Kelly Rowland Reveals Her "Dirty Laundry"

Kelly Rowland gets confessional with 'Dirty Laundry'

Kelly Rowland

Kelly Rowland’s solo career has never been able to escape that of Beyoncé.

Since her 2002 solo debut, Rowland has stood in the shadow of her Destiny’s Child sister. It's almost impossible to find an interview with the singer without a mention of her more successful pal.

For her part, Rowland has always taken the constant comparisons and never-ending questions about a Destiny Child’s reunion or Bey’s success like any best friend would -- with a smile and a soundbite. Now, she's finally opening up about how it's affected her in a stunningly candid new single, “Dirty Laundry,” taken from her upcoming fourth album, “Talk a Good Game.”

Produced by The-Dream, Rowland’s intensely personal single has the singer facing her resentment over her post-Destiny’s Child career -- and revealing that as she stood in the shadows, she was also being physically abused.

"When my sister was onstage / killing it like a … / I was enraged / feeling it like a ….,” she sings. “Went our separate ways but I was happy that she was killing it / Bittersweet, she was up and I was down / No lie, I feel good for her but what do I do now?"

Led by piano, the R&B jam spools into a dark confessional with Rowland singing about an ex who was “putting his hands on me” and cautioning to listeners that “y'all don’t know the half of this industry.

"Hitting the window like it was me / And still it shattered / He pulled me out and said, 'Don’t nobody love you but me / Not your mama / Not your daddy / and especially not Bey.' "

“Dirty Laundry” continues to show Rowland channeling the confidence she found with her last album, 2011's “Here I Am.” After beefing up her profile with dance tracks such as “When Love Takes Over” and “Commander,” Rowland slid into more sensual, grittier R&B terrain on the album with steamy cuts such as “Motivation.”

As she’s shown on recent singles, Rowland is continuing her quest to step out of the shadows. Hopefully, now that she’s cleaned out her closets, more people will be ready to listen and accept Rowland -- on her own.

We’d post “Dirty Laundry,” but all the lyrics aren’t safe for work. Check out the track here.

“Talk a Good Game” is scheduled to hit stores June 18.

it's understandable lol I mean it had to be tough for her to not have the same kind of success Beyonce has had. Kelly has had minor hits here and there but she's not the icon Beyonce has become.

Terrible to hear she is an abuse survivor. Hope she's in a better place now and that statements like this give listeners going through similar crises some degree of comfort and the inspiration to safely leave their situations.

Identity

Heretofore her singles have been overburdened by wearisome sexualized clichés.

I have zero excitement for her next album.

Kellys main problem is she tries to hard to be like Beyonce instead of just being "Kelly". Unfornately that is going to be the result of her career demise if she doesnt change her formula quick. I hope she does because Ive always liked her. Maybe with this album she might bring something different

I always laugh when people say that Kelly is in Beyonce shadow (like its KELLYs fault) because

Kelly has NEVER had the same marketing, INSIDER freebee's aka Matthew Knowles and spotlight as Beyonce EVEN in DC aka Beyonce's child's lol . It has ALWAYS been like this.

So I think its foolish of her to compare herself to Beyonce who has always had those unfair advantages behind her which is why she has been successful not necessarily because her material is better or talent because quite frankly she doesnt deserve 90 percent of her success.

Kelly would be just fine if she search to find her own sound and personality instead of trying to be something that she is not just to sell records. I think the material she did back in 02 was more creative and interesting and I think her short hair styles fit her personality more.

These sob career stories from artists like her are pathetic. Fame and awards are not everything if your music is shit. If your a real artist then go in there and create! Who cares if you dont win any grammys at least you have your artistic integrity to stand by. This generation doesnt care about that and just cares about titles with out putting in the effort it takes to earn them. I respect her feelings and admire her honesty but just saying.

The days of music icons and legends ARE OVER..Yall need to stop drinking the Kool laid,. Im also happy she is at a better place with her relationships, no woman should ever have to be treated like that.

Can't imagine you would interpret this any other way, coming from Kelly Rowland.

Thats not bashing Beyonce. She actually gives her props throughout the song and just questions where does she go outside of DC. Thats what I got from it.

I dont see how anybody could get she is bashing Beyonce when she is clearly giving her props more than what I would have...

I think she is just saying what is on her mind, she has to be tired of hearing "you arent as big as her" especially here on this forum, Kelly should just do what she wants, but like everything else its a business, and she isnt exactly Bob Dylan or John Mellencamp, she cant start her own label and say fuck the radio, she is used to or has always been in the "light" had she not been, then she could do what she wants, she could be Tweet or Teedra Moses or Ameriie and people would give her credit for doing her own thing, but instead she isnt in that position, but i dont think she is bashing Beyonce because like B or not, WE would not even know Kelly had it not been for Beyonce.

I kind of compare this to what Julian Lennon faced for eons, constant "u sound just like your dad" or everything you do has got to be "on par with the Beatles Success" but difference is that Julian can write record, has his own label and doesnt really give a shit anymore and is comfortable doing his thing, releasing records when he wants, Kelly cant do that.

That is not true. Its actually the other way around.

If Beyonce had came out in the 90s as a solo artist she would not have had the same success. She has DC aka La Toya, La Tavia, Kelly and so forth to thank for her success ESPECIALLY Kelly who stuck by her despite her and her fathers foolishness. IF he had not been for DC there would not even have been a "solo Beyonce"

(I do love Kelly she has always been my fav) I just wish she grow a background and stop kissing Beyonce ass (which people kind of egg her on to do in these interviews) and just do her own thing (and be happy with that). She is her own artist outside of DC and Beyonce. The only way people are going to take her seriously is if she starts taking herself seriously with her music and stop following trends and copying Beyonce just to be relevant

There are plenty of superstars that became big in their own right despite a bandmember or sibling being more popular such as Janet Jackson for example. Despite all that Janet has achieve she still gets asked about Michael but people take her seriously as a "artist" because she made it clear that her and her brother were two different products/artists. I think Kelly needs to do the same.

I think with this record she might be going towards that direction. I wish she go back to the short hair look as well. I wonder who is managing her now. It was Matthew Knowles for a majority of her early career neutral
