Oh hell to the nizzaw I'm about 2 get raw Ain't about 2 tell u more Cos you about to see the score Kanye ain't nothing but a sampling whore.
That little bit of doggerel probably outstrips most of his "Musical" output
If you are looking at hip hop type dudes, Pharell and Will.I.Am far outstrip him and that rubber lipped dude married to Beyonce.
Of our time, maybe Madonna, she has endurability, but otherwise its Prince, he still around and he still making music. Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

We are not pretending they are not all that. If you think Lady GaGa or Kanye or going to have long time effects on popular music you are smoking crack. I think Prince is the best of his generation and these two have not done half of what he was doing at his age. These two cannot not match real talent from the 1960s put Kanye or GaGa in a room with Jimi Hendrix or Santana. Come back in 10 years and these two will be a distant memory.

A distant memory? They are that in 2013 in my house.

Kanye has had the most impact in hip-hop of the last 10 years and people said in 2005 he would be a nobody by 2007 and in 2009 said the same and now it is 2013 and people say the same. Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

The first question I had in this thread was defining what "our time" meant. Because a lot of orgers weren't around when Miles died, a definition can be problematic.

He sucks and he's really dumb. But he has produced some good shit...here and there. "Keep in mind that I'm an artist...and I'm sensitive about my shit."--E. Badu

In order to be the greatest musician, he have to actually be...you know...a musician. Which he isn't. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

But even asking the question says a lot about today's music, dominated by so many non-musicians. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Since you all are crazy about the ''sampling'' thing what about songs that have musicians playing on them? what about the ones where Kanye helped compose the orchestra for it... Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

IMO I don't see anything in Kanye that might help him to be a great musician, to be honest, I gave MBDTF a shot and It impressed me with only a couple of things: The Instrumentals and the sampling, other than that just sucks especially the lyrics (I don't find any lyrical depth in that, which drives me crazy everytime somebody says Kanye is a better lyricist than Eminem for example). So in hope for a discussion that may help me get into his musicanship I see that even people here in the org can't stand his music.. And for the title, I took it from another thread discussed in an other music forum, most of the members there agreed that Kanye is the greatest in our era... But in Prince.org people have another opinion..
At anyways, Kanye is a great producer tho I think Dr. Dre is ten times better than him (Lyrically and Musically), for example The Chronic is a masterpiece album, and when you listen to it, You realise that IT IS actually a masterpiece, unlike Late Registration or MBDTF, You see all the hype by Pitchfork and stuff.. You listen to it, and it takes only 5 minutes to realize It is like any other rap album by any other rapper from GOOD Music/Def Jam records.. (Drake, Jay-Z...) [Edited 6/13/13 15:09pm]

what? Dr. Dre talks about fake gang banging and fucking bitches and you think he is a better lyricsts? i don't get that... Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

The Chronic was cool when i was a kid but why do people say it's a masterpiece? i mean it kind of started tons of negative and awful trends in hip-hop that still resonate today Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Kanye is probably THE best hip hop artist out right now, and possibly in the running for of all time, but have things devolved THAT much where we're comparing him to Phil Spector in terms of producing???

I'll say it now--put Prince (at their ages) in a room with Jimi Hendrix or Santana. He very well might have completely failed to bring it.
God knows he blew it on stage with James Brown and Michael Jackson.
Of course, what the heck is with all this putting people in the room with other people as an argument for greatness anyway? How does that prove their greatness? Are they meant to battle it out or collaborate? And how exactly does a guitar battle work out?
I don't get it. | |
