Melba Moore in the Early 90's

Anybody know what (REALLY) happened with her? Drugs? It's always conveniently avoided as in her Unsung special. Just curious. I can't imagine drug use with a voice like that and I know she was sued for slander (of her ex-husband, Beau) and it was ruled in HIS favor. Thanks! smile

I've followed Melba closely, especially during the 80's and never heard of any rumored drug use. Her husband left her broke and penniless. She was on Geraldo Riveria in the late 90s discussing it.

She was really struggling for a while and she left her daughter to stay with Bill Cosby while she and ex-hubby battled things out in court. I kinda think there was more to it than she was telling because she said he just all of a sudden filed for divorce and she didn't even see it coming.confused After the divorce papers came, she was dropped from Capitol Records and no one in the business would touch her with a ten-foot pole. She said her husband blacklisted her from the industry. I didn't think he had that much power until I heard Freddie Jackson discussing him on his Unsung episode so I guess he had more power in the industry than I thought.

Hey, kit! Thanks 4 commenting! Sounds like Helen Reddy's husband, Jeff Wald. Same scenario. She gave up the industry because he blacklisted her and she ended up just moving back to her homeland, Australia to become a licensed psychotherapist. Very sad, but there IS karma and people need 2b careful with their actions. Huggins seems really astute and quite the "businessman." LOVE Miss Melba! R&B MAJESTY!!! smile

Wow! I didnt' know Helen Reddy was blacklisted from the industry. Was her husband managing her career, too? I don't think it's smart if you are an entertainer to let your spouse manage your career and finances. I know people like to live in this fairytale land, thinking their marriages are going to last forever. When the fact is, most don't and if your spouse who you're not so in love with anymore, has control over your finances/career, you are going to be up shit's creek. lol

I remember when Melba was on the Geraldo Show and she said she and her husband were both at home together when she was served with the divorce papers. She said she showed him the papers and asked him what was this all about? He told her not to worry about it. It meant nothing. eek confused I found that kinda hard to believe that he would be at home with her on the day the papers were served, pretending like everything was normal. But, I don't know, I'd heard of crazier things happening.

For a brief moment in 1977,Helen's husband Jeff was also managing Donna Summer, but it was a disastrous partnership.Donna eventually fired him, saying "He's supposed to be my manager but he hasn't even seen me perform! He was lways too busy hannging out in Hawaii with his wife".
