Why do legendary singers say they like the mainstream music scene today when they know its crap?
This is not another complaint thread but a serious question because I just dont understand how artists who play instruments, write their own music and put time into their music can compliment media stars and puppets.
Are they just punkasses (afraid of backlash) or do you think they sincerely enjoy bad music?
I do not know how many times I have heard iconic rappers compliment Drake, Lil Wayne, Nikki music etc likewise with the singers.
I just dont understand it
Are they doing it so they can be "hip"
What are they smoking?
Nobody out now is making any thing iconic or half way descent on the radio. The radio has been shit for over a decade now and these legendary singers glorifying these wack ass acts.

I know what you mean It baffles me whenever I see someone like Quincy Jones or Aretha Franklin praising the weak artists of today.A few years ago,Stephanie Mills said that she wants to work with Lil Wayne, lol.Makes no sense.

I think this is justified criticism. You're really saying out loud what everyone's thinking but is too afraid to say.
Yeah, they most likely just want to appear hip. Maybe they've met some of the new artists (or "artists") in parties, concluded that they're nice enough as people and don't see a point putting them down. Musicians have their own social networks and for some it seems to be quite important to maintain their positions in them.

the labels,tv shows and media support all this garbage and acts as if its right.995 of what we hear on the radio sucks beyonce, justins beiber and timberlake, jennifer hudson, fantasia, neyo, taylor swift, trey songz. i think they all can do a hell of alot better if they were pushed in that direction instead of being told that horseshit is good music .

because for the sake of what they accomplished personally during the years when our music was vibrant and worth
they don't want to say publically how bad things have tanked....
because if they called this stuff out for what it really is, they will be viewed as "haters" and they will be viewed negatively in the process
it's a catch 22.... | |

I say the same thing every time you make a thread or post that bashes an artist but yet you oddly want to scold others for doing the same.

Thats how I think it works as well but not only with music but just with hollywood in general. If they like you then they will praise you regardless of how mediocre you really are. I guess it feels good to compliment a popular artist (that they like) instead of a more talented lesser known one because a more popular act is what people want to hear about.
I think they do it because they know most of these artists are popular and criticizing them would mean they could get some backlash.
I dont see how saying "Popular artists could be more creative with their music" is so horribly mean. Its arguing the truth but at the same time its not directed at anyone.
Although their opinions technically dont mean anything, I think if they were openly honest their opinions could be more beneficial.
They just treat those acts like its a VIP club and if they like you, you get brownie points. When is it ever going to be about the music and the talent? Everything is so calculated now.

Not just music, but sports media does this also. They've constantly hype up this new bunch of athletes to be better than they actually are. But the have to do that in order to have jobs, I guess. Maybe that's another thread though. I actually don't follow anything on these new artists, not even the legends' opinions of them. I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

Right. Maybe its jus proper business etiquette. I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

^ Good points. I dont really care about their opinions either but just find it interesting that they glorify the new acts out now when they know music is not what it use to be (I dont think for one minute they are that crazy behind closed doors and off the camera).
I just wish they wouldnt bullshit for the cameras. Somebody who has been in the industry for over 50-60 years who has watched multiple eras of music knows this shit that is popular now would not have gotten a record deal 30-40 years ago.

Maybe they just like it? I think most of what's out there is crap, but I really like Rihanna. People and tastes are complex. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

^ True.
Its not really the issue with them liking them but they go extra miles to exaggerate their music and talent (when I say the extra mile I mean they reach wayyy to high ).
Liking them is one thing but calling there music artistic and genius is another. Its not fair to the lesser known artists who are actually more creative with their music.

yeah, like how they say Lebron James is better than Michael Jordan when they KNOW that aint the truth.....
| |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I know just crazy | |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
the hype is working.....you got guys all over the place who have been convincd Lebron is better than Jordan
even guys on ESPN have stooped low by saying Michael Jordan faced inferior competition to that Lebron has faced......
I could not believe that network stood on that....
they forgot to consider the fact the 80s and early 90s featured at least 6-7 all time centers who made the greatest 50 ever list who Jordan faced throughout his career
no center in the league now is going to crack that top 50
and Lebron bailed ship and joined forces with another top 5 player and top 10 guy to win a league mandated championship while Jordan paid all time dues before winning his first championship
to "prove" Lebron is better, those running basketball have resorted to tearing down the greatest player ever to build their argument

It's a complex thing. I'm not about to act like I know why they say that... who gives a fuck? If they like it, they like it. So what? Not like they're gonna force us to like it. That's their prerogative and we got our own prerogative. It's good that way. [Edited 4/6/13 7:52am]

Unless you have ESP, how do you know what someone else likes? Just because you don't like something, doesn't mean another person doesn't. There's no such thing as "crap" music, just music snobs. Being a music bigot is not really any different than any other type of prejudice, judging things you don't like, and putting it down. It can't be proven that one act or music is better than another, it's your opinion, not a fact. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

THESE people do it to keep their jobs, to keep the sport relevant. It's the same way in NFL with the overhype and ridiculous contracts of these lame ass QB's. NONE of them would last week playing in the old NFL with the old rules. And my guess is that applies to the legendary artists mentioned in the OP. They know they can;t say, "yeah this bullshit today sucks" for fear of being labeled a "hater" and/ or missing out on opportunites for collabs at these lame ass awards shows. And the post "Running of The Bulls" era in NBA has only produced 4 true superstars worth mentioning among the Greatest of All time: Tim Duncan, Shaq, Kobe, and LeBron....in 15 fucking years. But,yeah that's another thread. I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

good points.....
I think that's why things have been made "easier" for people to excel
because of the standard set by those who were breaking ground when the challenge proved to be the greatest. it took allot of hard work and dedication for those artists of yesteryear to produce the level of output they did......

Because not everyone has the same music tastes as you
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
other than Mick Jagger, Gene Simmons (both fans of pop music) and Paul McCartney (a fan of One Direction, yes) I haven't heard any legendary artist praising the current generation...
Bob Dylan is a fan of Alicia Keys
but that's about it...
and Madonna doesn't truly count, since she inspired like the 90% of pop artists of the new millenium, of course she's gonna "praise" them...
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I don't necessarily think it's true that older artists are praising current stars. But some legendary stars might be reluctant to criticize them because they fear it will just come off as jealousy and bitterness, that they are jealous that they are no longer having hits and these newer artists are at the top of the charts now. I think it's classier to not comment on artists you don't like rather than criticizing them. It's better to focus on what you do and not get caught up in commenting on other artists. I also think there is more diversity in current artists that some people think. I don't see how someone can hate every single newer artists. There are some that are talented and good, and there are others that are crappy and manufactured just like there were in prior generations.

Hasn't Elton John duetted with more than one shit boy band? I remember in the 90s him championing NORTHERN LINE
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Elton seems to perform with hot new acts of the time. It's a bit annoying. I think him dueting with Emimem had a purpose, but the rest... not really.

The thread is not about people.
The thread is about legendary artists (celebrities) who alot of times say things publicly because they do not want to appear like the very thing you are implying in this post.
How is someone a music snob just for pointing that fact out?
I said that there was nothing wrong with the legends liking certain artists but I think sometimes these legends go overboard with the praise just for (t.v.) (AND THEY DO)
I am simply seeking to understand why they cant be more real and objective in their opinions instead of just kissing ass.
But as usual this board will twist and turn and make everyone a music snob just because they may not care for certain artists or seek understanding in anything in that area.
The thread has nothing to do with people or the general public's opinion on music.
