The closest thing to the Beatles in terms of creativity and quality IMO. Might have to bust out Oranges & Lemons right now..

Darn it! I thought there was some new music about to be released!

Maybe it is a good thing that they stopped when they did? Their catalogue is very consistent, they arguably became better with time which happens fairly rarely.

I would consider The Kinks as the closest to the Beatles. The Kinks, also a very British pop band, like XTC. I love this kind of British groups, they always write the best pop tunes and their lyrics are smart and sophisticated.

shrug Eh, controlling for the fact it's Christgau, I don't think his overview is particularly negative... or off. (Except in the case of Nonsuch, which is bloody brilliant. talk to the hand )

As he might note, albeit with all sorts of curmudgeony qualifications, XTC's discography is generally solid, even as it might sometimes lean toward too self-aware. With just a few exceptions, the boys consistently churned out work that a casual listener could dig and a fan could really dig.

I love that band. Its a crime that they won't reform and release new music.

Those guys have so much talent that i think they still have some interesting musical ideals in em. Especially Andy partridge.

If no XTC reformation is in the works i guess i gotta check out Andy's recent, collaborative stuff.

Rest in Peace Bettie Boo. See u soon.

Dear God was so formative for me - one of the first times I realized great weird music could be also be catchy (and vice versa)

I sort of agree with Xgau on the later stuff, but I should give a another listen.

Man, I miss those Guys!!!

English Settlement, Skylarking, and Oranges and Lemons are my favorites...but I'd probably have to take Black Sea and The Big Express along, too....

By the way, I read several months ago about a future reissue of XTC's albums, following the remasters of the records they made as the Dukes of Stratosphere. Since then, I think we've only seen the reissue of Skylarking in vinyl and with a different cover. Does some of you now anything about the reissue of the other albums?

When I landed in L.A. in 1980, I had to take a crash course in what this "New Wave" thing was all about.
Forced fed myself a daily dose of KROQ for a few months. Usually quite boring.

Then I heard this one day...

...Generals and Majors

Fan ever since.

Especially enjoy the growth and progression album to album.

hmmm I should probably use I Am The Audience as my theme song.

Thanks. Yeah, there was news about these remasters coming from Andy himself, but no talk has followed. Let's hope they do it soon!

tA posted on my music thread! woot! I feel like such a big boy!

"Generals and Majors" is definitely a standard, and if my copy of Wasp Star were vinyl, I'm certain "Playground' would be worn to the point of transparency. lol
