Aretha Franklin on auto tune

Q. There’s a big trend these days to use auto-tuned vocals. What do you think about that?

AF. The what?

Q. Auto-tuned vocals — it’s a way to digitally correct pitch.

AF. I’ve never heard of that! I’ve never even heard of that.

LOL! She'd probably fall off her chair if she heard HALF of these so-called "artists" or "vocalists" TODAY! It's all CRAP! If you're TRULY a good singer, you don't NEED 2 correct your "pitch," Rihanna, Ciara, etc...

Don't even get me started on this today. smile

hold on right there confused

it was used as a (then cool/trendy) effect to embellish the vocals in certain areas of the song

auto-tune during the 99-02 era was nothing more than a (now dated/cheesy) effect

but nowadays it's used to produce people who CAN'T sing, BIG difference

and Believe is still a hell of a pop classic

When Cher used it, it was another way of making noise. When everyone else started doing it, it only exposed them for not being talented enough.

But anyway, I doubt Ree would've fucked with it anyways if she knew what it was.

She did but for her it was just a cool effect. Cher likes to try different things, and we all know what her voice is like so I wasn't mad at her for that. Unfortunately, this gave the greenlight to the careers of the non-singers like Spears, Rihanna etc who use auto-tune in just about every damn song disbelief

Whatever Cher. lol

CORRECTION: Cher never used auto-tunes. Her vocal track on Believe were processed with a vocoder. And as we all know, vocaders & talkboxes are definitely old-school. wink

Hmm... apparently, the vocoder story was debunked. The "Cher effect" was allegedly used by Antares Autotune. Cher was really the reason that vocal effect stayed on "Believe". When Warner Bros told her they didn't want it on the song, she reportedly yelled "over my dead body!"

Everytime I hear that "Believe" song, I think of the Buffy the Vampire episode when Buffy when off to college and her dorm mate kept playing that song over and over again. It irritated the hell out of Buffy. The chick turned out to be a demon and Buffy had to kill her. I can't remember exactly what Buffy said but it was something like she deserved it for playing that song.lol
