I am enjoying the sleeve/liner design and contents (full lyrics).

I bought the deluxe edition with three bonus tracks but I am stuck on about a dozen on the main album (eh, only day 2 I've had the album).

Not sure what happened to the other thread - very bizarre.

But the album is amazing - i'm still completely engrossed by it. It's such a DARK album. I really paid attention to most of the lyrics last night and was really struck by how much blood and death permeates this album. "Valentine's Day" in particular is really powerful and dark, and particularly relevant today. There's such an ambiguity about it. It's apparently about someone being told by a student that he's going on a school rampage - "it's happening today". So the question is, what does he do about it? Is it real or just vengeful boasting?

Then you've got the blood soaked fields of war and death in "How Does the Grass Grow". The mournful, elegiac "Where Are We Now".... it goes on and on.

Great album that fans will be talking about for a long time, just like all of his great works.

Really? I thought it was pretty clearly laid out in the lyrics, but I could be way off. What was your interpretation? That's the great thing about Bowie songs. People are still debating the meaing of songs that are 30+ years old

That's exactly how I took it - the murderer is named Valentine. It's a really chilling song.

I don't think it's happened yet, though. "It's happening today". I think Valentine is fantasizing it, picturing it all in his head how it will be. "Valentine sees it all". And he's telling someone else about it, putting someone in the situation of deciding what to do... and it's left ambiguous at the end.

Yeah... nice. You're dead on, I think (no pun intended). LOVE the song. The guitar and bass create such a great, deep groove.

This is another classic. And again, really really dark. Definitely open to interpretation, but it seems either really bitter towards someone in particular, or could it be directed internally? I don't take anything Bowie does as autobiographical or as him personally as the narrator. He's adopted so many characters over the years... sometimes over the course of the album, sometimes just for one song. It's a brilliant recording though. And the ending... that faint echo of the "Five Years" intro... it's just fantastic. I can't wrap my head around how much I'm loving this album heh

Apparently, Tony Visconti asked Bowie what 'Heat' is about and he said that it's not him or autobiographical, he's just an observer. I read a review and the writer commented that, even though it mght not be autobiographical, what Bowie sings about says a lot about him. I suppose that it true.

BTW, has anyone heard 'God bless the girl'? It's on the Japanese edition only.

I was going to buy the Japanese version but the price was too high for one extra song... Just got the deluxe CD which I am listening to now for the first time... So far, I am pleased with it... "The Next Day"--a great opening song, as well as "Dirty Boys" on the heels of it (strongly reminds me of Jim Morrison here at the beginning...).
