Is Beverley Knight really the queen of British Soul?

I saw her on a doc with Jamiroquai and that is what he called her and also commentators on the vid. I've never heard of her before.

well no-one else is. she's the queen, the princess, the duchess and whatever else female royalty is called as the UK is piss poor at providing any soul/rnb stars

but bev is a great singer, and a reall geniunely nice person. i've seen and met her a few times over the years. she knows a lot about prince too

She thinks she is and certainly comes across as very entitled. Shame her songs are generally shit save for 2 or 3.

If you're talking in the past, then Dusty Springfield.

if you don't have to be british to be included, how about we just say aretha franklin is the queen of british soul? or james brown? it doesn't say you have to be alive or a woman does it?

Sade has lived in Britain since the age of 4 and one of her parents was English. She's a British citizen. Wher you're born doesnt determine your nationality otherwise both of my very English parents would be Israeli and Iranian.

Sade is a band.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Barbara Robinson, and before you ask, I don't know what happened to her. lol I guess Leroy Osbourne took her place.

i'm aware of that, and that sade is a band, and helen adu is the name of the person being referenced. but as far as the title goes, you may as well make freddie mercury the queen of british soul, even though he wasn't born here, he's dead, he's a he, and he didn't sing soul music, but he was a queen at least, so has as much entitlement to the name as helen does

I know that lol! I always say that on here anyways.. But I meant Helen (Sade) Adu to be more precise because she's the lead singer after all, but I love the band!

The title, in MY opinon, would go to Helena Folasade Adu. SHE is the Queen of British Soul and HAS BEEN for over 25 years now. smile

What defines soul music? Amy's got to be somewhere in these lists, she's the best British female artist to come out in years and she definitely had soul.

I know her music and she has a good voice Her music lacks that true gritiness that defines real soul. In actuality there has not really been a great British soul singer who redefined their music most of them are talented who love to sing soul.

Beverly is top five of Brits with soul

To me the best British soul

** Sade and Dusty Springfield (All Supreme Untouchables)

1. Amy Winehouse

2. Maxine Nightingale

3. Floetry

4. Lisa Stansfield

5. Beverly Knight

6. Rebecca Ferguson

7. Corrine Bailey Rae

8. Mica Paris

9. Adele

10. Florence Welch

I much prefer Gabrielle to her - at least she has sizable hits.

Lisa Stansfield and Sade are others who are more worthy.

Although I still love this New Jack debut from Knight:
