Boy George at Yoko Ono's Meltdown - New music and tour on horizon and it sounds brilliant! Just got back from this fantastic performance and, since I know there are at least a handful of Boy George/Culture Club fans on the board, thought I would share a few titbits:
- First (as you may know), there is a new album due out at the end of the summer. The performance ran from 6pm to 7.30, and he mostly did new stuff, with just four or five hits thrown in (and also To Be Reborn, my favourite, yay! ). For my part, I loved the new stuff - it was very mellow and soulful, perfect for his voice as it is now, with a few reggae and country beats here and there (not at the same time!) to spice things up.
- He sounds really good. His voice is lower and more gutteral than it used to be (not sure how much this is the product of age vs drug abuse), but still powerful and emotive, definitely worth hearing live if you can (he's also a really fun and funny performer, no trouble filling up the stage even now that he's all skinny).
- There's going to be a tour to promote the album, with dates being announced tomorrow (Monday).
- Culture Club are still planning to release new material as a band in the future.
So yeah, based on this performance, he seems like he's really excited to relaunch his music career for its own sake (rather than throwing some random songs together to promote something else, or bitch at someone), and is going about it in all the right ways.

Did it sound anything like that awful Lana Del Rey cover he did awhile back?

Please check-out his new song/video, "Coming Home." It's excellent!

It didn't, but as you have already said that you don't like anything he's done post-CC, I suspect you won't like this either.

Funny, that sounds completely different to the old school stuff he was showcasing last night. Don't really like this, too techno.

Haha well okay, this stuff doesn't actually sound much like anything he's done that I'm aware of, so who knows, you might get lucky this time! [Edited 6/24/13 10:10am]

I used to be a big Culture Club fan and liked some of his earlier solo work, but I absolutely hate his voice now. He sounds 100 years old.
Not too excited about the super mellow country and reggae sound. Striped down arrangements only accent the weakness of his voice now. Plus, I'm not a fan of either country or reggae. The Coming Home song is actually pretty good. The electronics cover up the weakness of his voice so it's not as noticeable. It's not really techno, it's more of pop/dance sound more like Madonna or Gaga whom I enjoy. Some of his other dance music was really super hard techno which I didn't like but this is much more pop and melodic. [Edited 6/24/13 15:13pm]
