If Jimi, Janis & Jim Had Lived

Now i am sure there have been MANY threads about this on the internet but i really wanna know...

Where would this trio be the legacy of the 80's and 90's? no matter what they would be legends but how much longer would they be big? would they go on and have his in the 80's?

I see it this way...

Jimi could go one of 2 ways... he would keep making great records and have a few more hits in the 70's then become a more BB King type who releases records that aren't exactly huge but each one sells no matter what.

OR he could have had a Clapton like career where he adjusted many different sounds into his work and had hits in the 80's and 90's.. hell he might have stolen half of Clapton's career lol i see it going down more that way.

Janis would have made other great records in the 70's but once the 80's hit i would see either of these happening.
She refuses to adjust to the time period and goes on making her bluesy rock which by the time the 80's hit wasn't really as big chart wise & she wouldn't be making more hits but would still have lots of fans.

Or she goes a Rod Stewart, Joni Mitchell route and become Adult Contemporary material and crossover every once in awhile.

The Doors i see would stay together till at least the mid 70's but Jim was dying to go solo and i would see him doing some solo records and getting a few hits here and there.

But i would imagine he would make strange non-mainstream records and would have very mixed feelings on each release.

But that is just how i see it! what does everyone else think?

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Jimi was on his way to do some really creative stuff. He probably would've gone into a more funk rock/blues blend during the '70s.

Jim... I don't know. I think his fate was sealed in some way. I think even he predicted he probably wouldn't live into his thirties.

Janis would've gotten her acclaim as one of the greatest soul singers of all time.

Jimi would have matured and cleaned up his Drug and Managerial issues over time and would have been recognised as one of the founding fathers of the 70s funk movement.. I see him doing some amazing things musically that would have kept expanding what blues, soul and rock guitar was capable of doing.

Jim would have died eventually or just went crazy with his drinking/drug issues.

Janis possibly could have gotten herself together and kicked the heroin and drinking and possibly could have made some great records for another few decades.

As far as the trio goes, I don't think Morrison would have "potentially" made it out of the druggie/alcohol madness... Just my two cents.

Not necessarily... Remember Marvin had a hit record before he died... And other sixties/seventies artists sucessfully made the transition during the 80s. Tina Turner, for one...

True, they had hits (as did Lennon, Clapton, McCartney, Harrison, and the Stones) but the 80s was rough for all of them, too. The hairspray and slick production just didn't suit them IMO.

Maybe Tina Turner's stuff somehow managed to stand on its own, even if it was not the best stuff she ever did.

I am a pretty big Hendrix fan but i think eventually he would have started to release less impressive records. It happens with everyone. There were many FANTASTIC tracks from Jimi during his lifetime but the tracks released after his death seem less impressive. (with the exceptions of gems like "Freedom", "Ezy Ryder" and "Angel") I realise that the work was incomplete but i feel he would have run out of ideas when it comes to rock music.

Jim - The Doors would have broken up and he would have had a few solo hits before fading out of public eye or dying from a drug overdose

Jimi - Definetly feel like he was planning on making a funk, rock, soul, and blues mashup

Janis - I don't know why but I've always felt like she would have gone on to country or glam rock

Basically, all of these artists could have had some hits in the 80s, but like most people who outlived them, it probably wouldn't have been the best of their music, as NDRU pointed out.

Oddly enough had Elvis lived, I would think 80's music would suit him fine.

But I agree with Timmy on the three.

Hey, this is fun! Jimi surely would have flirted with jazz and that cooperation with Miles would have happened. The two would have had an ego clash but Jimi would have made some instrumental fusion records, lose all his fans and decide to go back to his roots and hook up with George Clinton . Imagine that: Funkadelic with Jimi on guitar. He would leave him too, do an Experience reunion for the money and, it being the 80s by now, lose himself in studio gadgetry so much that he'd forget to play guitar, decide to go back to his roots again and finally end up leading a blues band.
The other two... I never really thought of Janis as all that special. Probably a few more blues albums...
Jim Morrison just may have ended up as a poet

Here is another thought: would there still be room for Prince if Jimi hadn't died and Sly had kept his mind together? hmmm

I suspect Prince would have been less popular in the '80s especially and seen as more of a Jimi/ Sly imitator, kind of like Lenny Kravitz is seen today lol .Mind you, I also think that the young Prince would have been intelligent enough to adjust his sound and style so that he made still made some sort of individual impact in his own right.

i don't think so. Sly and Jimi weren't known for drum machines. The Minneapolis sound is unique and while it was influenced by several artists, its very much a Prince sound.

I would, however, have loved to see Hendrix jam with SRV. That would have been fun.

Wow, good question...I know one thing, Janis was a badass singer. Love the raw, hoarse voice, because when she sang, all her emotions were put into her songs. One of a kind that can never be duplicated. Jimi, well he was just a badass musician period, gone too soon.

Jimi - might have went way further out into instrumental music. He had so much promise when he passed, seemed like he was just getting started. Probably would have gone into stuff that didn't sound like rock. But might have gone the Clapton route & spent the last 40 years making records for the people that liked the early ones. Would have had one or two overproduced hits in the 80s then done a back to the roots LP with Rick Rubin that was said to be "his best work in years".

Janis - Would have gone gradually more commercial in the early 70s until she resembled Bette Midler, and gradually fallen out of favor with rock fans. Then would have made a comeback singing on Moby records in the late 90s and had her own return to form album produced by Jack White.

Jim - By 1978 the Doors would have released three poorly received albums in a row and found themselves on the State Fair circuit alongside the Grass Roots and Spirit. Jim's attempts to "go punk" with the new band Mute Nostril Agony would not be a big success. But Morrison would find a new career in the 2000s as the author of vampire-themed Young Adult literature.

Jimi would do a duets album with Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Big Boi, Kanye, he would do Purple Rain and Prince would complain in an interview.

Janis would sell an energy drink, have a line of hippie sandals from Old Navy.

Jim would be a right wing talk show host in LA--he would be balding, fat.

All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

Jim, from what I recall, was actually ready to leave the music industry because he didn't like the shadiness. He wanted to be a poet and music industry execs at his Elektra label (and some Doors members) thought he was nuts for thinking he could have a career as a poet. They did release a record with Jim reciting poetry (American Prayer posthumously) but I don't think they would've released it had he been alive. The Doors seemed doomed to break up anyway. They were burning out though musically they were actually at their best near the end (L.A. Woman is a great album).

I'm not sure about that- ? I'm a Hendrix fanatic &

I haven't ever heard any Synths on a Hendrix track before so i'll assume the answer is no.

But in every other aspect of Production Jimi was ahead of the pack! He was doing everything that George Martin and the Beetles were doing and Beyond!

Janis - the music industry is about image. Drugs, would have aged her bad.
