Under 31: Beyonce, Gaga, or Britney

Over 31: Madonna, Cher and that European Madonna rip-off who is very generic (forgot her name)

According to Attitude Magazine Madonna is 'the biggest Gay Icon of All Time' and they told her as much in 2005 when they interviewed her. biggrin

I don't really care for Beyonce, although I see she's talented, I just don't like most of her music and don't get the 'Gay Icon' vibe from her.

But Madonna is like God to me.

She is a huge gay icon here in America, too. Young gay men WORSHIP her. They want to be her. Most of the men I know who love her are gay.

Madonna for sure because she's had more hits and her material endures. I think Bey is great and she vocally slays almost everyone out there, including Madonna. But she doesn't have the songs, and the stuff from her next record doesn't sound promising.

That said, my younger gay friends would choose Bey in a heartbeat over Madonna, and vice versa. The youngsters would swear to you Bey wiped the floor with Madonna at the SB, but us grown folk no better. biggrin

Give them big hair and a mini skirt and the gays start to cry....I still don't see the gay icon thing, I don't see how she connects to gay people like Madonna does for example.

31? Come on don't be dumb. Many people born in 85' and before that consider her huge. The ones after, errr I think they would have eventually discovered her but were not old enough to remember her at her popularity peak as we have.

I dont get comparisions like this. lol

I dont see why yall insist on comparing singers/artists to artists that are NO WHERE on their calibar/status.

Its like saying who is the bigger King of Pop Michael Jackson or Justin Timberlake?

Silly comparisions

Dont you have to be an Icon first before even being considered a gay icon?

Madonna wins this hands down, its not even a competition. lol

She has the songs, the classics and the groundbreaking iconic material/videos/performances. Even in pop culture Madonna is referenced in movies, media etc to being a gay icon.

Beyonceis not even a (music icon) and she does not have the classics and the groundbreaking music/performances as Madonna has. It doesnt matter if she can sing better than Madonna.. Madonna is a REAL ARTIST and Beyonce isnt.

I think a fair and realistic comparision would be between her and Lady Gaga.

Even Mariah and Janet had alot of gay fans but Madonna has always been the bigger gay icon out of all of them.

Is this a serious question?

I thought Madonna had been confirmed to have this dominance in gay culture? Beyonce has it with young black gay dudes maybe but Madonna got all of them.

They are both legendary, iconic artists but on different levels - it's not really a fair comparison, given how much longer Madonna has been around. She is definitely gay pop icon #1. But Beyonce is also very popular among the gay crowd, and if her career continues on its current mega-successful trajectory as long as Madonna's has, then she'll definitely be in the conversation. And I don't doubt that she will continue to be successful, much to the haters' dismay lol

Yeah I think it's pretty obvious who has the most gay fans since Madonna has been a spokesperson for gay rights in the past and she's one of the biggest artists on this planet, so there's no comparison in that sense.

But just like you said, many younger gay fans are more into Bey or even Lady Gaga than Madonna. It's natural since that the music they listen to nowadays, some years ago Xstina had a pretty huge gay following when she did the beautiful song biggrin

Yeah. There's gay folks who like all kinds of music too. Hard rock, punk, rap, etc. One of the gay dudes I sometimes talk with online, his idol is Wendy O. Williams, who was far more edgy than Madonna and Beyonce could dream of being.

I think Madonna for so long has expressed what was/is happening in society in a way that she speaks to a lot of people in general.

But being a fan of popular culture and what was happening in the late 80's the early to mid 90's into the 2000s

but especially the 80s and 90s Madonna put gay culture issues aids sex and gay love in peoples faces. the early 1990s to mid 90's especially (the Sex years) she's alligned herself in a way that Beyonce has never

from the Blond Ambition tours Truth or Dare Immaculate Conception Justify My Love, Erotica Girlie Show tour Sex book her affairs with Sandra Bernhardt & Ingrid Cesar, gay brother, Gianni Virsace, also her constant homoerotic expressions in her videos shows and even music. Beyonce I like, but as an icon I don't think Beyonce is an Icon.

Back then to 'come out' with gay people that openly would always be a risk. Madonna broke down the walls for Christina and Lady Gaga and any others to even do a song Born This Way, I Kissed A Girl, Beautiful, by the time these ladies came along it was totally acceptable to be 'gay friendly'

true, gay people love hip hop too hardcore, homophobic stuff it seems,

My cousin is gay and he loves almost every type of music style

On a serious note though we do female entertainers always have to be on the top of lists for ''gay icons'' i get that they did a lot for the community and all that jazz.

But imo it is a bit of sterotyping by people always naming ''divas'' as gay icons when there are people in rock, funk, hip-hop, r&B, soul, metal, country etc.

Fuck a Madonna icon what about Rob Halford from Judas Priest? one of the inventors of the metal genre came out in 1998 and he isn't on a list... he did a lot for the community as well he just didn't do it in front of cameras.

Or Doug Winbush who played bass for Living Colour and also played bass on iconic songs like The Message by Grandmaster Flash & Beat Street... why is he not on these lists.

Well gay icons are usually women, but I agree with your sentiment.

But yeah, Beyonce is a gay icon. Not as big as Madonna but still huge.

Her appeal? In my opinion it's her total lack of restraint. She doesn't seem to see the line she shouldn't cross. Everything is extra. It might be purposeful now, but when she was first starting it was totally by happenstance. It was just her. Gay boys love this stuff.

Even during the Destiny's Child days they were laying the ground work. Every song was an anthem that was tailor made for performance. You can act out all the wrist twirling and neck rolling right in your living room. Put-downs every other line. Histrionic vocals. Catch-your-breathe, machine gun delivery. It was all there.

I agree with this. You actualy brought up alot of eras I didnt think of. I only had thought of the Vogue era. I think people use the term "icon" too loosely. Madonna has actually done things for the gay community and has alot of iconic dance moves/performances/videos attached to the community.

Just because an artist has gay fans does not make them a gay "icon" there are gay fans of every artist.

Yes, she is the queen of young black gay men. Go to any message board where there is a lot of them and you will see. They even acted like "Bow Down" was the song of the decade when it came out a few weeks ago.

Of course. Being Gay has nothing to do with your musical taste, I know many gay people who hate modern music and only listen to classical music, so that alone doesn't make you a gay icon. But ever since her Single Ladies video, her gay fanbase grew and many of her most loyal fans are gay. She's also a supporter of Frank Ocean and her husband Jay-Z supports gay rights, so I think that also has given her a following of young gay fans.

I think the phrase "gay icon" is used way too loosely, also. Especially when it comes to female artists, in particular black female artists. If they have more than a couple dozen gay fans, that "Gay Icon" stamp is branded on them. I swear, there are a lot of artists I listened to when I was growing up and I had absolutely no idea they were considered gay icons until I got on the internet. I knew about people like Patti and Diana because when you went to their shows, it was obvious the enormous number of gay fans they had. But, the rest?eek People were making it seem like if you listened to any female artists, period, you must be gay. disbelief

But, I do think Beyonce is a huge gay icon among young gay black men. I haven't met one who absolutely adored her yet. ill She's the Queen of Dance Music, she's glamorous, she whips her long hair, she's been on the cover of every fashion magazine and she has attitude. If that's not a gay icon, I don't know what is. biggrin

Thats just one demographic (black men and most of these opinions are based on generalizations and doesnt speak for ALL black men) and I have meant some black men straight and even gay black men who dont think of her as a hero or queen.

And although it is off topic ( I even know some black girls around my age who dont care for her either)

I am not suggesting she doesnt have gay fans but the bolded does not necessarily make her a "gay icon" if thats what you think so be it, I disagree.

I think the points that Oldfriendforsales made were spot on.

How is she the "queen of dance music" when she has lower dance number ones than Janet, Madonna, Mariah and Rihanna?

Being on the cover of a fashion magazine doesnt make you an Icon ( How does she have attitude? Because she is boring as hell (personality wise))

Very generic reasons
