In my opinion i think this girl is exactly an icon, i know she released only like 2 albums but her art, her style, her independance, those are things you don't find in any other female star like Rihanna or even Beyoncé, so i'm wondering why she's so underrated? I know fun. managed to win her some fans but that's not enough, she released Q.U.E.E.N. with a music video and that's a #1 song but it's not even in the Hot 100!!!

I definitly agree. Janelle has some songs that are radio friendly.

I think her main problem is she is not marketed properly. She shockingly has a big following despite her lack of promotion. She needs to get off of Badboys if she hasnt already.

Agree. The poster obviously doesnt listen to Monae.

Her problem is she's young so her base should be the teens but she doesn't make mindless, empty music so they'll listen to Rihanna and Nicki Minaj instead. Janelle's music is more mature but older fans aren't into her either. I think Janelle will be 1 of those artists who becomes more popular after the 3rd or 4th album I really think eventually she'll strike it big.

Queen made it to like 47 on the r&b chart but hasn't had chart success anywhere else.

And honestly i am fine with that cause Janelle is more than silly chart positions

she has a large followind despite the lack of promotion because she is amazing...imagine what she could do with the promotion other people has...she could be on top..

I like her but she could so with some catchier tunes. Her material can sound a bit too err... "experimental" - which isn't necessarily a bad thing but doesn't always generate bonafide hits, publicity or interest.

I agree and I like her (despite the fact I detest Queen - terrible song). I think she's over eccentric - almost like she's trying to prove apoint. I sitll think she is artistic and unique.

Anyway i don't understand the point, An artist is supposed to have different style, art and look, that's the method everybody should follow, if Michael didn't invent the short-film music video and dancing stuff, He wouldn't be THE Michael we know at the moment. If Prince didn't hit Falsetto like female singers and looked Gay while he wasn't, He wouldn't be PRINCE... I'm just sayin' the girl is being her, she got dope lyrics, great music, great voice, i think she'll do just fine if she keeps it up.

Can you give me examples of why you feel this way? She doesnt get any attention or accolades from the mainstream industry. So I dont know why you feel she is trying hard to impress people. If she was trying hard to get peoples attention she would be making the same crap Beyonce and Rihanna makes. She would be dressing the same way they dress. She would be prancing around on stage and doing provocative sexual photo shoots but she doesnt. I LOVE her style and everything she stands for. She teaches young women to love who THEY ARE and to embrace their uniqueness. She teaches women they dont have to look like a slut to be beautiful, have a 1000 dollar weave or have permed hair to be successful. She sings about social issues, politics and positive things. She is what we NEED in this triflin crappy music world right now.

Is it her music or the way she dresses? Because Im sorry the girl really is special and there nothing annoying about her. She is one of the best acts that has came out of the new millenium. I think she is the best female act that has came out of the new milenium. She has the WHOLE package: she writes her own music, plays some instruments, produces, dances, great singer, good performer, makes quality music and not that it matters she is very beautiful inside and out.

There is nothing contrived about Janelle Monae, NOTHING. Yea the suit and tie is a gimmick but the girl clearly has talent and obviously chooses to make artistic music instead of stripping butt naked and singing dumb songs to get played on the radio. She also is very intellectual and SINCERELY seems down to earth. If she wanted to get notice she could easily go that route but she chooses not to because she is a REAL artist and doesnt care about the fame, awards, hits etc.

I dont know about folks here but Im tired of the media trying to make me believe some skanky ass bimbo represents women empowerment when they clearly are not an artist and are only successful because they have good promotion and make elementary music. Its refreshing to see not only a woman but a beautiful BLACK woman who wants to play by her own rules, make the music she wants to make, dress the way SHE wants to and not care what people think about her.

MissCarousel, I love you, but I can't get with her. I do like that Janelle is not like everyone else, but I can't get with her. I just can't. But I also think Jasmine Sullavan is overrated and that Amy Winehouse is 10x better than Adele.

I agree

She has a great voice, she can dance and has good "natural" stage presence. But to me she does come accross as annoying and boring. I think she has great potential but she needs to embrace who she is instead of trying to be different from other "girls" by channeling male entertainers (MJ, Prince, James Brown).
