Great song. But, not a great choice as the first single. I think the album sales kinda sufferred because of it. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

Leon or Kenny were speaking on this on Phyllis' episode of Unsung, I believe. He said they just weren't sure how to market the album after her passing. I was like, why is it when Rock or Rap stars pass away, their labels are able to come up with great marketing plans for postumous releases but Kenny & Leon, veterans in the music business, weren't able to do the same with Phyllis??? I was quite frankly appalled when the album didn't even crack the Top 10 on the R&B side. And if anyone needed the money, it was her family. She was drowning in debt when she died. I saw a clip on youtube of her singing this live during an interview and you could just hear the pain in her voice...beautiful yet so sad at the same time. 1 of the most annoying things about the music industry is that Phyllis wasn't a bigger star.

It's ok , When I watched her unsung it was the saddest one I've seen (next to Heatwave) . I believe in a way they messed her over [Edited 4/17/13 13:36pm]

I think it was a good choice, but they should have followed it up with "I'm Calling You".That song is quiet storm heaven

I agree. "I'm Calling You" would have been more radio-friendly. When I first heard "Lonely", I really liked the song but was horrified that Gamble & Huff chose it as the initial single. It just wasn't fitting in with what was happening at any black radio stations at the time. Here in Michigan, I only heard the song played on one WGPR a few times. WGPR was a station that was always going outside of the box, playing songs you wouldn't hear anywhere else. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley
