MONK’estra celebrates Monk and other classic compositions, with a contemporary twist incorporating Afro-Cuban rhythms, modern jazz playing, Hip-Hop and traditional big band instrumentation, along with originals by Beasley.

Had the pleasure of meeting the extremely talented John Beasley at the 3 Brave Souls show last week: http://prince.org/msg/8/393110

He very graciously invited me be be a guest at his MONK'estra project performance at Vitello's.

...Promo for his 2009 release Positoothly! and an interview on his 2008 release Letter To Herbie

Sounds like a great Night!!

I 've been a fan of Beasley since I heard his piece, "Catalina", on a Steve Tavglione album, and that made me grab John's solo debut, Cauldron (1992). I also dig this project, 3 Brave Souls , that he did with Darryl Jones and Leon Ndugu Chancler...

^They did that tune at the show.

Ron Bruner Jr. was on drums in place of Ndugu with Dwight Trible and Nayanna Holley on vocals.

Ron ripped on a tune (dedicated to Elvin Jones) that Beasley wrote for his Positoothly! album called Black Thunder.

Although Bruner is already a well-known entity with musicians, chances are around here folks will soon have a love/hate relationship with him...whistling

...Oska T & Ask Me Now

Monday night's gig at Typhoon in Santa Monica was unfortunately the band's last performance.
Dave Grusin and Lee Ritenour showed up to check out the set.
