The new Daft Punk album: yay or nay?

It is out now, I had a quick listen yesterday but my first impression wasn't that great. A lot of it sounds like midtempo MOR/easy listening stuff, like crossing Air with Doobie Brothers.

Not the exciting collection of funky electrodisco club bangers that I had expected, to be honest. It left me lukewarm at best. Maybe I will warm up to it after listening a bit more to it, but I doubt it...

Any thoughts?

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

I've been listening to the first single "Get Lucky" and I like it,but I feel like something is missing....it needs something else to really make it come alive....maybe a louder, funkier bassline? It's cool hearing Niles' guitar again.Makes me long for the days when Chic were in their heyday. Havent' heard the album yet.

Initially, I wanted to dismiss it as just disco throwback, 70s throwback, derivative, unoriginal...etc. But the more I listen to it, the more I like it.

If you give it a few full, uninterrupted listens, it's kind of a cool concept album. Even that 10 minute Moroder track is growing on me. This is art! So "yay."

i think it's pretty good. definately a grower. very different from previous stuff, it's very 1978 sounding. they seem to have turned their back on EDM at least for now and slating it in interviews. it sounds a bit more like the dancey stuff by air

Indeed, when I listened for the second time to the album today I liked it better than yesterday. I was able to listen to the actual music this time, and it wasn't all as bad as I had thought.

Yesterday I was just too busy being disappointed with the fact that (again) it wasn't the dazzling electrofunk/disco/EDM ride that I was hoping for. I'm definately gonna give it some more spins before my final verdict will be made!

Hmmm. Had I never heard this I might not have ever noticed how slight "Get Lucky" sounds.

It's missing what this version has, Life!

I'm flabbergasted - this version beats the original hands down! nuts

Despite this, I'm still holding out to spin the real Randon Access Memories on Monday, just like this:

After listening to entire "Random Access Memories," album several times, I have to say that I'm disappointed. It's boring. It'll work to have in the background, while lounging by the pool, in say Miami, but that's about it. The Giorgio Moroder stuff? well, we've heard it all that before: basically a techno light version of "Chase," from Midnight Express.

And yeah, it needs some Bernard.

I'm also suprised at how mellow this album is from the snippets I heard. Not sure I want to be bothered any more. confused Sounds like diet disco.

I haven't heard the whole album yet, but I really like the songs I've heard on here so far. I like the more mellow laid back side of electronic music. I find the harder more banging typical club stuff kind of dull. Really loving the funky 70's disco thing and how they integrate guitars into what they do.

Because he can't sing.

All in all, I'd call this album pretty lame. To be honest, in my ears, most songs suck. smile "Instant Crush" must be the worst of the worst. Lite disco, indeed. I'm guessing Nile Rodgers plays on most tracks...that "funky" Chic style really dates whatever it's on (and I love the guy & Chic).

"The Game Of Love" kind of reminds me of late 70's Herbie Hancock vocoder stuff, which isn't a bad thing.

I like the simplicity of "Doin' It Right".

That's about it.

Haven't listened to it all the way through but I have enjoyed what I have heard.

Here's a thoughtful article prompted by the release:

It doesn't sound like Daft Punk were digging their own material. It's stuck in neutral. No grooves, no catchy melodies, no innovation. It's just kinda slow and depressing pop music. The songs just run in circles for a while and end.

I've only got round to listening once to the whole thing so far, but I liked what I heard, especially "Get Lucky" and "Give Life Back to Music"... so yay.

I honestly started to get into DP this year, I liked songs here and there before but never followed them so not really concerned with how much they changed or didn't change. I love Discovery though and I liked the songs I heard from this one so I'll buy it tomorrow.

Honestly, I think this could be one of the best releases I've heard in years. It's exceptionally well crafted and the production is amazing. I kinda liked Daft Punk before, but not overly so. This new (old) sound is perfect to me. It's got massive depth and quality. Gorgio by Moroder is fantastic.

Nice mature sound. I expect it will appeal to an older group of listeners. Saying that, my 15 year old nephew loves it! cool

There are some good songs on this album.I just wish there were a few more uptempo tracks.Too many of these songs are midtempo. When you got Nile Rodgers onboard,it's time to funk it up! lol Still,I like most of what i heard.I'll be picking up a copy today.

He's only on three of the 13 tracks... there's the big problem, right there. lol I'll be sure to add this album to my Nile/Chic collection, though.

I give it a 7 out of 10.

MAJOR step above Human After All..which was bland, thoughtless and void of structure.

I think that they were experimenting too much on some mid-tempo tracks and should hve thrown in more uptempo cuts., which made Discovery work even in comparison to Homework, which was good but not balanced.

Give Your Life To Music

Lose Yourself To Dance

Get Lucky

Doin It Right (which is the closest track they have to they signature style)

Are good strong tracks, not only because they are uptempo and funky but moreso caters to the fans style.

I really appreciated

Giorgio by Moroder as well, I was not expecting to hear something like that.

Touch was really nice and experiemental

The rest of the tracks just didnt hit me as much, or I could take or leave them.

Instant Crush, did not like the vocals and song structure much

Within I thought was kinda boring

Game Of Love I thought was a bit boring as well

Beyond / Motherboard...I can't remember

^^those tracks I think brought down the albums mood, I could have done without. But the good outweighed the bad imo.

Contact had a nice ending

Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.
