I'd Rather Be High - David Bowie

instant new classic, sounds like a dreamy Beatles song circa 2013

YUP! Love it!!!!

For me one of the best songs on the new album.

"I'd rather smoke & phone my ex, be pleading for some TEENAGE SEX! Yeah!

I'd Rather Be High"

biggrin

Now that the commotion caused by his comeback is more or less over, I think I can safely say that I like The Next Day more than Heathen and Reality. Actually, it's my favourite Bowie album since Outside. It's a very consistent work, and it has at least four tunes that are as good as anything he has written: "Where Are We Now?, "Valentine's Day", "You Feel So Lonely You Could Die" and "Heat". And there aren't tunes that I strongly dislike. Firstly I couldn't stand the chorus of "Dancing Out In Space", but now I find it good enough. Being a huge Bowie fan, I'm very, very moved by his comeback.

My guess is that he's going to release a new album soon, this time with interviews and maybe some live show.

not only that, I think it's really his best since Lodger/Scary Monsters

Outside had too much puzzling filler, and Heathen, despite being extremely strong, lacked the variety and the ASSURED pop/rock exuberance of The Next Day

by the way, who writes the guitar riffs? Bowie himself? The Next Day has some of the best guitar work I've heard IN A LONG TIME

My take on this song is that he's talking from the perspective of a young solder.

"I'd rathger be High

I'd rather be flying

I'd rather be dead or out of my head

than training these guns on those men in the sand

I'd rather be high"

I'm not sure. I've read that Bowie always needs a musical contributor to shape his musical ideas. If so, I guess the guitar riffs can be a collaborative work between Bowie, Visconti and the guitar player (Gerry Leonard or Earl Slick). Anyway, I agree that the guitar work is amazing.

One thing that contributes to make it an awesome album is its homogeneity. Yeah, always very well crafted pop/rock tunes. Maybe the song that is just a bit "out of place" is "Where Are We Now?", but it's SO brilliant...

Yeah, you're probably right.
