleader packaged into one helluva charming guy. For every song, he truly knew how to sell it... and make you feel as if you were the only person in the entirety of the sold-out amphitheater.

The Moonshine Jungle Tour, however, would be nothing without Mars's band, with a horn section, electric and bass guitars, keys, hype boy-slash-backing vocalist and drummer, who just so happens to be Mars's brother. Eric. These musicians, known collectively as The Hooligans, were pure fun -- the whole set felt like a long, catchy jam sesh among buddies, including some pretty direct come-ons to the single ladies in the audience.

For "Nothin' on You," Mars proclaimed, "If the ladies don't have a man tonight, don't trip. We got you." Then, bam! The trumpet, trombone and saxophone players are center stage gyrating in front of all the ladies. Imagine a 2013 version of Morris Day & the Time playing and dancing in perfect step to "The Bird." Yep.

That same synchronization was a consistent theme throughout the show. "Treasure," the funkiest song of the night, was all Hooligans and all steps. Mars even picked out a lucky lady during the second verse to direct his vocal performance. And, as you can imagine and your teenage daughter can fantasize, the choreography for the medley of "Show Me," "Pony" and "Ignition (Remix)" could have made even 2013 Prince blush.

Mars appreciates his predecessors, and at points gave subtle nods to all those who paved the way before him. Though any direct musical references to Michael Jackson were strikingly absent, Mars tipped his fedora to Prince during a performance of "Marry You" that included a riff straight from Prince's "Adore."

Likewise, "Grenade," amped up by brass, included a slight lift from the Cure's "Love Song." Mars' flat-out cover of "Money (That's What I Want)" by Barrett Strong was an unexpected treat, with the brass crew on blast and Mars himself shredding a mean electric guitar. When Mars and his hype boy took on Mars' own "If I Knew," it felt as if they were three men shy of a modern Temptations lineup.

Mars shone most -- and received the most praise from fans -- with his own songs. If ever there was a question about who could rival Justin Timberlake as a successful solo male pop star in the 21st century, where Top 40, and particularly pop music, are dominated by female singers and Pitbull collaborations, the answer comes in the form of Mars. "When I Was Your Man," the only piano-and-vocals song besides Adele's "Someone Like You" to be as successful in the sales and radio play charts, was pure emotion and easily the only time in which Mars truly showed off his voice by straying from melody enough to feel fresh.

The evening's standout performances came in the encore, when Mars launched into a percussive onslaught by beginning "Locked Out Of Heaven" with a two- or three-minute-long drum solo. What followed was more Morris Day & the Time choreography and swaggerific grins, plus the undeniable highlight of the evening and encore follow-up, "Gorilla."

Truly, "Gorilla," a more "sensitive" song in his catalog for its subject material (sex so primal and animalistic it's like two gorillas got together), outshone all others because it was the whole package: It had flash (the backdrop screens were finally used for a pretty intense jungle visual, complete with gorillas) and bang (pyrotechnics) and depth (sample lyric: If the neighbors call the cops/Call the sheriff, call the SWAT -- we don't stop/We keep rocking while they're knocking on our door).

In a way, then, Mars and the Hooligans are a lot like "Gorilla." They too were flashy all night. Their music popped, and they appeared to have a deep commitment to the performance. It was refreshing to see a performer who has already made it and perform as if he had something yet to prove, as if he were about to be sent home, regularly proving to you why he was headlining two nights at Red Rocks.

Opener Ellie Goulding, of "Lights" and "Starry Eyed" fame, was a bit of a mismatch to Mars' strong stage presence and naturally-conducive musical arrangements for a live show. Goulding struggled to really get going, but once she did -- once people started dancing along to her music -- she really transformed. To a point, the tracks from her album Halcyon sounded a bit samey in a live setting, though they did boom with Goulding's drum "solos," if you could call them that. "Anything Could Happen" was great -- one would argue it was a better performance than her most radio-friendly track, "Lights," which sounded good but left you feeling unmoved.

Goulding's voice, wonderfully unique and strong, shone despite a setlist that didn't do her any favors in the Red Rocks setting. Had the sun gone down at this point, with lights on the city and lights on the stage, Goulding's picks would have clicked more emotionally. But they didn't this time around.

FIVE THINGS I WROTE ON MY IPHONE AT BRUNO MARS

AT MGM GRAND GARDEN ARENA, AUGUST 3

Image

Bruno Mars and his band killed it at the MGM Grand Arena on August 3.

1. The crowd wasn’t feeling openers Fitz and the Tantrums, though they brought energy and killer tunes to the stage Saturday night. Recent hit “Out of My League” was the only song that resonated with the drowsy crowd.

2. No surprise here: Mars sounded fantastic, belting out “Grenade,” crooning through “If I Knew” and supplying superior falsetto on “Just the Way You Are.”

3. Some of the night’s most impressive performances were covers: Barrett Strong’s “Money (That’s What I Want)” is perfectly suited for Mars’ voice, and his vocals on B.o.B.’s “Nothin’ On You” and Travie McCoy’s “Billionaire” sounded just like the recordings. The audience favorite: a rendition of Ginuwine’s “Pony.”

4. I often found myself watching Mars’ band members, who flanked him, dancing in unison and killing it on their horns. (Mad props to the trombonist!) I’d see these guys sans Bruno. ( smile way to go Hooligans!)

5. The first encore started with a surprise: a drum solo from Mars himself. He tore it right up, then hopped off the stool to take the crowd into one big sing-along of smash summer hit “Locked Out of Heaven.” I could have left happy right then, but I stayed for closer “Gorilla.” You would have, too.

Damn, Naughty Kitty! I love your enthusiasm--too many dampers on this site lately. Bruno Mars is great... New artists are great. So, are the oldies... There's room for all... I just got tix to concerts I can afford this year--Steely Dan and my son got tix for the Red Elvises... Both groups playing locally and under $40.00... Trying to keep my live music addictions local and cheap... After all, I saw Bruno, Janelle Monae, and Mayer Hawthorne all in one concert for $30.00... He did numerous things MJ couldn't and didn't. lol But we lost the greatest entertainer ever and the other one has allowed being a Jehovah Witness (yeah I said it )lol to cramp his style. He's still a legend and will always be but a lot of people don't realize just how talented Bruno Mars is and has become.I come to this sight to talk and share and if necessary provide enlightenment on unknown facts and or issues. I have not disrepected anyone on here nor have I been negative. So hopefully you will be able to witness and/or shed light on my opinion/point of view since you experienced the concert yourself. Pepole who are die hard Prince fans (which now they can see I am) can learn what you and I NOW know. I went into the concert a mildly interested fan and emerged a Hooligan (the endearing term Bruno calls his loyal fans).

I get the peeps wanting to bail with all the negativity on this site... Not just for Prince! eek

Wow thank you Mjscarousal and Purplethunder! touched hug I'm so glad that you and others enjoy my thread. Another review of the 2nd night in Colorado show (Aug. 6)

Bruno Mars day two at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, 8-6-13 (review, video, photos)

Pro tip: If any of you out there need a little help stepping up your game, you might want to pay attention to Bruno Mars.

Mars and his band, the Hooligans, played the second of two sold out shows at Red Rocks on Tuesday night. And what they brought with them seemingly turned the audience into a shrieking mass of boy-crazy teenagers. (At least that’s what my left ear is telling me after a grown woman shrieked “I LOVE YOUUU!” into it for the entire show.)

The nine men on stage – a band including an entire horn section – packed song after song with over-the-top sexiness and swagger. Their dancing was coordinated, their clothes – classy vintage, and the sexual undertones of many of Mars’ songs were played out right before the audience’s eyes with plenty of pelvic thrusting and bedroom eyes. These guys were hot, they knew it, and they worked it with all they had, much to the audience’s delight.

Just as at the sold-out Monday night show, the band covered Barrett Strong’s “Money (That’s What I Want),” straight into “Billionaire,” the hit song Mars recorded with Travie McCoy. Mixed in were also covers of R. Kelly’s “Ignition” and Ginuwine’s “Pony,” both which caused many of the middle-aged women in the crowd freak out. See aforementioned shrieking lady mentioned above.

Mars has garnered comparisons to Michael Jackson, Prince and James Brown, among others, and it’s easy to see why. His onstage antics include Brown-esque call and response, unbelievable dancing, and even moments of a backlit, fedora-wearing Mars evoking iconic images of the King of Pop himself.

Mars makes no secret of how much old-school doo-wop and Motown inspire his sound, and he sent a shout out to both before performing the beautiful slow jam “If I Knew” from his 2012 album “Unorthodox Jukebox.”

Other highlights include the painful lovelorn ballad “When I Was Your Man,” an amped-up version of “Grenade,” and the funk-filled “Treasure.” For an encore, Mars performed a drum solo leading straight into his mega-hit “Locked out of Heaven.” And the night was capped off with the super-sexual “Gorilla,” leaving the audience breathless and yearning for more.

In other words, exactly what they set out to do.

Review of last nights concert (Aug. 8)

Bruno Mars is consummate showman at Scottrade Center show

There's something about a modern day soul savior from Hawaii that feels all sorts of out of order.

But everything was in place when Bruno Mars hit Scottrade Center’s stage Thursday night for his “Moonshine Jungle” tour, a jubilant affair that confirms Mars’ place as one of music’s fastest-rising stars.

It’s Mars’ long-awaited return to St. Louis after a 2010 show at concert club Pop’s.

Such a trajectory, from Pop’s to Scottrade Center, seems unparalleled and can easily backfire, but Mars was clearly up to the task.

And he didn’t even need a special surprise appearance from Ed Sheeran on “The A Team” and “Nothing on You” to help him pull it off, though that didn’t hurt (Mars jokingly accused the great Sheeran of trying to steal his thunder). It was Sheeran's only surprise spot on Mars' tour thus far.

Mars’ constantly thrilling 90-minute show was short on the special effects and gimmicks stuffed into some of his peers’ extravaganzas, save for the occasional pyro, strobe and laser lighting.

Mars and his band the Hooligans, pulling from Mars’ “Doo-Wops & Hooligans” (2010) and “Unorthodox Jukebox” (2012) albums and more, had little use for an abundance of showy thrills, serving as their own virtual special effects with their super choreography and soul revue-inspired set.

The pint-sized Mars proved himself a big, consummate performer, an everyman of an entertainer from his pleasing voice, warm personality, ability to engage and flirt with his audience, and his ease with a number of instruments including guitars and drums.

And he remained fully in step with the Hooligans, musicians who doubled as dancers and singers.

He came out of the box on fire Thursday with “Moonshine” and “Natalie,” and kept his promise made early on. “I came to get you moving,” he told the full house. “I came to get you sweaty.”

Fans kept moving and sweating as Mars carried them through songs such as the disco-swirling “Treasure,” the reggae-inflected “Show Me,” the ‘50s rock of “Runaway Baby” and “Money Make Her Smile,” which fittingly segued into Travie McCoy’s “Billionaire,” a song Mars helped write and produce.

Mars explored a decidedly more R&B, steamy side with “Our First Time,” putting his bedroom falsetto to the test while asking “can we turn down the lights darling,” and incorporated Ginuwine’s “Pony” and R. Kelly’s “Ignition” into the mix.

“If I Knew” was a old-fashioned finger-snapping ballad that introduced an entertaining segment where Mars battled with his band members over who was the coolest when it came to attracting woman. He referred to the lessons dispensed here as R&B 101.

“Marry You” brought out what he said was a first-ever for one of his shows -- a front row marriage proposal of two fans.

The always touching “If I Was Your Man” was a show stopper -- Mars said this signature ballad was his most hardest song to write and to sing.

Staples such as “Grenade,” “Just the Way You Are,” “Gorilla” and “Locked Out of Heaven,” the latter preceded by a Mars drum solo, sent fans home wanting more.

Smartly opening for Mars was U.K. import Ellie Goulding, who sold out the Pageant with her headlining show earlier this year. Goulding, with her EDM-lite sounds, kept the anxious crowd warmed up with songs such as “Lights,” “Anything Can Happen” and “I Need Your Love.”

Another sweet moment during last night's concert, during the song "Just The Way You Are" Bruno serenades two sisters at one point, even kisses one of them on the hand! mushy Here's a comment from one of the sisters about that special moment on Youtube:

Neva Ripplinger 9 hours ago

i just want to say thank you for posting this!!!

that is me & my sister in the video & i was so glad someone captured it on video.

lol to Heline - i am the bigger Bruno fan, & although he sang to my sister (she is in a wheelchair) "most" of the time, she fckin deserves it!

besides, hanging out with Phil afterward was more than i could've asked for that night wink

i feel so blessed...probably the greatest night of my life!

Another great review of last night's concert in St. Louis:

Style, substance and dynamic energy are the first words that come to mind when thinking of red hot pop star Bruno Mars. The 27 year Hawaiian old brought his arsenal of hits to town for a much anticipated date on his 'Moonshine Jungle Tour' at Scottrade Center on Thursday. His first St. Louis concert since a 2010 engagement at Pop's in Sauget. A near sold-out house welcomed Mars and his fantastic band, The Hooligans, to the stage with open arms and from the first notes of the set opener "Moonshine", you could tell this night was going to be on fire. It seems that Bruno combines his immense showmanship with great musical chops which combine to make for one furious package of a live act.

Mars seems hard to pigeonhole into one genre. The multi-platinum juggernaut mixes some parts pop, some parts funk and some parts soul and the thing is, they all come together to form a perfect mix. In just a few short years, Mars has become one of the hottest names in music and after witnessing his live offering, it is easy to see why. It seems that his high octane live act surpasses his studio offerings, and that is quite a feat in itself. Huge numbers like "Treasure" and "Billionaire" moved energy to an 11 early in the set on this night and the shrieking crowd could not have enjoyed it more.

The show was not huge on production, but it didn't need it. The musical talent was the star of the show. A large LED screen behind the stage projected some imagery and there were a few glimpses of lasers and huge lights, but the band on stage was all the show that you needed to witness. And, damnit, it felt good for the duration of the 100 minute set that seemed to have a perfect ebb and flow to it. Ever the showman, Mars even threw in a few covers for good measure with a medley of "Pony" (Ginuwine) and "Ignition" (R. Kelly) mixed in the middle of "Our First Time" in one of the more memorable moments of the evening. There was also a front-row marriage proposal during the sleek "Marry You" in what was a very cool moment. (She said yes)

Mars also surprised the Scottrade Center crowd by inviting Englishman (and rising star) Ed Sheeran and his acoustic guitar on stage for an awesome collaborative version of "The A-Team". Sheeran has been supporting Taylor Swift on her immense world tour so it was an unexpected moment that really seemed to be "the moment" of the show. It seemed Bruno could do no wrong on this night. As the set made its way to the later stages, there were a ton of hits to get to. A sexy version of "When I Was Your Man" flowed over the crowd like a Summer breeze as everyone got just a little bit closer. Mars vocals were nearly perfect throughout.

Two of the biggest songs in Bruno's catalog were up next to close out the main set as absolutely decimating versions of "Grenade" and "Just The Way You Are" brought the crowd to a near frenzied pitch as they sang each word back to the stage note for note. With that, Mars and his band took a bow and left the stage to a thunderous ovation.

The band returned to the stage a short time later and Mars busted out another Number 1 hit. He seems to have a lot of those. The band flowed through a perfect version of "Locked Out Of Heaven" and closed the set with an aggressive take on "Gorilla" which seemed an odd encore closer, but for the rest of the show that was given, we can let that slide.

All in all, I must say that this was one of the most impressive live performances from ANY genre that I have seen in a long time. Playful at times, sexual at times and smiling always, Bruno Mars has certainly found his way. Don't miss him if you get the chance.
