And another thing people talk about her "alternative" message but why about her being brainwashed by that preacher? All her friends and even Wyclef spoke out about it. She speaks about not letting others brainwash you and watch out for evil people in the "industry" yet she was rain washed by religious pimps and she thinks she can turn around and still have a message about society? She is as brainwashed as anyone else.

Hell, the "guru" she mentions in the song could just as well be about something she is going through.

I would be happy if by that guru she meant those fucked up preachers... But I doubt she would come to realize how bad they are at this moment.

Heaven knows there are some who are homophobes and keep it to themselves. Michelle Shocke really didn't mean what she did say I'm sure. I was always a fan of both of them. But don't you think there are others that keep it a secret?!

Michelle shock must have been pissed at an ex lover cause that girl is more lesbian then one can handle lol I don't believe at all that she is straight.

Yea yea yea I know alot of her personal troubles was a result of her own carelessness but does that make her crazy? Does that make her homophobic? Does that make her a evil person? I mean if you want to talk about being judgemental this is what is judgemental. Believing everything you hear without researching and giving labels to someone you dont even know. There is not one thing in the song that references to homophobia.

Mjc I have agreed with a lot of your statements about Lauryn. But simply her actions just make me think her message is bullshit so her music isn't as meaningful to me as it once was. And Lauryn did a lot of this to herself she is just as brainwashed as anyone else she claims is in the industry.

I agree with this but how does this make her homophobic? Does that mean we should say she stole a million dollars too? lol

That was a mistake in the lyrics and i read this messy lyrics and saw he is talking about gurus or some crap lol but as hardcore as she is into religion I wouldn't be surprised if she was homophobic.

There are a lot of people feeling sick over this new gay-friendly society, and eventually those feelings will have to be worked out, because time never goes backwards.

You can't write everyone off, because they need time to adjust and people change. A Tribe Called Quest even recorded a "homophobic" rap in 1990/1 but I doubt they would be feeling the same today. Grand Puba might feel the same, haha.

Lauryn has little to judge lol let's be real. She was fucking Wyclef when he was married, she was fucking Rohem when he was married... Had several kids by him and he never even really have a damn about her and yet she stayed with him despite her "be a strong woman and leave bad men" bullshit. And her "God will pay you back" bullshit and letting her musicians go unpaid. Sorry but Lauryn and her music seem like bullshit nowadays the meanings and everything behind them. With the shit she has done and she is trying to judge others harshly? Pssssh hahahahahahah. Suddenly Wyclef and Praswells claims don't seem to be so crazy. [Edited 5/29/13 9:32am]

No, No! shake All that gibble-gabble in the Bible about adultry and fornication doesn't count anymore. Didn't you know that??? lol

There have been indicators with regards to some lyrics in the past. I remember really digging Ms. Hill and I even dug the second album even though it got no love at the time.

But in the lyrics for Adam Lives in theory:

Eve was so naive, blinded by the pride and greed
Wanting to be intellectual
Drifting from the way she got turned down one day
And now she thinks that she's bisexual

I don't want it to seem that this quotation is it to be isolated out of context. Within the context of the song, the women's actions and the eventual impact of the actions are shown in a negative light.

Would it really surprise me if Hill was "homophobic""?

Sadly it wouldn't suprise honestly.

As a homosexual myself i don't particulary like it when an artist is straight out homophobic but there have been times when i have just tried to listen to the music and ignore the other bullshit.

But someone hating an entire group of people whether it is blacks, whites, homosexuals etc. Makes it harder to seperate the music VS if they just act like assholes in public.

a good example is one of my favorite bands is W.A.S.P and there was an old interview from the 80s i watched where the singer said they were trying to turn us into a ''homosexual'' nation and how gross gay people were.

It's years later now and i think he has matured and doesn't think that way anymore but still... hearing an artist you like say thing's like that does kind of suck.

I feel you.

It's cool to know that a huge influence on Prince's music, especially songs which are considered hits, were directly influenced or worked on by Wendy & Lisa.

As you can probably guess by my username: I'm a fan.

She is a rasta (but there are differnet types of rastas and that doesnt necessarily mean she is homophobic). Regardless whether she is or not, there are no references to anti homosexuality in the song.

I felt sorry for after her 'husband' 'fiance'? left her, and she cut her dreads off. The last I remember seeing her was on MTV unplugged playing guitar and crying

She's always had that look that could go male or female ...

I hope she isn't a homophobe, because she has the potential to get some important words out there

The lyrics in the song don't convey homophobia to me

I don't understand the part about the drag queens though

Again, consider the references in the "Adam Lives In Theory" mentioned earlier.

Although homosexuality may not be directly be explictely criticized, areas in which there might be overlap which seem criticized.

Can you give examples where you think its indirectly mentioned? I dont see it.

Lauryn Hill to Leave New Jersey Mansion Before heading to Prison

by Jon Wiederhorn

(Photo: Dave Kotinsky)Unless some sort of miracle mitigates her current woes with the IRS, R&B singer Lauryn Hill will be heading to prison for tax evasion by July 8. As frightening and upsetting as that is, at least she won’t have to worry any more about the ugly dispute she was in with the landlords of her New Jersey mansion.

Last month, the landlords filed an eviction lawsuit against her for failing to pay her March rent. TMZ reported that she settled with them to pay $7,000 in rent and leave the property by May 31. At press time, it was unknown whether she had vacated the property.

Hill, 37, plead guilty last year to three counts of tax evasion for not filing tax returns for almost $1.8 million of income between 2005 and 2007.

On May 6 a judge in Newark, New Jersey sentenced her to three months of house arrest and another nine under supervised release.

Before Hill was sentenced, her attorney announced to the press that the singer had paid more than $970,000 of the money she owed the government, and asked the judge to be lenient.

During the hearing Hill made a statement, comparing her predicament to slavery, which probably didn’t help her case.
