I just saw EWF in concert last sunday and they were great. The crowd was great. You can count on one hand the number of times the crowd actually took a seat. It's amazing judging from the audience that EWF managed to cross genres and bring people together. I don't know of any other band in the business that can accomplish that the way they have. Maybe only Kool & The Gang but not to the extent EWF has. They played all the favorites and lesser known favorites. My favorite was watching Phillip bring out the Kalimba and jumping into Kalimba Story and Evil. I actually like the new single and i'm surprised the band didn't mention it during the show. Phillip's son tours with the band now and sings and plays percussion but his voice is nowhere near as good as pops but you can count on one hand the number of people in the biz whose voice is. I saw them in Boston on June 1 and was able to catch them in their early afternoon soundcheck.
Phil and the group practised this song, and Phil ran thru an introduction to the song in the soundcheck, but they did not play the song in the actual concert. I did not catch the title at the time as the sound man had not fully setup the equipment but when I heard this snippet I recognised the tune.
It is great to hear all the important EWF signatures at play here...except, of course, without Maurice's vocals........
Maybe this will be a retro summer...Daft Punk with their smash hit echoeing the 70s and EWF going back to do their style music....it is a nice change of pace to hear the Mighty Elements doing their style of music as opposed to others singing songs influenced by them (Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake, for example). Unfortunately the Master, Maurice White, has Parkinsons disease so is unable to flex his vocal muscles the way we know, love and cherish, so he is not on this track as far as I am aware....although it is possible that we may still hear from him on the album itself.
The official website earthwindandfire.com will have the list of the present members.
From what I recall of the recent concert i attended in Boston, they played all the classics you know and love.....some snippets of lesser known tunes (to the casual fan, that is!!) like On Your Face and Fall In Love With Me....they have performed Gratitude recently, as well as Kalimba Story.......they rehearsed a couple of newer tunes, including this new tune, and had a song caled Ghetto Groove on the song list for the show, but did not play that...although I suspect that you will get to hear alot more from the new album once they hit Europe...so stay tuned!!!

Not sure if I detect The Emotions along with Phil on the chorus. | |
