When Doves Cry sampled on new track by Phoenix? Does Prince know Phoenix sampled "When Doves Cry," on their song "The Real Thing," from their new album,"Bankrupt?" The download does not come with a booklet so I don't know if it's credited. Prince is gonna go ballistic if he didn't get paid. Phoenix is a fairly big band, so if it's a sample then I'm sure they've cleared it. However, Prince does not have the "copyright" to the detuned rimshot sound on the Linndrum if it's just a sound from the unit itself. They've obviously tried to make a reference to Prince's music with its use, but if no recordings by Prince were sampled then there's no need to clear any samples.

Yeah, I don't have the album itself, but just checked out the track after seeing this thread.

Sounds like Linn samples but not exactly a Doves Cry sample. I don't think they'll have any problems. JT didn't have a problem with Until The End Of Time. "That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide." | |

Yeah, I don't either. My husband is the Phoenix fan he pointed out the linn drum to me. It's funny because he's not a Prince fan and he caught it. He pointed to two other songs that sounded Prince like. One had elements of Erotic City and another elements of Little Red Corvette. My poor hubby...he looked so disappointed in his beloved Phoenix. It was like he lost a battle in our unspoken war of taste in music.
