Org Mixtape Project : Paligap - "Night Train Tracks"

...

[img:$uid]http://imgix.8tracks.com/i/000/174/327/c/Night_Train_7-1940.jpg?fm=jpg&q=65&w=1024&h=1024&fit=max[/img:$uid]

I don’t know if these will play in order, LOL- but anyway, this is the original intended order--the way I first played the tracks …

...

Night Train Tracks

http://8tracks.com/paliga...ain-tracks

...

On the Metro….Listening to music for the last train home….

......

1: Intro and Descent:

...

Ian O’ Brien –“The Sentinel”

...

I flip on my headphones as our metro leaves the station, and the train seems to pick up the beat…

...

Multi-instrumentalist and DJ Ian O’Brien has been a celebrated force on the Electronica front for years now. This excerpt is from a compilation entitled, “The Trip Do West” (2003)

...

2: The Beauty Room – “No Rejection”

The Beauty Room is keyboardist/DJ/mixer Kirk Degiorgio and keyboardist/vocalist Simon Jinadu. Their debut album was a great mix of Progressive Pop and Electronica—kind of like Steely Dan and Crosby, Stills, Nash &Young meeting 4Hero and Jazzanova. This track is from The Beauty Room’s second album, “Beauty Room II” (2012)….

...

Jinadu - Lead Vocals, Keyboards; Kirk Degiorgio - Keyboards, Vocals; Brian Bromberg – Bass; Rob Harris – Guitar; Chris Whitten - Drums, Percussion; Paul Buckmaster - String Arrangements

...

3: Kim Burrell, with Foley – “Math (Lead Bass)”

...

George Clinton’s piece, “Mathematics” has seen several incarnations over the years—This is Miles Davis collaborator Joseph “Foley” McCreary’s take—with his guitar-like lead bass mirroring Kim Burrell’s first take of the track.

...

Kim Burrell – Vocals, Foley - Lead (Piccolo) Bass, Chris “Big Dog”Davis - Keyboards

...

4: Philip Owusu – “Goodnight”

...

Philip Owusu is a musician based in Copenhagen, Denmark. He first hit the scene as part of the duo, Owusu and Hannibal. Their 2006 collaboration “Living with Owusu and Hannibal” became an underground favorite. This new track is from Philip’s forthcoming album.

.Philip Owusu: Keys, Guitar, Bass, Lead & Background Vox and Production

...

5: Lewis Taylor“You Make Me Wanna”

...

As the train picks up speed and begins to surge, it mirrors the pulse of this track-“all the way down”….

...

Musician Lewis Taylor was already an underground phenomenon when his second album, “Lewis II” arrived, further solidifying his stature among musicians and fans as a fresh and inspiring force. Unfortunately, just as albums like “Stoned” and “The Lost Album” were bringing him to wider recognition, he decided to withdraw from the music industry. Tracks like this one remain as a testament to his brilliant gifts…

Lewis Taylor - Guitar, Bass, Keyboards, Harmonica, Vocals; Gavin Harrison - Drums

...

6: Kate Bush – Pi

...

As we continue through the tunnels, this track is called up, and it seems to sync with the train’s pulsating rhythm…”In a circle of infinity….3.14159 26535 89793 23846 26433 83279”…LOL! From Kate’s 2005 album set, “Aerial”…

...

Kate - Keyboards,Vocals; Stuart Elliott -Drums; Eberhard Weber - Bass; Dan McIntosh - Guitar; Lol Crème -Additional Vocals

...

7: Positive Flow, with Stacy Epps – “Push”

...

Positive Flow is the brainchild of UK-based multi-instrumentalist producer Jesse Reuben Wilson. The new album “Flow Lines” features an array of talent including Omar, Stacy Epps, Colonel Red, Andre Espeut, Vanessa Freeman, and Heidi Vogel….

...

8 Monosabio Blues – Gecko Turner w/Eska (Philip Owusu Remix)

...

“Monosabio Blues” was originally a track from artist Gecko Turner. However, this 2007 Philip Owusu remix transforms it into another animal altogether, keeping only the vocals from the original track.

...

9 Janelle Monae – Metropolis

...

Although this track is called “Metropolis”, it is actually from Janelle’s unreleased 2003 album, “The Audition”. The song’s concept of the Cindi Mayweather android was continued in her later releases “Metropolis”, and the “Archandroid”….

...

10 Emily King – “Sides”

...

The train slowly makes its way to my final destination…

Emily King is a singer songwriter from NYC. Her first album, East Side Story, was nominated for a Grammy. This track from her 2011 EP called “Seven”, produced by Emily and guitarist J. Most….

This tracklist is drool

I still need to crank out my comments on aardvark and pp4's mixes (both of which I really enjoyed). Then I'm onto this one. Good show, paligap!

3: Kim Burrell, with Foley – “Math (Lead Bass)”

...

I dont know too much about Kim Burrell but this was really good! I didnt know this is a interpolation of a George Clinton song? Imma have to look it up..or find the original to compare.

...

...

5: Lewis Taylor“You Make Me Wanna”

...

He has a really nice voice. Never heard of him. I was wondering where the beat was going because it sounded a little weird in production but it worked very well once it started. I see you are keen to very good vocalists.

...

6: Kate Bush – Pi

...

I was wondering what the ...point..of this song is. i might need to look at the lyrics. However it didnt matter too much because Kate Bush's lovely vocals the sweet music and the emotion put into this song flowed really well with the rest of the track you have on the album smile

...

7: Positive Flow, with Stacy Epps – “Push”

...

This was nice...didnt really think too much on it. Kind of like underground hip hop..but with a jazzy feel..nineties like.

...

...

9 Janelle Monae – Metropolis

...

You know I never heard the last Janelle Monae album. I did like this track..and actually thought it was from the album. Even though it is not on it..makes me want to check out the new album again

...

10 Emily King – “Sides”

...

Really warm and beautiful. This really sums up the feel and theme of the mixtape.

Not his fault, though--- Lewis sure ain't a household name, and from what I can tell, he wants to make sure that it never happens--he won't even let people post his stuff on youtube --disbelief

Your mix has a great flow. I think I’ll play this the next time the grownups get togther for dranks and whatnot. While I found something to like in each of the songs, these are the ones that really did it for me:

The Sentinel - Great way to start things off. It totally fits in with the whole train motif.

No Rejection - This what I would listen to on a road trip. Its got a dusk/sunset vibe to it. Dudes voice reminds me of Olu.

Kim Burrell - This is awesome! Her voice is brilliant in and of itself; but then you add the guitar mirroring her vocals and the tracks reaches a whole ‘nother level.

Goodnight - This is dope.

You Make me Wanna- Got turned onto this guy via the Org. I think it may have been one of your posts. This song is a slow build, but the payoff is worth it. By the time the drums kick in it all headbang

Pi- worship No words necessary

Monosabio Blues - This is soulful and electronic at the same time. Cool track.

Janelle Monae (Metropolis)- music music

This is what you want...This is what you get.

1 – The Sentinel

I don’t know how to describe what I’m trying to say but the track starts out basically in drums and I love the warmth of the chord progression that introduces itself and winds its way through the song. Amazing.

2 – No Rejection

I love the vocal quality of the male musicians that you have showcased both in the past and here right now. I am not drawn to male singers in general but this man has a beautiful voice.

3 – Math

No you DIDN’T! biggrin I loved seeing an interview with Chaka where she remembers first hearing Kim Burrell. She basically flipped out lol And I LOVE what George Clinton did with this on Mathematics! clapping It is amazing to hear this in this context. So different than what I’m used to hearing on GCs TAPOAFOM

4 – Goodnight

I love the flourish of this song smile

5 – You Make Me Wanna

Damn. This song is WOW! clapping That buildup biggrin biggrin biggrin How many albums does this guy have? I only have 2 but I know this is not on the ones I have. This is a good reminder to grab the rest of his stuff. He is amzing.

5 – Pi

Wow! I was sent a collection of outtakes from her and I had a hard time getting into any of it. I love this song so much it makes me want to revisit and check out her stuff. And the fact that it is about numbers mushy heart My God I love this song.

I have no proper albums of hers. Do you have a fave? I will go with that one cuz I know you wouldn’t steer me wrong lol wink

6 – Push

Who. Is. This. Chick? Never heard of her but I love her biggrin

7 – Monosabio Blues

I’m astounded by the music you have in your collection. I almost wouldn’t even know where to begin to find any of this stuff. Where do you live? I need to raid your music collection lol

8 – Metropolis

mushy

9 – Sides

Another song with an amazing build up. Blunt ending though lol

Of course I knew I would LOVE your mix. You have the best taste in music biggrin I want to book a train ride at night so I can listen to this again heart mushy

Hey, Thanks, Supa! I love your music, too! I'm so glad you got a listen!! ( Hope we'll hear another Mix from you in the future, if ya get the time...)

Lewis Taylor albums --that's tricky--that song is from his album, Lewis II (my favorite--but for some reason, it isn't available on iTunes at the moment?)

Originally, I guess there were about 7 albums-- Lewis Taylor, Lewis II, Stoned Part 1, Stoned Part 2, The Lost Album, Limited Edition 2002, and Limited Edition 2004.....Then, bits of limited 2002 got pared with Stoned Part 1, and that was repackaged by Hacktone as just Lewis Taylor - Stoned.....or something like that , lol the other problem is that the later albums have reworkings and different versions of songs from his other albums...so it can be confusing telling what version came from which album.....I like 'em all, but Lewis Taylor, Lewis II, and Stoned (newer version) are my favorites....

For Kate Bush...yeah, that's pretty varied, too...but I would say, check out The Sensual World, Hounds of Love, and Aerial...and if you like any of that, then venture into her other material....just my opinion, but I think those are the most listener-friendly, gateway albums....but Kate fans might have other ideas.....

For Kate Bush...yeah, that's pretty varied, too...but I would say, check out The Sensual World, Hounds of Love, and Aerial...and if you like any of that, then venture into her other material....just my opinion, but I think those are the most listener-friendly, gateway albums....but Kate fans might have other ideas.....

...

Did Lewis go crazy????? lol So weird.

As for Kate, I don't think I necessarily need anything that is "listener-friendly" just wasn't touched or moved from the stuff I had. I LOVED this song though. The fact that it is about numbers makes me love it even more. love2

I'm not sure what really happened to Lewis-- seems like he realized that he was happier being at home, occasionally playing music with friends rather than being in the spotlight--from some of his last interviews, you kinda got the sense that he was caring less and less about music as a profession. However, what isn't clear is why he removed all of his videos from youtube and took down his fan site.......I wish I knew....still scratchin' my head over that one...

Oh, with the Kate stuff-- I probably should have just said that those are my favorite Kate Bush albums (oh, also Never Forever, I love that one, too!)...It just so happens that they're propbably more accessible......
