Don't listen to a huge amount of KC, so Chic wins by default...

KC & The Sunshine Band were never a disco group, nor were any of their biggest hits disco. They were a pop-funk group and nothing more than that.
And no, Chic were not "very much disco." They were an R&B band that wrote and produced some great disco songs. But if you're familiar with their work, you'd know that there is a lot more to them than just great, uptempo dance numbers.

As far as actual musicianship goes, it's not even remotely comparable.Chic had, quite possibly, the finest rhythm section in popular music during the late 70's/early 80's.Three great, gifted individual musicians, but who possessed such great, tight chemistry that they produced one of the most easily recognizable sounds of that period.

For example there's Sao Paulo, Savoir Faire, Tavern On The Green (Chic), How To Love (Sister Sledge), The Jam Was Moving (Debbie Harry) and I'll Change My Game (Fonzi Thornton). Chic is to KC and the Sunshine Band is what steak is to hamburger.

Of the material I know of these two bands, I'd take Chic, because KC & The Sunshines hits were so cheesy. I can't really stand them.
BUT.....
"I Get Lifted" by KC is the best song by either band. That shit is bad ass!!! Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and...kiss, kiss...

I think "Le Freak" is one of the Top 5 disco singles. That lengthy instrumental segment is one of the finest moments of that whole era y'all know the part I'm talking bout. It's heavenly!

I also think it's one of the funkiest songs of all time also Soul, that rhythm section along with those strings and keys is a perfect blend. [Edited 4/21/13 0:38am]

Nothing wrong with KC, but Chic is the clear winner for me in this punchout. I love Chic and almost all of their production ventures.
BTW, I shook Nile Rodgers hand last summer! RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

I've seen both in concert and that's what influences my decision most. KC you used to be able to see often in their stopping grounds in Florida, which was always fun. But after seeing Chic live (in Montreux), even with its constantly evolving band line-up and side men...I'mma have to say Chic. I danced so hard at their concert I damn near tore ligaments

If you asked me this question when I was 13 and my walls were PLASTERED with KC&SB posters, pix, etc..., I'da said "K.C.," but now that I'm a BIG BOY (49 y/o,) I would honestly have 2 say that my vote would go 2 Chic. Seriously, not only did they have their OWN thang goin' on, BUT, they also were a production maCHINE (Sister Sledge, Diana Ross, Norma Jean Wright and many others.) The only artist I can recall having been produced by KC&SB was the thin-voiced, Teri DeSario and her songs aren't even played today on the radio. Chic's (inside AND outside productions) still ARE! Chic! Great question btw! Thanks 4 helping to awaken my brain cell's today on a "work" Sunday! Hungry? Just look in the mirror and get fed up.

Thats interesting to hear: I wonder did you see KC back in the Mid 70s 74-75? Because the footage i have of them during that time is light years more entertaining than chic.

I used to be a KC&SB diehard fan complete with an official keychain, fanclub membership, t-shirt, etc...Then, I don't know what happened. I got older and my tastes changed. The kinda fell off too quickly, I thought. I also ended up liking them more when the signed with Epic and dabbled in a more synthesized sound. Not sure exactly how they tanked so quickly. I always considered them as more of an R&B unit than a "Disco" band, but the majority has it the other way around. Hungry? Just look in the mirror and get fed up.

I like KC & The sunshine band but they aint got nothing on Chic, amazing band and quality of work. I might be biased cuz I'm a huge Nile Rodgers fan, but regardless Chic is the best and their music is more "timeless" imo.
