Running up that hill...

DRS: I remember when that song first came out, that lyrically, the women I knew really dug it and understood where Prince was coming from, but initially, a lot of guys I knew didn’t get it.

SR: I could see where it might turn men off. I could see where they would say, “No guy talks like that,” but it’s what women want to hear. And a woman would look at a man saying that and say, “Yes, thank you for recognizing that I think differently from you and wouldn’t it be nice if just for brief periods of time we could be on the same page and you could be my friend and not my adversary and we could think the same way.” That’s what he’s trying to say. Kate Bush said it–Prince was a big fan of Kate Bush–and she said it in her song with that famous line “come on angel, come on darling, let’s exchange the experience.” It has multiple meanings but what she’s saying is “come on let me be you for a minute and you be me, let’s exchange this.

DRS: That’s the song “Running Up That Hill” right?

SR: Right, he played that record to death! He loved that record.

exactly that,

i always loved 'Running up that hill'

and for me this song and 'If I was your girlfriend' are about (the longing for)

being close to someone emotionally, not just physically

You should hear Placebo's version of it. Really cool treatment of this classic.

Cheers! It was also special for Susan to experience Prince's composing process and the lyrics being added right there in the studio to "If I Was Your Girlfriend". I would've liked seeing the sight of Prince getting into Kate's lyrics and melody while turning up the sound of her classic with those spherish drumbeats which introduce her song.

Thanks! Interesting approach indeed. The piano intro somewhat resembles a Ryuichi Sakamoto-ish feel, imo.

Love the Kate Bush version, and I'm not a Kate Bush fan at all. Running Up That Hill and Don't Give Up are really the only two things she's done that I really like. Almost bought the RSD remix 10" of Running Up That Hill this morning. It looks like this. cool

Yes, yes and yes! One of the best cover versions ever.

Will Young did a beautiful version of it with just him and a piano...think its on one of the Radio One Live Lounge albums...well worth tracking down

LOVE Miss Kate! First time I heard her I was terrified tho! It was back in 1985 and I was being introduced to her via the "Hounds of Love" album. When I first heard "Under Ice" and "Waking the Witch," I wanted 2 dive under my bed in fear. LOL! To THIS DAY, I canNOT listen 2 either one in the dark when I'm alone. They scare the ba-JEEZUZ outta me! :-O

Hungry? Just look in the mirror and get fed up.

Yeah, "Don't Give Up" is a wonderful ballad with Peter Gabriel, with also the basic/minimalistic video. And cool artwork of the RSD remix, cheers cool Saw that release being mentioned in an ad, when i watched Kate's "Running.." video on youtube.
