all of my threads have been haphazardly scrutinized and edited/removed.

I couldn't find the thread on it either so I made a new one. shrug

I love the "Apache" hook on "How Does The Grass Grow?" haha.

I am enjoying the sleeve/liner design and contents (full lyrics).

I bought the deluxe edition with three bonus tracks but I am stuck on about a dozen on the main album (eh, only day 2 I've had the album).

Not sure what happened to the other thread - very bizarre.

But the album is amazing - i'm still completely engrossed by it. It's such a DARK album. I really paid attention to most of the lyrics last night and was really struck by how much blood and death permeates this album. "Valentine's Day" in particular is really powerful and dark, and particularly relevant today. There's such an ambiguity about it. It's apparently about someone being told by a student that he's going on a school rampage - "it's happening today". So the question is, what does he do about it? Is it real or just vengeful boasting?

Then you've got the blood soaked fields of war and death in "How Does the Grass Grow". The mournful, elegiac "Where Are We Now".... it goes on and on.

Great album that fans will be talking about for a long time, just like all of his great works.

Really? I thought it was pretty clearly laid out in the lyrics, but I could be way off. What was your interpretation? That's the great thing about Bowie songs. People are still debating the meaing of songs that are 30+ years old cool

Valentine told me who's to go
Feelings he's treasured most of all
The teachers and the football star
It's in his tiny face
It's in his scrawny hand
Valentine told me so
He's got something to say
It's Valentine's Day

The rhythm of the crowd
Teddy and Judy down
Valentine sees it all
He's got something to say
It's Valentine's Day

Valentine told me how he'd feel
If all the world were under his heel
Or stumbling through the mall
It's in his tiny face
It's in his scrawny hand
Valentine knows it all
He's got something to say
It's Valentine's Day

Valentine Valentine
Valentine Valentine

It's in his scrawny hand
It's in his icy heart
It's happening today
Valentine Valentine

Definitely about school massacre.

"The rhythm of the crowd

I read this as panic spreading, Teddy and Judy are shot down, the murderer sees everyone although they're trying to hide and finally everyone is "listening" to him. Also, I guess it doesn't have anything to do with Valentine's Day - but the name of the murderer might be Valentine. What do you think?

That's exactly how I took it - the murderer is named Valentine. It's a really chilling song.

I don't think it's happened yet, though. "It's happening today". I think Valentine is fantasizing it, picturing it all in his head how it will be. "Valentine sees it all". And he's telling someone else about it, putting someone in the situation of deciding what to do... and it's left ambiguous at the end.

Yeah... nice. You're dead on, I think (no pun intended). LOVE the song. The guitar and bass create such a great, deep groove.

This is another classic. And again, really really dark. Definitely open to interpretation, but it seems either really bitter towards someone in particular, or could it be directed internally? I don't take anything Bowie does as autobiographical or as him personally as the narrator. He's adopted so many characters over the years... sometimes over the course of the album, sometimes just for one song. It's a brilliant recording though. And the ending... that faint echo of the "Five Years" intro... it's just fantastic. I can't wrap my head around how much I'm loving this album heh

No-one ever saw you
Moving through the dark
Leaving slips of paper
Somewhere in the park
Hidden from your friends
Stealing all they knew
Love is thrown in airless rooms
Then vile rewards for you

But I'm gonna tell
Yes I've gotta tell
Gotta tell the things you've said
When you're talking in the dark
And I'm gonna tell the things you've done
When you're walking through the park

Some night on the thriller’s street
Will come the silent gun
You've got a dangerous heart
You stole their trust, their moon, their sun
There'll come assassin’s needle
On a crowded train
I bet you'll feel so lonely
You could die

Buildings crammed with people
Landscape filled with wrath
Grey concrete city
Rain has wet the street
I want to see you clearly
Before you close the door
A room of bloody history
You made sure of that

I can see you as a corpse
Hanging from a beam
I can read you like a book
I can feel you falling
I hear you moaning in your room
Oh see if I care
Oh please, please make it soon

Walls have got you cornered
You've got the blues my friend
And people don't like you
But you will leave without a sound, without an end

Oblivion shall own you
Death alone shall love you
I hope you feel so lonely
You could die
You feel so lonely
You could die
You feel so lonely
You could die

Apparently, Tony Visconti asked Bowie what 'Heat' is about and he said that it's not him or autobiographical, he's just an observer. I read a review and the writer commented that, even though it mght not be autobiographical, what Bowie sings about says a lot about him. I suppose that it true.

it's up on youtube apparently but i haven't listened to it yet. Will track it down eventually, want to find a high quality audio version. Maybe it will appear as a b-side on a future single.

The 3 bonus tracks are interesting and good but I can see why they are bonus tracks and not on the album proper.

I was going to buy the Japanese version but the price was too high for one extra song... lol Just got the deluxe CD which I am listening to now for the first time... So far, I am pleased with it... "The Next Day"--a great opening song, as well as "Dirty Boys" on the heels of it (strongly reminds me of Jim Morrison here at the beginning...).
