Pretty Lights and sampling There's always been a hoo-haa when it comes to musicians using sampling. Some are appreciated and others are derided, the latest one being Will.i.am and Chris Brown's "Let's Go" which came under intense backlash. On the other hand, we have artists like Pretty Lights who's "Finally Moving" did full justice to the sample. And he's gone on to make some good originals as well, with "Around the Block" coming at the top of my mind.

I prefer a sampling artist to one that just plays covers (and there are a tonne of those).

Technically, sampling has always existed, even before there were sampling machines.
James Brown/Hot = David Bowie/Fame Led Zeppelin/Lemon Song = Howlin’ Wolf/Killing Floor
You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I like the golden era of hip hop- when they were rocking primarily James Brown samples- Mainly because thats a sound that JB perfected that (IMO) has never been bettered.. The kind of grooves that are undeniable & that you can happily hear looping for 5 mins.
