Shania twain and garth brooks-- what happened ? I'm not a huge country fan, but u remember for quite a few years these two were the faces of country crossover. I know some will say the infamous GB/Chris Gaines fiasco killed it for him ( which I still have on my iTunes rotation) But Shania was everywhere. Was it the rise of Carrie Underwood ? Thoughts?

What happened to Shanie was MONEY
I am from TX so her music was and still is played like a religion down there! she has 3 albums that managed to all sell over 10 million copies(Country music fans don't mess around...)
And she got a ton of money and left pretty much...
Garth Brooks as well. Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Do you think country fans shunned her when she did that futuristic video when she was riding some kind of high tech cycle ?

She mounted a high-speed motorcycle in the video for "I'm Gonna Get Ya Good". UP, the 2002 album from which the song came, sold nearly 6M copies in North America. Thereafter, she moved to Switzerland, got divorced and now she's doing a Vegas residency. Her career lost momentum because she hasn't recorded an album of new material in over a decade.

Shania's divorce was key because her collaborater was also her husband. I think she could have followed up her 2002 album by now without him, but that's "what happened".
Garth Brooks also hasn't recorded a whole album in a long time. His 2007 hits package had a new track on it that was popular in country, but his last full original album is from the end of 2001.
Imagine if Mary J Blige hadn't put out any albums since No More Drama. Where would she be?

Honestly i am glad Garth stays away ugh can't stand his music... but hey he hussled and got a good business going.
Country music fans are very supportive of their fans and that is why country albums always sell very well if an artists gets big on the country charts. Hell Lionel did a country album and it gave his biggest album since the 80s
Shania has sold a shit ton of copies as has Garth so i think they just decided to not make music anymore.
Plus i think she had a TV Show or something right? Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Shania also did a reality show type of thing on OWN, Oprah Winfreys God-awful TV channel!! To me that was the final nail in her coffin!!
Also, Garth Brooks married Trisha Yearwood and I think hes just content to sit back and let her be the main breadwinner in the family now, Trisha has or had a cookery show on the Food Network, if I recall!!

The Beatles did one of those too. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I remember that and the Behind-The-Music episode he did as the character. It was cool of him to think outside the box and do something original. But that whole thing was just weird. ~Using the Fat Albert emoticon 'cause no one else is... ~

You do know Garth retired? He retired years ago, mainly because he made so much fucking money. I don't think we have to worry about him.
He does occasionally play in Vegas where he charges almost 300 dollars a seat to see him. I don't feel sorry for him.
Shania just stopped having hits. Boys 2 Men are in the same boat, Babyface, a whole host of others. All you others say Hell Yea!!

Garth sem-retired from music in 2001, which coincided with the release of his last platinum-selling album of new songs. Last year he wrapped a 3-year residency at the Wynn Hotel/Casino in Las Vegas. I doubt he's thinking about Top 100 chart dominance.

Shania had a nervous break down, but without the hysterics and public acting out. Her husband Mutt Lang cheated on her with best friend, a woman whom she begged to leave her and her family alone. The woman was very clear that she was in love with Mutt, and was going to have him, Mutt agreed that yes he loved that woman and would leave Shania for her. Not long after it triggered a traumatic episode of sorts and she literally lost her ability to sing, period. There was nothing physically wrong with her, it was psychosomatic.
Last year her journey to learn how to sing again was chronicled in a reality show she did on OWN. It was sad to see how the color and texture of her voice had changed (dramatically! She couldn't project, she had pitch problems, it was like seeing a completely different singer); her voice was bottled up inside her the way you would imagine a genie being locked up in a bottle. iI was also sad to see the betrayal had turned her into a kind of introvert who really needed to do a lot of spiritual work to press through fears she had regarding abandonment, violent episodes of her childhood, and trust issues . The Mutt thing with the best friend did a real number on her head.
After a variety of physical/spiritual/psychological therapies, throat doctors, and re-training her voice with a teacher, she did do some work with Lionel Richie and David Foster, and as of 2012 secured a residency in Vegas with a show called "Still the One" at Ceasars Palace:
So she's moved on, looks like...and even married herself a nice Frenchman.

He went deep with that thing... like... deep

Initially I did find that completely confusing and bizarre, but looking at the larger picture I imagine the hurt that they experienced in their separate worlds with their previous spouses is what bonded them. There is something completely awkward about seeing the two people who were betrayed align themselfves together and it's very hazy, I know. But if they have managed to let go of that past hurt, managed to find healing together, press past all the gunk that messed their heads up previously, and are growing together productively as committed life partners, then...meh, Mazel Tov to the newlywed couple

Her voice, when she would try to sing would have you looking at the tv like . Whether she was speaking or singing she sounded like she had a disorder, or something stuck in her throat. Everything about her was wound up tight like a ball. As time would progress, you would see how for example, she would do things like get out and exercise (ride horses, rock climb), and slowly she would start to come out of her shell--it was a shell that was like a combo of low-self esteem, being scared to sing, and being really really mad still at Mutt and Mary Lou (or whatever that name was). I also don't remember whether or not Mutt was in a place to want to be actively involved with co-parenting their son at that time, either. It was just bad. I guess you could almost compare it a mid-life crisis, but for women.

Nah, it struck me as being an authentic relationship. But during filming of her show you could definitely see that because Twain was soooooo wound up she was having a problem with going forward into marriage with him. You might as well have written " My name is Shania and because I still have the baggage from what happened 3 years ago pressing on me like a dead weight I can't escape, I can love you but I can't trust you..or anyone really".
But this is why people get therapy, so they can get the tools to deal with these types of feelings.
I hope she is in a happy place.

Shania wasn't really a typical country artist, at least starting with her second album. Typically country artists release an album a year (sometimes every other year) and the albums contain two, maybe three, singles. Shania was more like Michael Jackson in that each album was like a greatest hits album that had five, six or seven big singles. She didn't release albums as regularly as her peers but she really milked them for singles.
Garth? I'm not really sure. My interpretation is that he was so successful in the nineties that he is a little afraid to compete with himself and the expectations that people have. Like his music or not he sold an insane amount of albums and he really doesn't need to keep making new music.

As far as I understand it, Garth Brooks essentially retired (saying something like, 'I already have more money than me, my kids and grandchildren could ever spend').
As for Shania, I remember hearing that she'd signed on to do a reality show on OWN - the theme being her "comeback" - and I was like " ". She was (is?) a major superstar and her last record had been a massive #1.
While common sense dictates that Lange was the architect of the hooks, there are a zillion hitmakers out there that she could collaborate with. I understand the temptation of a Vegas residency (who wants to schlep their tuchus around the world?), but there's zero reason she couldn't hook up with Max Martin (or whomever) and crank out another juggernaut of an album. Shoulda stuck with Landau.
Personally, I couldn't give two s about either's music, but there ya go.
