Hmm... I'm not feeling this song (Sunlight) but I look foward to listening to the remaining songs from this album.

Does anyone know what brand of acoustic bass Andrew Levy is playing? cool

The two N'Dea tracks are my favourites on the album because I just luuuuuuuurve her voice! The new singer (Dawn Joseph) is OK, but her voice doesn't do much for me.

I saw them live a few weeks are and was VERY disappointed it wasn't N'Dea singing with them. Looks like she won't be performing with them a lot.

The entire album drags on a bit, by the way, and in places sounds more like Incognito than BNH.

Just like the white winged dove...

Sunlight sounds great. Perfect summer jam.

It's too bad N'dea is not with the band full time. She is the Brand New Heavies. Well, at least I got to see them live, when they toured with "Get Used It." One of the funnest shows I've ever attended.

Famed London acid jazz group the Brand New Heavies are set to make heads turn with their latest studio record in almost seven years, Forward, which drops tomorrow. Jan Kincaid, Simon Bartholomew and Andrew Levy, as well as original vocal contributor N’Dea Davenport and Dawn Joseph, a new vocalist, create a high energy funk and soul groove with a twist of disco. If anything, BNH is indefatigable – they’re constantly touring and always on the road. Check out what Jan Kincaid had to say:

On getting back in the recording game after an almost seven-year hiatus:

We were really motivated by a sense of frustration. We had been on the road for a long time and were reinventing our business, changing management, and many of us were starting families. So we were extremely productive. We have a live album but a studio record was long, long overdue. We were more than ready to go forward, but our frustration was the motivating factor. The title of the album is a reflection on moving forward into the new millennium. We’re the same band, but this album is a fresh outlook. And it’s uplifting.

On people's different reactions to funk music:

You can see a lot of new people coming into funk, especially a lot of young people. It seems there’s a lot of interest in NY, especially in the Afrobeat scene. But it’s mainly young people interested in the music – it’s accessible, dynamic, exciting, and people can feel it. If you look at today’s pop music and alternative, funk is the antithesis of that. As much as people want to plug into the matrix and be a part of the machine, there’s a lot of people who want something more real.

On the new record:

On every record we do, we’re refining our sound. I feel this is the best record we made since Shelter in ’96. I think that was our last really strong album. Don’t get me wrong – we’ve had releases with strong records and singles, but this is the strongest thing we've done in years, and we’re really proud of that. There are things on there that sound like they were made back in the day; some things that sound slightly changed. We also have Dawn Joseph who delivers old material in great way, too. Jan Kincaid sings on two cuts, as does Simon Bartholomew. And there are loads of instrumentals. There’s something on here for old fans and new ones, too.

On aspirations for the upcoming year:

Our goal is to tour this year, and keep putting our music out there. The new stuff's being well received wherever we’re going. So for the indefinite future, we’ll just continue to tour and continue to put to put out albums. We've all got little projects on the go, but ultimately we make music. This is our day job.

Ndea has major issues with her TBNH bandmates

from her facebok page

Dont be shy about making a comment....lol. They are not shy about fooling you into thinking I am gonna be at these shows...lol.

  • *NEW INCOMING DISCLAIMER!!!! Many of you ask...so I will tell. I will not be appearing on any Brand New Heavies shows in Switzerland. I have never been invited to it nor do I know anything about it. Again...I know nothing about this show as well as many others that you are told I will be there when" I HAVE NOT BEEN INVITED...yet it's advertised as many other concerts have been with The Brand New Heavies...that I will be appearing. Now what would you do? What do you suggest that I do ?
    should I do?
  • @ Bill Henry...A cut of the money for using me for ticket sales? A cut of the money? Shall we send a dove with a message in a bottle to remind them to just pay N'Dea...lol?. Especially since no one makes an effort to return emails or phone calls. This is only 50% of the problem by the way. They dont respond to me or members of my team...Maybe they will respond to you.

In 2008, Siedah Garrett gave an interview to Essence magazine. Here's her comments about the Heavies:

Essence.com: That's hilarious! You also worked with the Brand New Heavies. How was that experience?

S.G.: (Feigning a British accent) Dahling, I lived in London for two years. The Brand New Heavies are really different. The group has been together since they were in grade school and they’ve always had an American lead female singer yet they hate her because she is the focus of the group. I started with the group as a writer and wrote an equal number of songs for each of the band members. For a year and a half, they had several auditions to look for a lead female vocalist they couldn’t find anyone who could sing the demos I done for them and they asked if I wanted to be in the band so I said sure. It was a combination that didn’t work out because of personality clashes. It was fine when I was writing from afar but touring and recording with them was a different animal. I lasted for one record because it was all I could stand.

Essence.com: Making music isn’t always harmonious. The Heavies and N’dea Davenport have reunited.

S.G.: N’dea Davenport and the group, they fall out all the time and she comes back and that’s their deal but evidently it’s beneficial for both.

Essence.com: What works for one person doesn't necessarily work for the next.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
