And this whole time, I thought it was a Coolio song from 1994. Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

it was.....and his song was called Fantastic Voyage
not only did he sample the original, but he used the same title
this one song made his career
and that's why I've been against the whole concept of sampling for stuff like this...

But I mean was the original even a hit, or was it only a r and b chart hit, because generally songs that did not crossover are hardly heard of in New Zealand.
Its a shame as that Lakeside version is great, some funky as hell basswork, synths and cool lyrics. Its a million times better than the Coolio remake. Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

the Lakeside song was a SMASH.I don't know if it crossed over, but it was a major hit with R&B/funk audiences...back in 1980.

Fantastic Voyage made it to 55 on the pop chart, so it was a minor hit there. But this was the early 1980s when dance R&B had a harder time getting played on Top 40 radio, as a result of the "disco sucks" backlash, and there was a lot of soft rock and arena rock. Fantastic Voyage was popular on R&B radio and made it to #1 on Billboard's "Hot Soul Singles" chart. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

You forgot about Gangster's Paradise which samples Stevie Wonder's Pastime Paradise. This song may have even trumped the former. I don't have numbers in front of me now. Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

the title track is ferocious, but my favorite track on that album has always been "Your Love Is On The One"...which is probably my favorite Lakeside song, period.
