mj is bad boy but as far I I know, MJ did not write his music, someone else did.

How do you know? never met this information from major sources.
most of his songs have the same kind of structure, so who would write his songs, it was one and the same person since 1976 to 2001
he was a child prodigy, this is usually the main "symptom" of genius.

but this is not in defense of his genius for me ... I wrote that it is too early to assess the genius of our contemporaries, he is one of the obvious candidates.

all the artists named in the thread, and extremely talented, but genius! - It is subjective!
Paul McCartney to me - the closest to genius. wink

Cliche - Talent borrows, genius steals.A few thoughts that come to mind - GENIUS can be described as an artist/ individual who for a length of time or at moments is seen as being possessed of some profound talent and a great ability to communicate their message to the wider world. IMO - Ain't really any geniuses in the world. Just some folks working really hard to be the best they can be, being in the right place at the right time to get exposure and popularity/ respect in the world. Many artists have MOMENTS of genius, some have more than others. Some artists have a great run of great material in their '20s and early '30s, then it seems to slow down/ tail off. Been loads of those, Prince included, also Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Michael and a load more. Some get their form back in part later on, if they're lucky, like Bowie in the 90s and beyond. But imo few would say any of the above were true 'geniuses' in their 40, 50s and beyond. Some music icons - Elvis, James Brown, MJ, Beatles, Stones, Dylan. All these and more imo have moments of genius. The only real genius in the pop/ rock/ soul worlds I would risk naming as such would be Jimi Hendrix, mainly for his deeply soulful innovation of the sounds of the electric guitar in the late '60s. For me, at times, that musician seemed to have some kind of creative connection with God, if there is one cool . I give you Machine Gun as a prime example. However, if Jimi had lived another 10+ years, he would probably be viewed very differently and with more recognised flaws and weak works to his name. But, as we have him, truly we shall never see/ hear the like again. Most so-called solo geniuses actually have collaborators/ team members, so their work is often actually a team effort, so not really a single 'genius' effort, Stevie with Tonto's Head Band, the Beatles quartet + George Martin, James Brown + his bandmembers etc, Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys. Genius is an unhelpful term imo. Part of the hype, marketing of the music industry, but the reality is complicated human beings in a complicated world getting lucky and making THAT connection with the people at the right time in their careers and in history.I wouldn't want to be a genius, it can't be good for your health, looking at many that are described as such smile .

I guess I'm not very strict when it comes to this, because it is popular music we're talking about. To me, a musical genius in popular music doesn't have to be like Prince who sings and plays all his instruments and writes, produces, and arranges his material that covers a lot of genres. I think a genius can be a great vocalist like Frank Sinatra or Ella Fitzgerald or a great songwriter or a great instrumentalist or a great producer like Phil Spector, or even a great visionary like George Clinton, so my list would be too long. But I am kind of surprised that Ray Charles hasn't been mentioned since he's probably the first popular musician to be really promoted as a "genius."

Stevie Wonder is definitely a genius.A musician who can create something as mind-blowing as 'Innervisions' and 'Songs In The Key Of Life' is an amazing genius,in my book.

Bob Dylan, Bob Dylan. A genius would know not to release that billygoat sounding voice on the public. I can't. I don't give a rat's ____. It needs to be said.

The thang is, Prince isn't the only one who can do all of those things

But it's always use as the first arguement to defined him as a genius

Yeah I know there are more who can do that like Paul McCartney or Todd Rundgren or Stevie Wonder, but I don't think that the term "musical genius" should be limited to just guys like that.

Some do the same with Prince though.
