Michelle Shocked is one of those names everyone is familiar with, but nobody's ever actually heard her music or could name you one of her songs without looking it up on Wikipedia.

^Speak for yourself alot of lesbian and gays know who she is. She was quite popular back in the early 90's. That's why this tirade is so bizarre. She's alienating her base. The Most Important Thing In Life Is Sincerity....Once You Can Fake That, You Can Fake Anything.

Let me throw one back and say "goodbye love." She don't want to talk to me no how.
It really is a crazy sad thing considering the deep and inspirational shit she was putting out there back in the day - "Anchorage" alone!
Sinead came out shortly after Michelle back in the day. Oddly enough there is a symetry to each of their current states - mental health. I would not be suprised if there were a clinical diagnosis for Shocked as well. Fear, Crazy, and Christianity are not a pretty trio, but they always seem to get invited to the best parties together.
This song pulls my heart along when things get heavy. I will still listen to this song - she can't fucking have it back. It belongs to me now. Fuck that noise she is spewing now. http://www.myspace.com/video/michelle-shocked/michelle-shocked-come-a-long-way-michelleshocked-com/106484903

Michelle Shocked's Anti-Gay Rant Leads to Canceled Tour Dates
She goes by the stage nameMichelle Shocked, but at the singer's concert in San Francisco on March 17, it was her fans who were left stunned when she went on an anti-gay tirade and was kicked offstage. Citing Old Testament verses from the Bible, the indie-folk artist and born-again Christian told the audience at Yoshi's that she hoped the courts would uphold Proposition 8, an amendment to the California state constitution that bans gay marriage. "When they stop Prop 8 and force priests at gunpoint to marry gays, it will be the downfall of civilization, and Jesus will come back," she reportedly said. "You can go on Twitter and say, 'Michelle Shocked says God hates f-gs.'" At that point, much of the audience walked out and a club manager announced that Shocked's show was over. When she attempted to continue her set, staff at Yoshi's quite literally pulled the plug on her and turned off the stage lights. In the wake of the rant, 10 of the singer's 11 upcoming tour dates have been canceled, Billboardreports. "Many of you have reached out already following an ugly rant given by Michelle Shocked at her show in San Francisco last night," promoters of SPACE in Illinois posted on the venue's Facebook page on March 18. "After speaking with the promoter of that show about the nature of the remarks, it's clear that this is no longer a show we're willing to put our name on." This is not the "Greener Side" singer's first anti-gay controversy. Though she told OutLines in 1990 that she had once had a relationship with a woman, her views on homosexuality began to change when she rediscovered religion. PHOTOS: Buzzed-about musicians "There are some inconvenient truths that I'm now a born again, sanctified, saved-in-the-blood Christian," she told the Dallas Voice in 2008. "So much of what's said and done in the name of that Christianity is appalling. According to my Bible, which I didn't write, homosexuality is immoral. But homosexuality is no more or less a sin than fornication. And I'm a fornicator with a capital F." A few years later, at the 2011 Wild Goose Festival, she was asked by an audience member about her views on the subject. "Who drafted me as a gay icon?" she replied. "You are looking at the world's greatest homophobe. Ask God what he thinks." This article originally appeared on Usmagazine.com: Michelle Shocked's Anti-Gay Rant Leads to Canceled Tour Dates

Michelle Shocked "Very Sorry" for "Misinterpreted" Anti-Gay Marriage Remarks
By Kate Stanhope | TV Guide – 1 hour 6 minutes ago
Michelle Shocked is speaking out days after she incited a mass walk-out at one of her concerts for what many believed to be remarks against gay marriage. During her rant, Shocked cited verses from the Old Testament condemning homosexuality and encouraged the crowd to go on Twitter "and say 'Michelle Shocked says God hates f---.'" Shocked, 51, says that her remarks at a San Francisco concert on Sunday were misunderstood and that she was only saying that "some" religious followers believes that God hates homosexuals. "I do not, nor have I ever, said or believed that God hates homosexuals (or anyone else)," she said in a statement obtained by Spin. "When I said, 'Twitter that Michelle Shocked says 'God hates f------s,' I was predicting the absurd way my description of, my apology for, the intolerant would no doubt be misinterpreted." Formerly gay alt-folk rock singer Michelle Shocked slams gay marriage during concert Shocked continued: "And to those fans who are disappointed by what they've heard or think I said, I'm very sorry: I don't always express myself as clearly as I should. But don't believe everything you read on Facebook or Twitter. My view of homosexuality has changed not one iota. I judge not. And my statement equating [the] repeal of Prop 8 with the coming of the End Times was neither literal nor ironic: it was a description of how some folks - not me - feel about gay marriage." Since her remarks on Sunday, 10 venues canceled upcoming concerts with Shocked. In her statement, Shocked also briefly addressed questions about her own sexuality, but said that that information was "irrelevant." Shocked went onto say that her comments were not planned ahead of time. "But I am damn sorry. If I could repeat the evening, I would make a clearer distinction between a set of beliefs I abhor and my human sympathy for the folks who hold them," she said. "I say this not because I want to look better. I have no wish to hide my faults, and - clearly - I couldn't if I tried."

It's possible.
Everything is misinterpreted these days and you have to be so direct with people in order for them to get any point.
Is that the case? I don't know and am not going to waste time piercing through it either.

I read about this on Facebook and I also commented on it but then I read this very long interview which made me change my mind a bit: http://www.leeaaron.com/j...-the-song/
Beware, it is a VERY long read, and, knowing that most orgers have the attention span of the fish in my fishtanks, I know most of you will probably fall asleep halfway through....
Just scroll down to the end of the interview, that´s where it gets interesting. I´m not here to defend her, I didn´t even know who she was before I read about her on FB but it is important to consider the circumstances and her background (she is or was mentally unstable in the past, so I have mixed feelings about judging her behavior).

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) -- Her show had been cancelled, but that didn't stop alternative folk and rock singer Michelle Shocked from showing up at a Santa Cruz nightclub where she staged a sit-in with tape across her mouth that read "Silenced By Fear." Moe's Alley was one of several nightclubs that cancelled Shocked's gigs after she made what were considered anti-gay comments during a rambling outburst at a show earlier this month. On Thursday evening, Moe's Alley owner Bill Welch had replaced her with two local bands that support gay rights, Beaver Fever and Frootie Flavors. "We will not be bashing Michelle Shocked," he said. "Rather, we will celebrate music, diversity and send some healing Santa Cruz energy her way." Sitting on the ground outside the venue and strumming her guitar, Shocked was largely ignored and refused to speak. She pointed to a sign inviting people to pick up a Sharpie marker and write on the white disposable safety suit she was wearing. Earlier this week in an email to The Associated Press and other media, Shocked apologized and said her comments during the San Francisco show were misinterpreted. "Of course the fault for that is completely my own, and I cannot and do not blame anyone for defending the gay community," she wrote. On Thursday night, she posted signs that read "Does speech scare you that much?" and on her back she had scrawled "Gimme Wit, Not Spit."

It's probably just the simple case of an artist audience not getting the artists sense of humor. In todays world you can't be cute, or subtle, or ironic and expect people to get that. You have to either be direct or tell the audience that you're being ironic.
