Exactly, been saying this for years now, MUSIC is a sidedish, a "do you want fries with that meal" where it used to be the meal, now its an afterthought that most dont even care about This is the truth. Music is more like a hobby now. It as to be combined with something else to make enough money out of it. There's a bunch of positive things with new technology and globalization though. More people can spread their music to any part of this world rich or not so wealthy. All you need is a crappy computer, Internet and creativity. My Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/tundrah

the 1984 prince of today? two artists: janelle monae and sufjan stevens.
those are two young artists who are creating exciting, new music. no one knows what their next albums will sound like, because they keep it fresh. just like prince did in 1984. and people are listening.
the michael jackson of today? justin timberlake.
the madonna of today? lady gaga. (unfortunately) [Edited 5/3/13 6:43am]

I love Jack so much since the white stripes days ...but I'd never think of Prince when I think about him...he's more similar to a Bob Dylan or Johhny Cash musically.. I say Janelle Monae I know she is a woman but she reminds me a little of Prince she is unpredictable when she puts material out, very creative , amazing performer, very stilish etc..

I need comfort food now
Yes it is over, it's hard to even describe it in words I can watch a movie tvshow performance or listen to a song and 'feel it' what is missing today
* Everything is too easily accessible now, which in a way would have helped in 1984 as far as knowing what has happening, pix from shows etc but at the same time things and people not being so easily accessible made it more exciting.

These people are very popular, but it doesn't make them superstars of MJ caliber
Just by the fact that they openly have copied MJ's touches says a lot

yes to me of course neither one of them is on MJ's level...for the reason you said and because imo they suck as artists

lol, well by the fact that we know them, and they have been acting and entertaining for over 5 yrs means that can't suck that much. Whether I like them or not, they are getting paid, and people the world over know them * But for the most part M & F entertainers of their genre are mostly the same, in 'rendition'
* I guess Beyonce can say, Prince likes her enough to have had her perform with him, and Tina Turner

What aI find hilarious are folks that have no clue what 'funk' music is, and describe whatever they hear as funk or funky.

They should watch the biography about JB Soul Survivor. That's a good start for beginners i believe. My Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/tundrah

You are so right Today's kids have so many different things to keep them occupied.Alot of them treat music like it's disposable. They go to iTunes and download only the songs they like, instead of the entire album.I feel blessed that I grew up in an era where music was VERY important and respected.
