i was watching a live open-air gig by bruno mars here in uk yesterday and several times he stops

singing and points the mike at the crowd which seemed to consist of mainly twelve-year old girls,

these girls duly obliged and started singing all the words, this sort of thing makes me cringe its just

so cheesy, it sounds awful, what do you think about crowd singing ? am i right to condemn it or am

i just getting too old for this stuff ?

It is usual, btw Prince used to do the same shit over n over, like back in the Half Time show when he went to the crowd and sang "Go go go go go" and they sang with him... cuz for the "cheesy" thing... i don't get it tbh.

+ Plus Bruno at 3:11 was supposed to take a break, then sing the last verse as usual, but only god knows why the crowd sang the verse beautifully and emotionally... maybe because the song is great and perfect enough to memorize its veres.. He didn't expect that, we even didn't expect that.

I have a feeling this thread will be as worst as any other thread that people enter to in order to hate Bruno.. i hope it ain't one.

It's okay if used wisely. Unfortunately, most artists over use the the crowd singing.

Prince having the crowd singing "their" part in Purple Rain works, or the DMSR (musicology tour) participation part works. ONA Nothing Compares 2 U ruins the flow of the song for me.

I love when the crowd sings.

Depends--am I singing? Then I like it. Sometimes it's fun to be part of a group all doing the same thing, and if a singer can time it right, turning things over to the audience to do a simple fun bit of a song, sure. Cool.

Is somebody near me really, really, really bad and loud? Then I don't like it, and he should shut up, and if that means everybody else has to shut up, fine. Tell the guy up on stage to stop pointing the mic at us.

Am I listening to one of those recordings made from within the audience and circulated through slightly secret channels? Then I hate it, and I wish everybody would shut up.

HATE it-especially when performers purposely avoid the tougher notes in songs by letting the crowd sing it. I want to see singers singing their songs live, not having them do a sing-along with the crowd.

I can dig on this sometimes. But I admit that I prefer the way it sounds when we are at least on chord.

I loved the Prince acoustic set where he gives the audience some of the song. Like Rufus's "Sweet Thing."

I also loved his response to some of the pitchiness of the crowd when they were giving the responses during "Cream."

The audience says the line, he strums the first chord to go into the next line, stops, leans back, grimaces and lets out a groan. LOVES IT!

I hate it. I'm not paying YOU so I can sing.

That's how call and response works. If I want to listen to the album, I'll listen to the album

I don't want to hear the crowd sing and usually they sing badly. I'm going to listen to an album either but the person singing the song live and that person alone.

I have no way of knowing an artist is going to do such a thing, most of them don't. Ruins my Prince bootlegs to hear the audience singing.

But, if I knew an artist was going to do so, I probably would stay at home.

I guess it depends on the concert. When I saw Radiohead, they played "Creep" even though they really didn't want to and Thom Yorke basically had the crowd sing most of it while miming looking at his watch. It was pretty funny actually!

I don't go to concerts to "honor" these performers I'm paying their @$$es to perform for me. Why does the crowd need to participate? People can dance and stuff but leave the singing to the people on stage, I say. I think if people feel they need to participate in order to get into a show, they're the ones who need to stay home

Yeah! Both of that. People who get annoyed by crowd singing really have no business attending concerts.

Yeah, when I saw Ugly Kid Joe 17 years ago, when it came time for "Everything about you", Whitfield asked a guy in the front row whether he can sing, pulled him up on stage, handed him the mic and left the stage. So the guy from the front row sang the complete song. And he didn't sing it too bad.

Later when we asked Whit why he didn't sing the song he said that he just can't stand it anymore.

I saw Chicago a few summers ago and for my favorite Chicago song, they pulled some really drunk woman from them audience who did not know how to sing, could not stay on the beat and .......was drunk. Sorry that I couldn't enjoy that.

I dont mind it... but not through the ENTIRE song. Mary J did that and she did it during my all time favorite song by her. She did not sing one verse or word in the song
