Same here. I saw him live around that time in Paradiso. He was good, but seemed a bit unsure of himself. I know he kept making records after that, but never really kept up. That's the downside of releasing records on your own: no one outside the small circle of diehard fans will notice.

I wore out "wildcard" .

had to buy another cd .

I never got into the "downloading " of songs etc - and i did buy a download of an album of his since - however I didnt really get into it (mainly because i put it on an mp3 player and i never listen to it basically via that mp3 mechanism...

then the computer fried and i never listened to it again . lol .

Colonel Angus may be smelly. colonel angus may be a little rough . but deep down ... Colonel angus is very sweet.

I love TTD.

Not sure if I have his most recent work, but I love the music I have. His voice is incredible.

It really is regrettable that he did not become a much bigger star. Sure, his first album was a big hit but after that he largely disappeared, at least as far as the general public is concerned. He had the talent and was one of the very best singers of his generation but he just couldn't connect with the public after Introducing the Hardline According to...

I would like to try some of his newer material but I don't pay for downloads and the physical releases are a bit too expensive.

Wasn't "What Shall I Do" actually from the Symphony or Damn period? I think it was a B-side for some single originally and for some reason he just chose to put it on the later editions of Wildcard as well. I might be wrong, I don't quite remember anymore.

I agree with this 100%! i was obssessed with TTD after awhile. When i got Neither Fish Nor Flesh it was OVER! i listened to that album non stop for weeks and weeks and weeks lol

I think i probably drove my roommate at the time crazy cause i played that album so much... and when i read all the instruments TTD played on the album i laughed and said no way.

This mofo plays like 23 instruments on the album and sings like a boss!

Once i got Sympany Or Damn and Vibrator i was a fan for life.

To be honest, TTD doesn't seem to play most of the instruments he claims to be able to play too well. His drumming is pretty bad on the newer records and his guitar and keyboard playing during gigs is, uhm, here and there. lol

Truth be told, TTD's greatest instrument is his voice. Everything else is secondary.

Oh, yeah. He performs "Vibrator" particularly well. Some of those riffs are really nice. But in many cases the parts he plays are very basic and he seems to make a lot of mistakes live too.

He had a few great bands back in the day, but when he went "indie" and moved to Italy it's all gone downhill. His voice is still great, but the performances have been quite amateurish.

^Which of course doesn't help in making a comeback.
Let's say that Introducing the Hardline was his Purple Rain and right after that Fish Nor Flesh was his Around the World in a Day. But I guess he was overreaching himself with that one and neither he nor the audience was ready for an "artistic" record like that. He very badly wants to be more than a soul singer and it's very possible that it was Prince who influenced him to play all the instruments (to show off?) but like Musicslave said, his best instrument is his voice. And his soul songs are the best. Holding On to You is the best track on Vibrator.

well I have said this before - I think TTD - his albums - from Hardline ... to NEITHER FISH NOR FLESH ... to

SYMPHANY or DAMN , to VIBRATOR and up to WILDCARD was better than Prince albums .... (since probably Lovesexy for me ).

His second album kinda lost me a lil ... but now listening to it ... i do like it .

I did get to see him in concert in NYC in 2002 or so ... best concert i think i have ever seen ... baring maybe a Prince gig ...

I'm thinking of the bit in the BBC Omnibus documentary where Terence talks about Prince being the one who taught him not to care about what record companies think (or something along those lines). Maybe that was a lesson that he learned a little too well?

I just feel that the image they tried to present of him as a Prince-type of a powerhouse in the studio was false. He seemed to rely on others for the most part for what's heard on those 4-5 records (along with the production). It seems he believed in all that hype himself and then he couldn't live up to it when it was time to prove he could make it on his own.

He was one of my idols when growing up, but I just don't think he has what it takes to be an independent artist. There are thousands of unsigned "one man bands" that make better recordings out there. It's not the "lofi" aspect that bothers me, just the overall clumsiness of the performances and how badly it's all recorded (granted, I haven't heard the latest ones).

While his Sananada (Don't care if I spelt that right) material is pretty meh, I LOVE his first four albums. A very unique and amazing vocalist and a great instrumentalist.

D'Arby was always corny, in my humble o-pen-yee-on.

"Sign Your Name" was the shit, however.

I can't remember when was the last time I've seen a black musician in my own country that would have been able to play funk or soul type of music well. Most of the Africans in Europe are just immigrants that are either into their own traditional music or hiphop. UK & France might be exceptions.
