David Bowie's New Video For "The Next Day" (Explicit)
In the clip, Bowie stands on stage performing for a number of characters that include a violent priest (played with studious pathos by Gary Oldman) and a stigmata-afflicted showgirl (Oscar winner Marion Cotillard).
Bowie plays up the Jesus imagery present in the song’s lyrics — the chorus includes a line about his “body left to rot in a hollow tree” — and in the end thanks everybody for his own professional resurrection.
I haven't seen it yet, but it seems to me that he's trying to get some promotion here with a small "scandal". He surely needs it, not doing interviews, live shows and not publishing the really commercial songs on the album as singles ("Valentine's Day" anyone?).
I like Bowie's new album a lot, but I confess I expected something different when I first heard about his comeback and I listened to the superb "Where Are We Now?". In the end, he's made a record very similar to the last two, whereas I expected that, after the ten-year "retirement", he would take us to a different place this time, both lyrically and musically.
Apparently when it was first posted, YouTube had it removed because of religion issues and then reinstated it to Vevo?
That's what I've read. ISO, Bowie's managing, made the statement that the video had been removed from Youtube but that it could be seen in other places, particularly in Vevo. It seems to be a marketing strategy.
I can't believe that this song has been chosen as a single. But that's just me, I know some orgers said in a previous thread that this was a potential single. I don't see it like that. The melody is weak to my ears, there are catchier songs in the album.

Agreed. Im waiting for " How Does the Grass Grow", and like you said earlier "Valentines Day". Aside from "Where Are we Now" they are the strongest cuts on the album.

Although the song has that "Heroes" background, the agressive chorus reminds me more of a Tin Machine song, which can't be very good. It's not a bad song, but, in my opinion, it's not among the best on the album, and certainly not among the most accessible and commercial.

Anyway, I don't see much controversy in a video with violence and "sex and the church". That's political correctness now.
Uh...does no one see the humor of the video...
It may have some humour! Actually, I haven't seen it yet, I'm at work and I can't listen to it, so I prefer to wait to the weekend...
What I mean is: if he looked for some controversy, issues concerning sex and the church don't seem too controversial for me these days. But it may be a good and even funny video!
