Joni: A Portrait in Song - A Birthday Happening

Massey Hall

http://roythomson.com/assets/images/eventimages/detail/ev_luminato_joni.jpg

Luminato Presents

Among the singer-songwriter icons that emerged in the 1960s, none remains more influential, or more beloved, than Joni Mitchell. To celebrate her 70th birthday and the brilliance of her genre-blurring artistry, Luminato brings together an all-star lineup of musicians and vocalists, including the 10-time Grammy Award winning, Queen of Soul Funk, Chaka Khan among others, to interpret the songs that shaped a generation and will continue to be shared, and felt, for generations to come.

Starring (in alphabetical order) Glen Hansard, Chaka Khan, Rufus Wainright plus very special guests TBA. Led by music directors Brian Blade and Jon Cowherd (featuring Melvin Butler, Bill Frisell, Jeff Haynes, Mark Isham, Marvin Sewell, and Chris Thomas). Produced in association with Danny Kapilian.

...Odd, though, that is billed as a 70th Birthday celebration in June... when Joni's birthday is in November. hmm

And the CBC now is reporting...

"Joining previously announced performers Chaka Khan, Glen Hansard and Rufus Wainwright for the musical tribute are:

  • Singer-songwriter Cold Specks
  • Singer and actor Liam Titcomb
  • Singer and composer Lizz Wright
  • Singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards
  • Grammy-winners Esperanza Spalding and Herbie Hancock, also a Mitchell friend and collaborator. The pair will perform at the second concert."

I sort of played my cards wrong: I Decided to forgo a Lianne La Havas show a couple months back to see Esperanza Spaulding -- and I thought Esperanza's show was only so so. shrug

I should have gone ahead and bought the La Havas tickets and waited to see Esperanza -- with Herbie Hancock -- at the upcoming Joni tribute show.

Where's Sylvia Browne when you need her? mad

Recent interview with Joni. It's long yet as enthralling as anything the woman has ever done.

Saw this link when 3rdEyeGirl tweeted it. Then I saw the length of it and was like, 'HELLLLL no." I thought I'd maybe just watch a couple of minutes to see what she's like in an interview setting and found myself sitting there for the entire 2 hours completely engrossed in everything that came out of her mouth. She is just such a wildly interesting person with such incredible insights. I kept wanting to smack the interviewer when he would cut her off and try to reel her in a bit. Let her talk! She fucking fascinating.

Yeah, I didn't think she would be since she has been put on vocal rest. I know she has to be heart-broken since Joni is one of her musical heros.

It was a decent interview. But, yes, Jian Gomeshi, the interviewer, is known for being a bit of a tool.

You may also like this interview of Joni that happened on Sunday afternoon at the University of Toronto. (It begins at 11:20):
