RIAA Adds Music Streaming to Count Towards ‘Gold’ & ‘Platinum Awards’

RIAA Adds Music Streaming to Count Towards ‘Gold’ & ‘Platinum Awards’, Frank Ocean,Michael Jackson,Usher, Rihanna & More to Receive New Certifications

Gold-and-Platinum-Records

In an attempt to reflect today’s ever changing music industry climate, the RIAA has announced that music streaming will now count towards an artist’s ‘Gold’ or ‘Platinum’ status.

“Including music streaming in Gold & Platinum awards marks the continued evolution of the industry’s premier program for recognizing artistic achievement, and it reflects the wide spectrum of ways consumers enjoy music from their favorite bands,” said Cary Sherman, Chairman & CEO, RIAA. “The music business, along with its incredible array of digital service partners, is offering fans more access to music than ever before. We’re thrilled that our awards will now more fully recognize artists’ commercial success today.”

With the changes, on-demand audio and/or video song streams (Spotify, Pandora, Rdio, etc) will now be counted towards the 500,000 (Gold), 1,000,000 (Platinum) and 2,000,000 plus (multi-Platinum) thresholds required for G&P’s Digital Single Award certification.

This means a ton of your favorite artists will be receiving new certifications, including Frank Ocean, Rihanna,Whitney Houston,Usher Michael Jackson his protege Justin Timberlake Emeli Sandé, Jason DeRulo just to name a few & others.

You can check out the full press release here. How do you feel about the changes?

so like everytime someone goes to sample a song it counts towards there sales awards?

And just a few months ago youtube counts towards the billboard hot 100.

It sounds to me the industry is desperate to get peoples numbers up so they do these thing's... that's how i see it.

What's next everytime you watch a youtube ad and the song comes up it goes towards it's sales to?? lol

With the illumination of record stores not many are buying physical copies anymore. More & more are opting to listen through digital formats. I think its a good idea! Times have changed & it needed to be updated & included in the sales. Artist were losing a lot of sales the old way.

It makes sense.

Face it. Record sales are a thing of the past. They have to adjust to them generation. Pretty soon phycial copies of albums/CDs will no longer be sold in stores.

Think about it, when's the last time u popped in a CD while u were riding in the car that wasn't a mixed one? Most people use sirius, Pandora or plug their iPod in and play it through the speakers.

I don't think they will ever be extinct. No matter how they try to tell us, cds and LPs DO sell.

It says 100 streams = 1 digital download

Identity

I looked at the digital cover of a new single the other day several times. That should be the equivalent of 500 downloads. lol I think the new rule is laughable and bespeaks the desperation in the music industry.

So Justin Bieber has a certification for 12x platinum for a song that only sold 3 million. Why digital sales and streaming are being counted as one is beyond me, especially considering the inclusion of free services (i.e. YouTube). Streaming should be a separate certification.

I agree "streaming" should be something totally different. Cause you know someone is going to be stupid and start saying "yeah my album is 20x platnum" when it actually sold 150,000 physically. TO me this is the RIAA giving themselves something to do, since its a rarity for someone to even sell 500,000 now, the RIAA doesnt even do anything anymore. But streaming and "thinking" about a record should never even be called a "sale" that is BS. If anything the RIAA should get real and adjust its certification amounts with sales since the industry is down about 80% since 2000 they possibly should cut those certifications in half possibly gold is 250,000 now and platnum is 500,000 get with reality
