Sade - Feel no pain

#Classic

Feel No Pain

Mamma been laid off
Pappa been laid off
My brother's been laid off
For more than two years now
Ooh can't get a job
Billy can't get a job
Ooh they gotta listen to the blues
Help them to strive
Help them to move on
Help them to have some future
Help them to live long
Help them to live life
Help them to smile
Don't let them stay home and listen to the blues

Pappa been laid off
Mamma been laid off
Billy can't get a job
For too long too long
Don't let them lose
We gotta give them a chance
It's gonna come back on everyone
If you don't make them dance
Don't let them stay home and listen to the blues

There's nothing sacred (why why why))
breathing hatred
We have to face it (why why why)
No one can take it
And feel no pain

Mamma been laid off
Pappa been laid off
My brother's been laid off
For more than two years now
Ooh can't get a job
Billy can't get a job
Ooh they gotta listen to the blues

Help them to strive
Help them to move on
Help them to have some future
Help them to live long
Help them to live life
Help them to smile
Don't let them stay home and listen to the blues

One day we're gonna wake up
And the ghetto's all around
All over my friend
Have you ever seen a man break down

Do you know how that feels
To walk the streets with your head held high
Why, why, why
Oh Lord, have mercy
Did you ever see a man break down

There's nothing sacred
Breathing hatred
We have to face it
No one can take it (how can they take that much)
And feel no pain

Ooh did you ever see a man break down

Pearls

There is a woman in Somalia
Scraping for pearls on the roadside
There's a force stronger than nature
Keeps her will alive
That's how she's dying
She's dying to survive
Don't know what she's made of
I would like to be that brave
She cries to the heaven above
There is a stone in my heart
She lives a life she didn't choose
And it hurts like brand-new shoes

Hurts like brand-new shoes

There is a woman in somalia
The sun gives her no mercy
The same sky we lay under
Burns her to the bone
Long as afternoon shaddows
It's gonna take her to get home
Each grain carefully wrapped up
Pearls for her little girl

Hallelujah
Hallelujah

She cries to the heaven above
There is a stone in my heart
She lives a life she didn't choose
And it hurts like brand-new shoes

A big criticism is that Sade releases the same album over and over.

But what an album that is!

It's true.

I'm a fan but her catalogue is limited at best. I'd go as far as 2 cal her a one trick pony. All of her material sounds basically the same.

Yeah...sounds just like Sweetest Taboo, right? Maureen? NOT!

She works within the context of the sound she and the band developed. Her subject matter is still diverse.

thumbs up!

I've always liked her more 'socially conscious' material. It's funny, since, in the UK at least, her music was very often pegged - perhaps a little unfairly - as being the slick, 'easy listening' soundtrack to 80s Thatcherite yuppiedom. Even now, when you mention Sade to some people, they'll make some comment about 'wine bars'. I must admit, I do find some of the stuff on the earlier albums a bit insipid, tbh, but this song and others like it are great.

Immigrant from Lovers Rock is a good one in the same vein.

Coming from where he did
He was turned away from every door like Joseph
To even the toughest among us
That would be too much

He didn't know what it was to be black
'Til they gave him his change
But didn't want to touch his hand
To even the toughest among us
That would be too much

Isn't it just enough
How hard it is to live
Isn't it hard enough
Just to make it through a day

The secret of their fear and their suspicion
Standing there looking like an angel
In his brown shoes, his short suit
His white shirt and his cuffs a little frayed

Coming from where he did
He was such a dignified child
To even the toughest among us
That would be too much

I've heard Trevor Nelson say that in the U.K the perception is she did more for wine bars than U.K soul.

Sade & Tracey Thorn are some of the best soul singers anywhere although not synonymous with U.K soul.

I use to have Randy Crawford in that group although I just realised she's not british.

Sade is a fine wine, so maybe its fitting that she is the queen of 'wine bars'

"Feel No Pain" Live during Love Deluxe Tour 1993.

This along with "Bullet Proof Soul" were omitted from the DVD of the tour.
