TV1 Divas Special: Top 10 R&B Divas of all time(No Gladys) TV One is branding the month of April "Destination Divas" and will pack the network's schedule with a mix of new original specials, iconic movies and sitcoms, plus encores of R&B Divas season one.
SATURDAY, APRIL 27, 9PM/ET:
I understand they wanted to add some Divas in Training to the special, but you can't have a List like that and not mention Ms. Gladys Knight...For shame TV1, for shame....Does Rihanna consider herself an R&B singer? She gets LITTLE play on R&B stations in my city but not much..She's mainly on the Pop-Rock stations here...

What a joke
TV One should be ashamed of themselves.
A top 10 Diva list and no Tina Turner?
But they would put that overrated carbon copy Tina Turner wannabe on there but no the REAL thing
How are you gonna have Patti Labelle but NO Gladys Knight
Beyonce and Rihanna dont even make R&B music
they look out of place on the list, they dont belong on the list.
Whatever I dont care, wont be watching

I never thought of her as a 'diva' I alway put her in the same class as Sade & Nancy Wilson
I don't think people like Rhianna & Beyonce should be classified as Divas, nor Janet Jackson
...what the hell is a Diva?

@ this list. | |

After all these years, I'm fucking confused myself...lol

janet is probably the least 'diva' of anybody on that list

The same thing could be said about Whitney but thats besides the point. She made R&B for an extended period of time that helped popularized a sound during her era. She has enough R&B songs in her catalogue that made an impact to be categorize as such.
I just simply argued she has the merits to be mentioned more so than Beyonce and Rihanna
I cant believe you are honestly trying to argue this?
In a nut shell Tina and Gladys deserve to be on a list such as this more than Beyonce and Rihanna, period.

I agree
The meaning is used for a female singer who is overbearing, difficult to work with and who has attitude problems. Most of the times I think when they make lists such as this they are referring to female singers who they think are icons.

You have to remember when Tina started doing her thing, R&B was a different animal. I mean 1960 R&B was far different from the R&B that came after she switched to pop rock.

^I agree 100% but it was still a form of R&B though.
I guess my issue is not so much with the genre Tina did but with the fact that there are more deserving R&B Icons that have made an impact on the genre that deserve to be listed instead of B and R.
The fact that they would place B and R OVER Tina Turner is appauling, baffling, and disrespectful
After Aretha Franklin, the second Diva/legend in her category that I think of is Tina Turner.... and thats just automatic

They're just going to list acts who are really well known to the mainstream and had some level of Top 40 success or more pop oriented (Whitney). It's never going to be people like Ann Peebles, Denise LaSalle, Carla Thomas, Betty Wright, Koko Taylor, Marlena Shaw, Betty Lavette, Millie Jackson, Thelma Houston, etc. Just because they're less well known doesn't make them less R&B, but those acts won't get the ratings and TV is a business. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

The Industry crowned Tina "The Queen of Rock n Roll" a long time ago. I wouldnt expect Tina to make any list of Great Female R&B Singers. I don't think she made Ebony's list when they did a cover story featuring R&B greats..
Rihanna should have been left off and Gladys should be on there...But they wanted a diverse collection and Rihanna is a cross-over success...
All the other women should be listed, especially Janet & MiMi....They chose 10 of the most Celebrated Women In R&B..
This is a TOP Influential Divas Special Folks, not an "Unsung" special..

So BESIDES Tina & Gladys what other DESERVING icon(s) should TV1 have gone with other than the 10 they chose?
There's a lot of GREAT sanging women still doing their thing but they're simply not Mainstream...The list TV1 chose is about as accurate as you get minus the Gladys exclusion...
I just find it STRANGE than a couple of you are saying the 10 women they chose are a JOKE, but what other Black Female vocalists are more celebrated than the ones TV1 is featuring?

Gladys was never considered a Diva. Diva is associated with being a prima dona. I don't think I've ever heard anyone use her name and the word "diva" in the same sentence.
As far as Tina, she definately deserved to be on the list more than Beyonce and Rhianna because she is more R&B/Soul than they are. But, again, I don't think Tina is really associated with being a Diva. Plus, black media hasn't given her any respect in ages so I'm not surprised she wasn't included.
Diane, Chaka, Patti, Aretha, Mimi and Whitney are all notorious for their "Diva" behavior. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

Micheal was crowned "The King Of POP" also but you better believe no one is going to ever exclude him off of any lists when it comes to male R&B singers. Tina was cranking out Soul/R&B looooong before she became associated with Rock music. For whatever reason, we especially here in America, tend to write-off all of the material she recorded with Ike, which far out-numbers her solo recordings. And that stuff she was doing with Ike was some of the greatest Soul singing to ever be put on wax. Even as a solo artist, it's R&B that revived her career in the 80s, not Rock. Gladys might not be known as a diva (she's just not that type of person) but she should be on this list anyways, because she's very influential and so incredibly underrated... When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace -Jimi Hendrix

Gladys is more than a "diva". She's a vocal genius.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
No it's just another list to add to a bunch of lists of people that personally picked them.

I dont have an issue with anybody else besides Beyonce and Rihanna. There inclusion makes the list a joke because they could have included Tina or Gladys who had very successful mainstream careers as well and whom are far influential and legendary than Beyoncen and Rihana but that goes without saying

... I wonder why she's so underrated? It seems like she never got the respect she should have, I hope she gets it before she dies... When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace -Jimi Hendrix

Tina Turner is more known for pop/rock than R&B. Compare her ticket sales to Diana, Patti, or Aretha. Yes she sings with soul but those stadiums are full of white people.

I was never a big Glady's fan, I liked a lot of songs, but I never bought an album etc
I'm like that with a lot of entertainers/artists anyway, I may buy songs etc
I saw her a few years ago and she had 1 of the Pips join her show and I understand why she is an real 'entertainer'
I heard songs I didn't even realize where Gladys Night/Gladys Night & the Pips

lol I think most people are, and don't know it
I remember that whole Divas musical special, they had any woman that could sing/was an entertainer etc
Maybe by then diva was watered down
I did think having some kind of 'big' attitude(good or bad) or character had something to do with it, but didn't pay much attention
At times I thought it had something to do with a style of singing. And is Diva just a think applied to any woman with any Black ancestry?
Couldn't Christina Aguilera be a diva? Wasn't/Isn't Cher a 'diva'?

Fixed that for you. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

any current list is gonna include beyonce and most likely rhianna to, so deal with it. fact is there are not any black female singers you can name thats not on this list who has had bigger careers than those 2 besides whitney (rip).

This doesn't say anything about "black" singers, but R&B singers. There's a difference, you can be black and not sing R&B (Kathleen Battle, Charlie Pride) or do R&B and not be black (Roy Head, Average White Band). You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
