MissCarousel, I love you, but I can't get with her. I do like that Janelle is not like everyone else, but I can't get with her. I just can't. But I also think Jasmine Sullavan is overrated and that Amy Winehouse is 10x better than Adele.

Okay now I do respect this. Nobody doesnt have to like her but I think its hating to throw her in the same sentence with the crap that is out now when she clearly is an artist that tries to be creative. She deserves some credit. O and I love u too script!

Now your last sentence, I agree 100%!!!!! but the reason why Adele is overrated is because she is better than most of her peers. She is better than Chris, Rihanna, Beyonce, Lady Gaga (dont care if I get bashed she is lol ) etc. She might not be as talented and creative as Amy but she is a better artist than her current counterparts. She came out during a period people were longing for more quality music which as a result turned her into a big pop star.

Janelle's problem in the past has been that she doesn't have a hit. I don't think she tries too hard to be different; she IS different and she just keeps doing what she does. That's cool if you only want to have a small audience of hardcore fans. IMO, Janelle needs a solid song with a strong hook that falls in a standard structure. I don't think that entails dressing provocatively or trying to whore yourself out to your peer group. It just involes try to write something that is you but is in a format that most people can digest. Bruno Mars is a hook master. You may not like that sacchrine pop he does but you can at least remember his songs without effort. In the long run, that makes them effective. She needs an "effective" song. Every artist who is "famous" in the mainstream sense has that. She does not. Her talent, look and style are not at question. She has everything that makes a musical icon. She can sing. She is unique. She can dance. The only thing she is missing is a hit; a REAL hit. Until she writes one, she is not going to register with the mainstream public well.

More like a signature song you mean. Since Bruno and Janelle are close friends i'd like to see a collaboration.

Why Janelle Monae is't so famous?

She certainly has enough money behind her to be able to break out with a hit. I mean, people have heard about her. I'm all the way in New Zealand, for goodness sake!

She hasn't written/recorded a hit melody. That's all there is to it.

Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and...kiss, kiss...

Are you serious? lol I need an explanation lol I love her to death!!! (and I dont like alot of artists of this generation)

Can you give me examples of why you feel this way? She doesnt get any attention or accolades from the mainstream industry. So I dont know why you feel she is trying hard to impress people. If she was trying hard to get peoples attention she would be making the same crap Beyonce and Rihanna makes. She would be dressing the same way they dress. She would be prancing around on stage and doing provocative sexual photo shoots but she doesnt. I LOVE her style and everything she stands for. She teaches young women to love who THEY ARE and to embrace their uniqueness. She teaches women they dont have to look like a slut to be beautiful, have a 1000 dollar weave or have permed hair to be successful. She sings about social issues, politics and positive things. She is what we NEED in this triflin crappy music world right now.

Is it her music or the way she dresses? Because Im sorry the girl really is special and there nothing annoying about her. She is one of the best acts that has came out of the new millenium. I think she is the best female act that has came out of the new milenium. She has the WHOLE package: she writes her own music, plays some instruments, produces, dances, great singer, good performer, makes quality music and not that it matters she is very beautiful inside and out.

There is nothing contrived about Janelle Monae, NOTHING. Yea the suit and tie is a gimmick but the girl clearly has talent and obviously chooses to make artistic music instead of stripping butt naked and singing dumb songs to get played on the radio. She also is very intellectual and SINCERELY seems down to earth. If she wanted to get notice she could easily go that route but she chooses not to because she is a REAL artist and doesnt care about the fame, awards, hits etc.

I dont know about folks here but Im tired of the media trying to make me believe some skanky ass bimbo represents women empowerment when they clearly are not an artist and are only successful because they have good promotion and make elementary music. Its refreshing to see not only a woman but a beautiful BLACK woman who wants to play by her own rules, make the music she wants to make, dress the way SHE wants to and not care what people think about her.

You just done PREACHED up in here with that post MsCarousel!!! clapping clapping clapping This x 1000 especially that last paragraph!

I agree lol

She has a great voice, she can dance and has good "natural" stage presence. But to me she does come accross as annoying and boring. I think she has great potential but she needs to embrace who she is instead of trying to be different from other "girls" by channeling male entertainers (MJ, Prince, James Brown).

I also agree. She tries waaay too hard to be "different" by desperately acting quirky on stage. She looks like she's having a fit half the time. You can give an entertaining/energetic performance without looking like you're having a seizure. James Brown used to give everything he had but it never came across as desperate. Janelle Monae reaks of desperation at times. I appreciate that at least tries newer ideas but wish she would take it down a few notches and be more natural in her approach. cool

No I don't think she is embracing herself because IMO she hasn't yet found out who she is as an artist. And NO I didn't say that she had to dress like a skank because she is a female artist. What I do think is that she tries hard to make obvious cultural references to male artists only, but there is nothing wrong with embracing yoursef as a woman like let's say, Adele, who does not dress like a Skank but embraces her womanhood.

Like I said, I think she has talent and potential, but right now she doesn't do it for me because I don't think she comes accross as an exciting or genuine artist. Then again, I do agree with some of the other posters who say that what she needs is a "hit" song. Maybe that's where the problem is; her music is good but is not great nor exciting. MO.

I meant what I said. A signature song would help but in order to have one of those, you need a hook people can remember. Her songs lack strong hooks and the ones that do have hooks have obscure arrangements.

For example, if I say Marsha Ambrosius "Late Nights Early MOrnings", you could easily sing that if you know it. A hook is songwriting 101. She chooses to bend that rule, which is cool if you have already shown that you can follow it. Until she does, she's always going to be niché. There is nothing wrong with that, either.

^So the music that Chris Brown and Rihanna makes is exciting? Help me to understand. I agree she needs a big hit but she makes exciting music in this lackluster industry. Im not calling her Mozart but she sincerely tries to be creative which I cant say for alot of the acts out now.

I completely disagree with your judgemental assumptions on how she perceives her womanhood. Who are you to say how she should perceive her womanhood? It just seems like you ignorantly believe she doesnt embrace her womanhood because she wears a suit and tie. She sings about women issues, wears make up and doesnt wear a suit and tie all the time. She clearly emphasizes that she is pro woman and identifies with her womanhood by singing about issues and topics that effects women. She also make it clear that she can still be sexy without dressing like a skank or the ideals society places on women to dress. I just feel like you dont necessarily have to put a dress on like you are implying to show your "womanhood". I just kinda feel like thats judgemental and puts women in a box, a box that women have been placed in for centuries. Let her be who she is. If she wants to wear a suit or puff, LET HER. It doesnt make her any less of a woman. Maybe in her mind thats how she shows her womanhood. Womanhood is more than about putting a dress on or wearing high heels. She is confident and I love her attitude. She embraces her womanhood to the fullest.

1. Ok so I posted my reponse stating several times it was IMO but you just assumed I'm ignorant because in Your Opinion I base my opinion in the fact that she wears a suit and tie?

2. See I don't know enough about her music (because I can't get into it) to know that she MAKES IT CLEAR that you can still be sexy without dressing like a skank. Again your assumption that I think women should dress like skanks in order to embrace their womanhood even though in my previous post I already stated your assumption was wrong.

3. I don't have to let her do anything because I'm sure my opinion means poop to Ms. Monae; again I don't give two craps whether or not she wears a suit and tie or a bunny suit. My opinion of her is based on her whole concept and I'm sure that if I connected to her music I would overlook the fact that she tries to pull a James Brown move every chance she gets.

4. Ok I will take this as YOUR opinion. See? I didn't have to go and assign my assumed meanings to your opinion like you did with mine.

Did you miss the other half of the sentence when I said OR the other ideals society places on women to dress? You even bolded it!!! So I dont know why you are still insisting that I said you think women should dress like skanks when I made other points besides that.

Why are you making judgements about her music when you havent even given it a chance? She doesnt have to be your favorite artist but just saying...

You are entitled to your opinion but dont make judgements about someones music if you havent even listened to it for yourself. Thats judgemental.

I have not made assumptions about nothing. lol You insisted that most of her input and cultural references is from males. You also implied that she does not idenitfy with her womanhood because of this which is why I insisted that just because she wears a suit and tie or have male influences doesnt mean she doesnt identify with her womahood. I think you should listen to more of her music before making conclusions about how she perceives her womanhood or music.

I think she'll get there. But, it's gonna take some time. It'll probalay be 3 or 4 albums into her career. Then she'll get THAT song. She maybe even get a few at once. And with that she'll bring in a large hardcore fan base! I've been following Janelle since before she was singed. And I've notice when her fans become hardcore they become HARDCORE!

I could see her having a kinda similar career to Prince. In she'll have a couple mega hits. Then never really have too many mega hits after that. But, those hits will draw a large loyal fan base. That will stay with her for a very long time!

She's annoying as hell. I love MissCarousel to death, but we will have to part ways here. Janelle tries to hard be different and artistic.

I couldn't said it better...

I agree lol

She has a great voice, she can dance and has good "natural" stage presence. But to me she does come accross as annoying and boring. I think she has great potential but she needs to embrace who she is instead of trying to be different from other "girls" by channeling male entertainers (MJ, Prince, James Brown).

what? she is clearly a female entertainer of course she is inspired by the people who have been said but she is even more inspired by erykah badu and lauryn hill

More like a signature song you mean. Since Bruno and Janelle are close friends i'd like to see a collaboration.

I would love to see that too.

I don't think they are friends at all..

Cold war hello...that song had hit material all over it but Tightrope was more successfull

What exactly would you attribute to her lack of big hits?
